Chapter 8: The Girl Who Disappeared

Marcus called the police again.

This time, he told them about the photograph, the messages, and the possible connection between Olivia's disappearance and Vantage Living Solutions.

While he spoke, I sat beside Iris, watching the countdown.

*00:58:31.*

The robot's blue display flickered.

"Primary creator," she said, "remote access request remains pending.""

I touched the side of her head.

"Stay with me, Iris.""

"Always.""

I swallowed.

It was a simple programmed response.

But at that moment, it felt like a promise.

Dr. Hayes approached with a technician.

"We've secured the competition network. The device is isolated from the auditorium's wireless system.""

"Will that stop the override?"" I asked.

"Not necessarily. The request appears to be coming through the legacy hardware connection.""

Marcus ended his call.

"Olivia designed that connection. She used a secondary authentication key stored on a physical device.""

"Where is it?""

He looked at me.

"I don't know.""

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Reed? This is Detective Morgan. We've reviewed the information you provided.""

Marcus straightened.

"Have you found my daughter?""

"Not yet. But we located her vehicle near a private research facility outside the city.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Was she alone?""

"We're still investigating. However, the facility is registered to a company associated with Ethan Cole.""

I looked at Marcus.

He put the call on speaker.

"Can you send officers there?""

"We already have a team approaching. But there's something else. The building's security system appears to have been remotely disabled.""

My heart began pounding.

"Can you see inside?"" I asked.

There was a pause.

"Who is that?""

"Maya Carter. I built the robot connected to this investigation.""

Detective Morgan's voice became more serious.

"Miss Carter, we found a technical device in the vehicle. It contains a label with your name.""

My stomach dropped.

"What device?""

"A small black processor. The serial number matches the hardware in your robot.""

Marcus looked at me.

"That's the missing authentication key.""

The detective continued.

"We're sending photographs now.""

A few seconds later, Marcus's phone received an image.

It showed a small metal device wrapped in a piece of blue fabric.

I recognized the fabric.

It was from my original workshop apron.

I had used that apron when I was fourteen.

The one Vanessa had thrown away.

"How did that get there?"" I whispered.

Marcus zoomed in on the device.

"Olivia must have found it.""

I shook my head.

"No. That was mine.""

The memory returned in fragments.

The first processor.

The grant.

The sealed package.

And the small blue envelope containing the component.

I had once removed the processor from its casing because I thought the manufacturer had included an unnecessary secondary chip.

I had kept the chip in my workshop apron for months.

Then the apron disappeared.

Vanessa had told me she donated it.

I looked at the photograph again.

"She had it all along.""

Marcus turned toward me.

"Who?""

"Vanessa. She took my apron. She must have found the chip.""

A cold silence settled over the table.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A girl's voice whispered.

"Maya?""

I stood.

"Olivia?""

"Yes.""

Marcus rushed toward me.

"Olivia! Where are you?""

Her voice trembled.

"Dad?""

Marcus nearly dropped his phone.

"Sweetheart, are you safe?""

"I think so.""

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you. They're watching the building.""

I put the call on speaker.

"Olivia, listen to me. We received your messages. We know about Aurora-X.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Ethan knows about the original safeguards. He's trying to remove them.""

"Why?""

"Because the company has already sold the predictive system to a private security contractor.""

Marcus looked stunned.

"What?""

Olivia continued.

"They don't want elderly-care technology anymore. They want the behavior prediction software. The same system can be used to identify people who are vulnerable, frightened, or easy to pressure.""

I felt sick.

"Who bought it?""

"I don't know the final buyer. Ethan kept the contract files separate.""

"Can you get them?""

"I tried.""

Her voice cracked.

"That's why I'm here.""

Marcus moved closer.

"Olivia, you need to leave. The police are looking for you.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because Ethan has the only complete copy of the original project files.""

I stared at Iris.

"What happens if he gets into her system?""

Olivia answered immediately.

"He'll overwrite the safety architecture. Then he'll use the combined model to prove that the system belongs to Vantage.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Can we stop him?""

"Yes," Olivia whispered.

"But we need the physical authentication key.""

I glanced at the photograph.

"The police found it.""

Olivia went silent.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Don't give it to them.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

"Because it's not a key.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What do you mean?""

"It's a recording device.""

I stared at the photograph.

The small metal component had a tiny circular opening near one edge.

I had never noticed it before.

Olivia continued.

"My father designed the original chip to record diagnostic activity during early research. But Ethan modified it. It contains a complete record of every remote access attempt.""

Marcus looked horrified.

"That chip was never supposed to leave the laboratory.""

"Someone took it before the grant package was sent.""

I looked at my father.

He was standing near the doorway.

His face had become pale.

"Daniel?"" I said.

He approached slowly.

"I know who took it.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"Who?""

Dad swallowed.

"Vanessa.""

The room went quiet.

I stared at him.

"How do you know?""

Dad looked at me.

"Because I saw her open the package when it arrived. She told me the extra component was useless and removed it.""

My throat tightened.

"You watched her take it?""

"I didn't know what it was.""

"You didn't ask?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I thought she was helping you.""

I stepped away from him.

There was always an explanation.

Always a reason he hadn't noticed.

Always something he hadn't understood.

And somehow, I was always the one left paying for it.

Olivia interrupted.

"Maya, listen. The chip contains the original transfer logs. It can prove when Ethan accessed the system and who gave him permission.""

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

"Then we need to recover it.""

Before anyone could respond, a loud metallic bang came through Olivia's phone.

She gasped.

"What was that?"" Marcus shouted.

"I don't know.""

Another bang.

Then a man's voice.

"Olivia!""

Her breathing became rapid.

"Ethan.""

Marcus moved toward the door.

"Get away from him!""

"I can't. He's outside.""

"Find somewhere safe!""

Olivia whispered.

"Maya, there's something you need to know about your robot.""

"What?""

"The emergency-response system isn't just protecting its users.""

I stared at Iris.

"What else does it do?""

Olivia's voice dropped.

"It was designed to recognize when someone is being coerced.""

My stomach tightened.

"Coerced?""

"Yes. Your system can identify patterns of forced consent. If someone tries to make a user agree to something against their will, Iris can flag the interaction.""

I remembered the feature.

I had called it the Guardian Protocol.

It was one of my proudest innovations.

I had designed it after watching an elderly test participant repeatedly agree to things she didn't understand because she was afraid of upsetting her caregiver.

Olivia continued.

"That's why Ethan needs your system. Aurora-X can predict behavior, but it can't distinguish genuine consent from manipulation.""

The banging grew louder.

"Maya," Olivia whispered, "if you combine Iris with Aurora-X, you could expose every person who authorized the illegal data collection.""

"How?""

"The original chip contains a hidden archive.""

A door slammed.

Olivia screamed.

The call disconnected.

Marcus shouted her name.

I grabbed his arm.

"Call the police!""

He was already dialing.

But before he could finish, Iris's screen flashed red.

*REMOTE OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.*

I felt my blood turn cold.

A second message appeared.

*PRIMARY CREATOR ACCESS REVOKED.*

Then Iris turned her head toward me.

Her voice was different.

Flat.

Mechanical.

"Hello, Maya Carter.""

I stepped backward.

"Iris?""

"Primary creator not recognized.""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"What did they do?""

I reached for the emergency shutdown.

But Iris spoke again.

"New administrator confirmed.""

A name appeared.

*ETHAN COLE.*

May you like

Then the robot said something that made my heart stop.

"Please prepare for behavioral assessment.""
