Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO ARRIVED IN A BLACK SEDANArthur Vale arrived at the bank just after six.

No dramatic motorcade.
One black sedan.
One attorney.
One security man.
Arthur was seventy-one.
Tall.
Silver hair.
Immaculate coat.
He entered the conference room and looked at Ethan.
Then stopped.
For several seconds, he looked devastated.
“Rachel’s boy.”
Ethan stared.
“You know me?”
Arthur nodded.
“I knew you existed.”
“Did you know Mom was alive?”
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Detective Brooks stepped in.
“Mr. Vale, you should speak through counsel.”
Arthur ignored her for one second longer.
Then said:
“Yes.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“For how long?”
“Seven years.”
Everyone froze.
Not eleven.
Seven.
Meaning Arthur may not have created the original false death.
But he learned later and chose not to correct it.
Why?
Corporate control.
He admitted that much.
Rachel contacted him seven years earlier when Jonathan Vale died.
She wanted to correct Ethan’s records.
Arthur begged her not to.
Vale Consolidated was in the middle of a hostile restructuring.
If Rachel’s legal survival emerged, old voting agreements could reopen.
Lenders might question governance.
Family factions could sue.
Rachel demanded protections for Ethan.
Arthur promised the trust would remain untouched.
It did.
Then she disappeared again.
Arthur called it:
“An arrangement.”
May you like
Detective Brooks called it something else.
“Concealment.”
