Chapter 14: The Last Lie

The lights in the basement flickered.

Iris's eyes dimmed.

"System shutdown in progress.""

Marcus grabbed the diagnostic cable.

"Can we stop it?""

Iris answered in a weakened voice.

"Remote administrator attempting to erase archived records.""

I looked at the screen.

"Where is the signal coming from?""

"Unknown.""

Detective Morgan took out her radio.

"Secure the building. Nobody leaves.""

An officer rushed toward the server room.

I knelt beside Iris.

"Can you disconnect from the network?""

"Affirmative. However, the external command has already reached the legacy processor.""

I remembered the phrase.

The same legacy connection Ethan had used during the competition.

"Use local recovery.""

Iris paused.

"Please provide the recovery phrase.""

I leaned closer.

"NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO ASK TWICE TO BE HEARD.""

The machine's eyes brightened.

"Local recovery accepted.""

The screen went dark for one second.

Then the video returned.

My mother's face appeared again.

Vanessa stood across from her.

She looked younger, but her expression was exactly the same.

Cold.

Impatient.

My mother's voice was clear.

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"I understand perfectly. You built something valuable, Catherine. Something that could change the entire care industry.""

"It was built to protect people.""

"People are predictable. Their behavior can be measured. Their choices can be influenced.""

"That's precisely why the safeguards matter.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Your little ethical principles are going to make us all poor.""

My mother shook her head.

"Then I would rather be poor.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're going to regret this.""

The recording ended.

Detective Morgan turned to Marcus.

"Can you identify the location?""

Marcus examined the background.

"That's the old Companion Research facility.""

"Is it still operational?""

"No. It was closed years ago.""

Olivia looked up.

"There's a second entrance. Through the service corridor.""

Morgan immediately contacted her team.

"We need a warrant and a search unit there.""

I looked at the video.

"There's more.""

Iris displayed a second recording.

It showed a dark hallway.

A person entered the room carrying a small case.

Ethan.

He placed the case on the table.

Then another person entered.

My father.

I turned slowly.

Dad was standing behind us.

His face had lost all color.

"Why were you there?""

He stared at the screen.

"I went to get your mother.""

"After the accident?""

He nodded.

"Vanessa called me. She said Catherine was alive and that I needed to come immediately.""

"Did you see her?""

"Yes.""

My voice broke.

"Was she alive?""

Dad nodded.

"She was.""

The room became painfully silent.

"What happened?""

He looked at me.

"Ethan had already moved her. He said they were taking her to a private medical facility.""

"Which one?""

"I don't know. I never saw her again.""

I stepped backward.

"You told me she died.""

"Vanessa told me she was dead. She showed me a report. I believed her.""

"But you saw her alive.""

He began crying.

"I know.""

I felt something inside me collapse.

My father had not simply failed to protect my mother.

He had stood close enough to save her and walked away.

"Why didn't you search for her?""

"I did. For months. Vanessa threatened to tell the police I had helped steal the research. She said she'd make sure I lost custody of you.""

"You could have told me.""

"You were nine.""

"I was her daughter!""

My voice echoed through the basement.

Dad lowered his head.

I couldn't look at him anymore.

Detective Morgan approached.

"Daniel, we need a full statement. Now.""

He nodded.

"I'll tell you everything.""

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

"We'll find out what happened.""

Iris spoke again.

"Additional recording located.""

The screen displayed an audio file.

*CATHERINE CARTER — FINAL MESSAGE.*

I pressed play.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"Maya, if this recording reaches you, I need you to know that I never stopped trying to come home.""

I covered my mouth.

"I don't know how much time I have. Vanessa and Ethan have taken the research. They believe they can control the Guardian system, but they don't understand its central purpose.""

She paused.

"Technology can predict behavior. It cannot decide what a person deserves.""

There was a faint sound in the background.

A door opening.

My mother's voice became urgent.

"If you ever find Iris, trust her safeguards. They were built from the same principles I taught you when you were little.""

Then she whispered:

"And don't blame yourself for what happened to me.""

The recording ended.

I couldn't stop crying.

Olivia reached for my hand.

"She wanted you to know.""

I nodded.

Detective Morgan received a radio message.

Her expression changed.

"We have a location.""

"Where?"" Marcus asked.

"The old Companion facility. A maintenance room was converted into an unregistered medical storage area. We're sending officers now.""

Iris spoke.

"That location matches a historical medical transport record.""

Morgan turned.

"What record?""

"Patient transfer authorization. Name: Catherine Carter.""

My breath caught.

"Is she alive?""

"Current status unavailable.""

Morgan took out her phone.

"We need to move.""

Within minutes, we were on our way.

The old facility stood behind a row of abandoned industrial buildings. Its windows were dark, and weeds had grown through cracks in the concrete.

Police vehicles surrounded the entrance.

Morgan ordered everyone to remain behind the officers.

Marcus held Olivia close.

Dad stood beside me, silent.

The service corridor smelled of dust and chemicals.

At the end was a steel door.

An officer opened it.

Inside were several old medical beds, storage cabinets, and a computer terminal.

On the wall was a faded sign:

*COMPANION RESEARCH — PRIVATE CLINICAL UNIT.*

A second door stood at the far end.

It was locked.

Morgan signaled the officers.

They forced it open.

The room beyond was small.

A desk.

A chair.

A medical cabinet.

And a framed photograph.

My mother.

I approached it slowly.

Someone had written beneath the photograph:

*PATIENT TRANSFERRED — RECORD SEALED.*

Marcus opened the cabinet.

Inside were old medical files.

One had my mother's name.

I pulled it out.

The first page showed the date of the accident.

The second showed her injuries.

The third showed something I never expected.

*PATIENT SURVIVED INITIAL TRAUMA.*

I stared.

"She survived.""

Dad leaned against the wall.

"Oh, God.""

Morgan took the file.

"Where was she transferred?""

The next page had been removed.

Only a torn edge remained.

Iris's voice came through the portable speaker.

"Additional digital record found.""

A file appeared.

It contained a transfer authorization.

The destination was a private rehabilitation center outside the city.

The patient name had been altered.

But the original medical identifier remained.

Marcus read it.

"That's not possible.""

"What?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"That center was closed four years ago.""

"Can we find the records?""

Morgan shook her head.

"Not without another search warrant.""

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her hair was disheveled, and her coat was open.

She looked at the archive box in my hands.

"Give it to me.""

Detective Morgan stepped forward.

"Vanessa Miller, you're under arrest.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You think a few old recordings can prove anything?""

I held up the file.

"It proves my mother survived the accident.""

Her expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Then she looked at my father.

"You told her?""

Dad stepped forward.

"Yes.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You ungrateful coward. I protected you.""

"You protected yourself," he said.

She looked back at me.

"Your mother was going to destroy everything. The company. The research. The future.""

"You stole her work.""

"I built the company that could make it successful.""

"You stole my robot, too.""

"Because you were wasting its potential.""

I stepped closer.

"My robot was designed to help people. Yours was designed to control them.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"You're just like her.""

I held her gaze.

"Thank you.""

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa lunged toward the archive.

The officers grabbed her immediately.

She struggled.

"Let go of me! You don't understand what you've done!""

Morgan secured her wrists.

"We understand enough.""

As they led Vanessa away, she turned toward me.

"You'll never find Catherine.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Why?""

She smiled.

"Because she's not where you think she is.""

Then she was gone.

I looked down at the medical file.

One line remained visible beneath the torn page.

*TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY: E. COLE.*

And beside it was a destination code.

Iris processed it.

"Location identified.""

Marcus leaned closer.

"Where?""

Iris answered.

"Willow Creek Rehabilitation Center.""

Olivia shook her head.

"That's where I was treated after the accident.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She nodded slowly.

"I remember a woman in the room next to mine. I used to hear her singing at night.""

My fingers tightened around the file.

"What did she sound like?""

Olivia looked at me.

"She sang the same song you told me your mother used to sing.""

I couldn't speak.

May you like

Because suddenly, the impossible didn't feel impossible anymore.

My mother might still be alive.
