Chapter 11: My Father's Last Will

I refused to go alone.
Officer Bennett agreed to arrange a controlled operation, but there was one condition.
I had to provide every document connected to the twins.
Daniel brought the original clinic file, the forged birth certificates, and my father's letter.
We spread everything across a conference table in the hospital's administrative office.
For the first time, I could examine the documents without someone screaming, disappearing, or threatening to take a baby.
Daniel pointed to the trust agreement.
“There's a provision here we haven't discussed.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
“Your father established a separate inheritance schedule. It was supposed to activate when the next generation reached a specific legal status.””
“Meaning?””
“An acknowledged child.””
I frowned.
“Why is that important?””
“Because the trust doesn't simply require a biological heir. It requires the heir to be formally acknowledged by you.””
I stared at the document.
“So Richard needs me to sign something?””
“Yes. He needs you to acknowledge a child as your legal successor.””
I looked at the two birth certificates.
“That's why he wanted me to register both twins.””
Daniel nodded.
“But there's a problem.””
“Of course there is.””
“The original will names a different person as the final executor.””
I read the name.
My father's handwriting appeared beside the printed text.
*Sophie Bennett.*
My sister.
I stared at Daniel.
“Sophie was named executor?””
“Yes.””
“Then why has Richard been controlling everything?””
“Because Sophie was presumed dead.””
I leaned back.
My father had built an elaborate arrangement involving children, inheritance, and a secret that had been buried for seven years.
But the person he had trusted most was the sister he had allowed everyone to believe was dead.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why did Sophie contact you three weeks ago?””
“She wanted to recover the original will.””
“Did she find it?””
Daniel opened another folder.
He removed a small envelope.
“She gave me this before she disappeared.””
Inside was a handwritten note.
Marcus,
Dad didn't leave the estate to Richard. He left it to the children. But there is one condition.
The children must be raised together.
Not separated. Not sold. Not used to settle debts.
If Richard takes control, he will separate them permanently.
I read the note twice.
“Why would my father write something like this?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he knew what Richard was planning.””
I stared at the photograph of Lily.
Then at the birth certificates.
Oliver.
Olivia.
Lily.
Three children.
Three pieces of a family secret.
And Sophie was somewhere out there protecting one of them.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice whispered.
“Marcus?””
“Sophie!””
“Don't shout. I don't have much time.””
“Where are you?””
“Near the old estate.””
“Are you safe?””
She hesitated.
“Not really.””
I closed my eyes.
“Oliver?””
“He's with me.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“Can I speak to him?””
“He's sleeping.””
“Bring him to the police.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian has someone watching the hospital.””
I looked toward Officer Bennett.
He immediately signaled for the phone to be placed on speaker.
Sophie continued.
“Marcus, you need to listen. Adrian knows about the will. He knows Dad named me executor.””
“Why is he doing this?””
“Because he's not trying to inherit the money.””
I frowned.
“Then what does he want?””
“The children.””
I looked at Daniel.
Sophie lowered her voice.
“He believes the trust contains something else. Something your father hid before he died.””
“What?””
“The original ownership records for the company.””
I froze.
My father had built Bennett Holdings from a small construction business into a multinational property group.
When he died, Richard took over as acting trustee and managed the company's financial records.
If the original ownership documents existed, they could change everything.
Sophie continued.
“Dad discovered that Richard had been transferring company assets through private accounts. He created a separate trust to protect the children's future.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
“Where is the original document?”” I asked.
Sophie whispered, “Inside the old house.””
Then I heard a car door slam.
“Marcus, I have to go.””
“Wait!””
“One more thing. The person who helped Adrian take Oliver wasn't Eleanor.””
I looked toward my wife.
She had been sitting silently beside Lily.
“Who was it?””
Sophie took a shaky breath.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
My lawyer was standing directly in front of me.
His face had gone completely white.
The call disconnected.
I stared at him.
“Is that true?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Officer Bennett moved closer.
“Mr. Cole, I need you to put your hands where I can see them.””
Daniel slowly raised his hands.
“Marcus, let me explain.””
I stood.
“You helped take my son?””
“I was following instructions.””
“Whose?””
“Your father's.””
My chest tightened.
“My father has been dead for four years!””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Your father left instructions that were supposed to remain confidential until the children were born.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed Richard would try to take them.””
I shook my head.
“Then why did you help him?””
“I didn't know Adrian was involved until tonight.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Daniel looked toward the hospital room.
“Marcus, I helped arrange Oliver's transfer because I believed it would keep him away from Richard.””
“Where is he?””
“Sophie has him.””
“Then why did you let me believe he had been kidnapped?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“Because Adrian was listening.””
I felt sick.
“You could have told me the truth.””
“No. I couldn't.””
Officer Bennett moved closer.
“Mr. Cole, you're coming with us.””
Daniel didn't resist.
As the officers escorted him away, he turned back.
“Marcus!””
I looked at him.
“Your father left one final instruction. It's inside the safe at the old estate.””
“What instruction?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Don't trust the child who carries his name.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
But he was already being led down the corridor.
I returned to the hospital room.
Eleanor was holding Lily.
My mother was beside the window.
I told them everything.
When I mentioned Daniel's final words, my mother immediately covered her mouth.
Then she whispered:
“Your father was talking about Adrian.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because Adrian wasn't just your father's business partner's assistant.””
I waited.
My mother took Lily's hand.
“He was your father's first son.””
The room went silent.
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“What?””
“Your father had a child before he married me. He kept Adrian's existence secret because his mother threatened to expose him.””
I looked toward Eleanor.
She was shaking.
“That's impossible,” she whispered.
My mother nodded.
“Adrian is your half-brother.””
I stared at the wall.
The man who had stolen my newborn son.
The man who had manipulated my wife.
The man who had threatened my sister.
Was my father's firstborn child.
And he had been waiting all these years to claim what he believed belonged to him.
My phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared.
Oliver was sleeping in a small wooden crib.
Beside him stood Sophie.
And behind her, partially visible in the reflection of a mirror, was a man holding a gun.
The message read:
*MIDNIGHT. THE OLD ESTATE. BRING THE ORIGINAL WILL.*
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*OR YOUR SISTER AND YOUR SON DISAPPEAR LIKE YOUR MOTHER DID.*
