Then asked:

“Did you know we were poor?”

Arthur stopped.

That was the question no balance sheet could answer.

“I knew Rachel refused distributions.”

“Did you ask why?”

“No.”

“Did you know I wore shoes with tape?”

Arthur looked down.

“No.”

“Did you know Mom skipped meals?”

Silence.

“No.”

Ethan nodded.

“So you protected the money.”

Arthur whispered:

“Yes.”

“But not us.”

That sentence broke him.
