Chapter 3: My Father Had Signed Away My Future
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
My father held the transfer agreement as though the paper had suddenly become too heavy.
I read the signature again.
*Daniel Carter.*
My father's name.
His handwriting.
His actual signature.
"Dad," I whispered.
He closed his eyes.
"I can explain.""
I stepped backward.
"Please don't.""
"Maya, listen to me.""
"You signed away my invention?""
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
The answer came too quickly.
I stared at him.
"Then what did you think it was?""
He looked down at the document.
"Vanessa told me it was a standard family business agreement. She said Brielle had developed the project and needed my authorization because she was under eighteen.""
"Did you even look at it?""
He didn't answer.
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course you didn't.""
"Maya, I was trying to help the family.""
"Which family?""
His expression tightened.
"Don't do this.""
I pointed toward the agreement.
"You signed my work away to a company I didn't even know existed. You didn't ask me. You didn't tell me. You didn't even check whose name was on the original design.""
"I trusted Vanessa.""
"And what about trusting me?""
He looked as though I had slapped him.
For years, I had waited for him to ask that question.
For years, I had hoped he would notice that I was always the one apologizing, always the one giving things up, always the one expected to understand.
Now he was standing in front of me with a document that could destroy everything I had worked toward.
And he still wanted me to understand him.
Before he could respond, Vanessa appeared in the lobby.
Her heels clicked against the polished floor.
Brielle followed close behind.
"Daniel," Vanessa said sharply.
"We need to leave.""
Dad held up the agreement.
"Is this real?""
Vanessa glanced at it.
Then she sighed.
"You're making this more dramatic than it needs to be.""
"You transferred Maya's invention to your company?""
"Technically, Brielle's company.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Daniel, we have investors waiting. This is a serious business arrangement. I don't have time for an emotional family discussion.""
I stared at her.
"Investors?""
She looked at me.
"Yes. Investors. People who understand the value of what Brielle has created.""
"What she created?""
Vanessa gave me a cold smile.
"Maya, you're talented. Nobody is denying that. But talent doesn't mean you know how to build a business.""
"That's why you stole it?""
"Watch your language.""
"You stole my work, signed my name out of the future, and handed everything to Brielle.""
Brielle stepped forward.
"Stop acting like a victim!""
I turned toward her.
"Then tell me what you actually built.""
Her cheeks flushed.
"I helped with the concept.""
"What concept?""
"The senior-care thing!""
"That's not a concept. That's the purpose of the machine.""
"Mom explained it to me!""
I looked at Vanessa.
There it was.
The truth, slipping out in the middle of an argument.
Brielle hadn't even known what the robot was designed to do until Vanessa explained it.
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.
"That's enough.""
But Brielle was crying now.
"You said she couldn't prove anything!""
The lobby went silent.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"Brielle.""
"You said the original files were gone!""
I looked at my stepsister.
She stared at the floor.
My father slowly lowered the agreement.
"Vanessa," he said.
"What did you do?""
She released Brielle's arm.
"Don't you dare question me in front of everyone.""
"Did you tell Brielle the original files were gone?""
"Daniel, we are not discussing this here.""
"Answer me.""
Vanessa's voice turned sharp.
"I did what I had to do to secure our family's future!""
I shook my head.
"You mean your company's future.""
She turned toward me.
"Do you have any idea how much money we've invested in this?""
I frowned.
"What money?""
Vanessa hesitated.
That was when I noticed the small detail on the agreement.
The purchase price.
$1.8 million.
My mouth went dry.
"They're paying you 1.8 million dollars?""
Vanessa didn't respond.
Brielle looked up.
"Mom said we were going to be rich.""
I stared at her.
"We?""
Brielle wiped her face.
"She said the company would be ours.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"How much were you going to give me?""
Vanessa let out an irritated breath.
"This isn't about you receiving a paycheck.""
I blinked.
"What?""
"You were going to receive an opportunity. Brielle was going to be the public face of the company. She has the personality for it.""
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
"So you planned to use my invention, give Brielle the credit, and let me disappear?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Not everything is about recognition, Maya.""
I stared at her.
"Then why is Brielle standing on that stage?""
She had no answer.
A security officer approached the lobby.
"Mrs. Carter, Dr. Hayes has requested that you return to the auditorium. The ethics committee would like to speak with you.""
Vanessa looked toward him.
"On what grounds?""
"An ownership dispute involving competition materials and possible unauthorized use of intellectual property.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
The officer remained expressionless.
"Please come with me.""
She turned to my father.
"Daniel, tell them this is a family matter.""
Dad looked at the agreement.
Then he looked at me.
For once, he didn't immediately obey her.
"Vanessa," he said quietly, "you need to explain what you've done.""
Her face hardened.
"You'll regret choosing her side.""
Dad flinched.
I noticed.
And suddenly, I understood how Vanessa had controlled our household for so long.
She didn't need to shout every day.
She only needed to make everyone afraid of what would happen if they disagreed with her.
Inside the auditorium, the competition had been temporarily suspended.
Dr. Hayes invited me to sit beside her at the judges' table.
Brielle stood near the stage, staring at her shoes.
Vanessa refused to sit.
She remained standing with her arms folded, as though she were attending a business meeting rather than an investigation.
Dr. Hayes placed the commercial transfer agreement on the table.
"Mrs. Carter, did you authorize the transfer of the Iris Care Assistant's intellectual property?""
"I authorized a business agreement involving my daughter's project.""
"Which daughter?""
"Brielle.""
Dr. Hayes opened the original development files.
"These records identify Maya Carter as the original creator.""
"Records can be manipulated.""
"Can you demonstrate that?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Dr. Hayes turned to me.
"Miss Carter, is there anything else we should know about the memory card?""
I hesitated.
There was one folder I hadn't opened.
I had seen its name the previous night while checking my backup.
But I hadn't wanted to believe what it contained.
*AUDIO_ARCHIVE.*
"Iris records certain security events," I said carefully.
"Only when someone attempts to access protected administrator functions.""
Dr. Hayes nodded.
"Can we review those recordings?""
"Yes.""
I connected the robot to the secure laptop.
Iris's screen illuminated.
"Would you like to review the protected access archive?""
"Yes.""
The first recording appeared.
It showed Vanessa entering the garage at 11:43 p.m.
She was carrying a small black laptop.
She approached Iris, connected a cable to the maintenance port, and began typing.
Then her voice came through the speakers.
"Come on. Where is the ownership file?""
The recording continued.
Vanessa looked toward the garage door.
"Once we transfer the project, Maya won't have anything left to prove.""
Brielle's voice came from somewhere behind the camera.
"What if she finds out?""
Vanessa laughed.
"She won't. Your father has already signed everything. By the time she understands what's happening, the contract will be final.""
The auditorium was silent.
The recording continued.
Brielle stepped into view.
"Are you sure the robot won't recognize her at the competition?""
Vanessa unplugged the cable.
"That's why we're changing the primary profile. She won't be able to override you.""
I felt sick.
Vanessa hadn't simply stolen the robot.
She had tried to erase me from its system.
Dr. Hayes paused the recording.
"Mrs. Carter, would you like to explain?""
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Then she looked at me.
Her expression was no longer frightened.
It was furious.
"You little liar.""
She moved toward the table.
The security officer stepped between us.
"You've been recording me?"" Vanessa demanded.
I shook my head.
"Iris recorded an unauthorized access attempt.""
"You planned this!""
"No," I said.
"I planned to build a robot that could help people.""
Vanessa pointed at me.
"You're destroying this family over a machine!""
I stood.
"No. You destroyed this family when you decided I was worth less than Brielle.""
My voice shook.
But I didn't look away.
Dr. Hayes closed the laptop.
"The competition will suspend Brielle's submission pending a formal investigation. We will also preserve all available evidence and notify the relevant intellectual property authorities.""
Vanessa looked toward Brielle.
"Say something.""
Brielle didn't move.
"Tell them!"" Vanessa snapped.
"Tell them you designed it!""
Brielle's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Brielle looked at the judges.
"I didn't build it. Mom told me to say I did.""
The words hung in the auditorium.
Then she began crying.
"I only wanted to win. She said Maya would get over it. She said Dad had already signed the papers.""
I stared at her.
Part of me wanted to feel sorry for her.
But I remembered the laundry room door.
I remembered Brielle laughing as she carried Iris away.
I remembered her standing beneath the spotlight, accepting applause for nine months of my life.
And I couldn't forgive her just because she was finally afraid of the consequences.
Dr. Hayes turned to me.
"Miss Carter, the judges would like to offer you an opportunity to present the original project, provided you are comfortable doing so.""
I looked at Iris.
Her silver head turned toward me.
"Would you like to continue, Maya?"" she asked.
For the first time that evening, I smiled.
"Yes.""
I walked toward the stage.
The audience applauded, but I barely heard them.
I placed my hand on Iris's shoulder.
"Let's show them what we actually built.""
Her screen glowed.
"Ready when you are, creator.""
I began the presentation.
I explained how Iris could detect changes in movement, recognize distress in a user's voice, and contact emergency services when necessary.
I demonstrated the medication reminder system.
I showed how she could connect isolated seniors with family members through scheduled video calls.
And then I showed the feature I was most proud of.
A small elderly woman appeared on the demonstration screen.
Her name was Eleanor.
She had volunteered during one of my earliest testing sessions.
Iris greeted her.
"Good afternoon, Eleanor. Have you taken your medication?""
The woman smiled.
"Not yet, sweetheart.""
"Would you like me to remind you after lunch?""
"That would be lovely.""
The audience watched as Iris adjusted the reminder schedule.
I explained that the system was designed not to replace human companionship but to make sure people living alone weren't forgotten.
When I finished, the auditorium stood.
For the first time in my life, I received applause without someone else's name attached to my work.
Dr. Hayes approached the microphone.
"Miss Carter, the judges would like to inform you that your project has been selected for the competition's final technical review. Your original authorship will be protected while the investigation continues.""
I couldn't stop smiling.
Then I saw my father standing at the back of the auditorium.
He was holding something.
A second document.
He approached slowly.
"Maya?""
I turned.
"Not now, Dad.""
"I know. But you need to see this.""
He placed the document on the judges' table.
It was another agreement from Vantage Living Solutions.
This one was dated two weeks earlier.
My eyes moved down the page.
The first section described Iris.
The second described the proposed commercial product.
But the third section made my blood run cold.
It wasn't a transfer agreement.
It was a patent application.
And Vanessa had submitted it under her own name.
I looked up.
"She applied for a patent?""
Dad nodded.
"Yes.""
"Using my design?""
His face crumpled.
"There's something else.""
He pointed to the final page.
A list of named inventors appeared beneath the application.
Vanessa Carter.
Brielle Carter.
And one more name.
*Daniel Carter.*
My father had listed himself as a co-inventor.
I stared at him.
"You knew about this?""
"No," he whispered.
"I swear I didn't.""
Then he pointed to the filing date.
The application had been submitted six months before Iris was even completed.
My hands began to tremble.
That meant Vanessa hadn't simply decided to steal my finished invention.
She had been preparing to claim it long before the competition.
And when I looked closer at the attached technical description, I recognized something else.
The document contained a design I had never shown anyone.
A feature I had kept hidden in Iris's development files.
A feature that had never been demonstrated publicly.
I looked at my father.
"How did she get this?""
He swallowed.
Then he said something that made the entire room feel colder.
"Because, Maya, she didn't get it from your computer.""
He lowered his voice.
"She got it from the person who helped pay for your first prototype.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
Dad looked toward Vanessa.
May you like
And Vanessa, for the first time that night, smiled.
Because she knew exactly who he was about to name.
