Chapter 2 - RACHEL HALE DIED TWICEThe branch did not remain locked long.

Martin called bank security.

Then legal.

Then Chicago police because a minor had been physically handled inside the branch and suspicious identity records had surfaced.

Customers were allowed to leave after contact details were taken.

Ethan stayed.

Not because he was detained.

Because he chose to.

He sat in a private conference room drinking hot chocolate he barely touched.

A child-services advocate named Mia Torres arrived within forty minutes.

So did Detective Lena Brooks.

No one questioned Ethan alone.

Good.

Then Martin brought in the old account file.

Rachel Hale.

Born 1981.

Recorded deceased:

March 17, 2015.

Ethan did the math.

He was one.

“That’s wrong.”

Martin nodded.

“It appears to be.”

Ethan pulled the real death certificate from his backpack.

Rachel Marie Hale.

Died three months earlier.

Same date of birth.

Same Social Security number.

Same woman.

Two death dates.

Eleven years apart.

Detective Brooks asked:

“Who told you your mother died this year?”

Ethan stared.

“I was there.”

Silence.

Cancer.

Pancreatic.

She had spent four months in treatment.

Then hospice.

No mystery.

No fake death from Ethan’s perspective.

She died in a rented apartment on the North Side with Ethan holding her hand.

Mia asked gently:

“Who arranged the funeral?”

“Mom’s friend, Mrs. Perez.”

“Any relatives?”

Ethan shook his head.

“Mom said we didn’t have family.”

That statement later became very important.

Because the trust file listed one.

A grandfather.

Jonathan Vale.

Founder of Vale Consolidated Transport.

Deceased seven years earlier.

Another name appeared beneath his.

Arthur Vale.

Trust protector.

Still alive.

Martin looked at the detective.

“I know that name.”

Everyone did.

Arthur Vale was a billionaire industrialist.

Chairman of Vale Consolidated.

One of the wealthiest men in Illinois.

And apparently Ethan’s great-uncle.

Except Ethan had never heard of him.
