Chapter 6: The Dead Man's Instructions

I stared at my phone.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Sophie was alive.
She had Oliver.
And someone connected to my father's past was standing beside her.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who was that man?””
Daniel's expression told me he already knew.
“His name is Richard Hayes.””
My father's former business partner.
The man who had delivered the eulogy at his funeral.
The man who had hugged me afterward and told me my father would have been proud.
“What does Richard have to do with Sophie?””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
“I think you should see something.””
He removed a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front in my father's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
The letters were slightly slanted. The M was always unusually large.
I hadn't seen that handwriting in four years.
“Where did you get this?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Richard gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Two days ago.””
I stared at him.
“You've had a letter from my dead father for two days, and you didn't tell me?””
“It's not that simple.””
“Nothing in this house is simple anymore!””
Officer Harris gently touched my shoulder.
“Mr. Bennett, please keep your voice down. You're holding a newborn.””
I looked at Olivia.
Her eyes were closed.
I forced myself to breathe.
Then I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed my father standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was a much younger Sophie.
She was holding a baby.
A little boy.
I looked at the date.
Seven years earlier.
The same year Sophie supposedly died.
I unfolded the letter.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I made mistakes. Terrible mistakes. I believed I was protecting this family when I was actually destroying it.
Your sister came to me seven years ago carrying a child. Adrian was the father. I offered her money to leave the country because I believed Adrian would never stop threatening her.
When she refused, Richard arranged a disappearance.
I stopped reading.
A disappearance.
Not a death.
I continued.
I was told Sophie would be safe. I was told the police would find an abandoned vehicle and assume the worst. I never authorized anyone to hurt her.
My hands began shaking.
But I discovered later that the plan involved more than a disappearance. Someone wanted Sophie erased from the family records entirely.
I suspect Richard.
I looked up.
Daniel was watching me.
“Your father wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“Why did Richard give it to you?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because he wanted me to destroy it.””
I stared at him.
“And you kept it?””
“I thought you deserved to know.””
I continued reading.
The final paragraph was shorter.
There is one more thing you must understand. Sophie did not return because of the children. She returned because she found the original trust agreement. The document I signed before my death.
It names the rightful heir.
I looked at the bottom.
My father had signed it.
But beneath his signature was another name.
*Richard Hayes.*
I slowly lowered the letter.
“Why is Richard named in my father's trust?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Because your father changed the terms shortly before he died.””
“Changed them how?””
“Richard was appointed as temporary trustee.””
“Temporary?””
Daniel nodded.
“Until you became the legal father of a child.””
I looked at Olivia.
The room suddenly felt colder.
“And then?””
“Control of the trust would transfer to you.””
I stared at him.
“So Eleanor needed the babies registered under my name.””
“Yes.””
“And Richard needed me to become their legal father.””
Daniel nodded.
I looked at the birth certificates.
Two newborns.
One inheritance.
A family built on forged documents.
But something still didn't make sense.
“Why would Richard want the babies?””
Daniel closed the briefcase.
“Because he stands to lose control of nearly four million dollars.””
I looked toward Eleanor.
She was sitting motionless on the bed.
“Did you know about the trust?””
She nodded.
“How long?””
“Since before we got married.””
The answer nearly knocked the breath out of me.
“You married me because of my father's money?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Eleanor looked at me.
“I loved you.””
I laughed without humor.
“That's a strange way to show it.””
“I didn't know what Richard was planning at first. He approached me after your father died. He said the trust would disappear unless you had a child.””
“And you believed him?””
“He showed me the documents.””
“So you arranged the pregnancy.””
“I wanted a baby, Marcus!””
“You arranged everything behind my back!””
She started crying.
“I thought if we had children, you would finally have the family you wanted.””
I looked at her.
“You didn't want to give me a family. You wanted to control the family I inherited.””
She said nothing.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“It's Richard.””
I held out my hand.
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel answered.
“Richard?””
A calm male voice filled the room.
“Daniel. I assume Marcus has received the letter.””
I stepped closer.
“Richard, where is my sister?””
A pause.
Then he laughed softly.
“Your sister is making a terrible mistake.””
“Where is she?””
“She's with Oliver.””
“Tell me where.””
“Not until we finish our conversation.””
I looked at Olivia.
“What do you want?””
“Just what your father promised me.””
“The trust?””
“The trust, Marcus. Your father and I built that fortune together. He made certain promises.””
“And now you're using two newborn babies to get it?””
Richard sighed.
“You're making this emotional.””
I gripped the phone.
“Someone took my son.””
“I know.””
“Did you order it?””
“I arranged for the children to be protected.””
“Protected from whom?””
“From people who don't understand the arrangement.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She was shaking her head.
Then Richard said something unexpected.
“Ask your wife why she selected those particular embryos.””
I turned toward Eleanor.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“She knows exactly why one of those babies is yours and the other isn't.””
Eleanor began crying harder.
I stepped toward her.
“What did you do?””
Richard's voice became quieter.
“Your wife made a mistake, Marcus. She believed she could create a perfect family by combining your father's money with your sister's children.””
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
“Very well.””
There was a brief pause.
Then he delivered the revelation.
“Neither baby was conceived through the arrangement you think took place. The clinic used an embryo created years ago, before your father died. An embryo carrying genetic material from someone your family has spent years trying to protect.””
I stared at the phone.
“What someone?””
Richard ignored me.
“Check the original clinic file. The name is on the first page.””
The call ended.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Do we have the original file?””
He slowly nodded.
He reached into his briefcase and removed a thin folder.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first page contained the embryo donor information.
The second listed the genetic contributors.
And the third contained a name that made me forget how to breathe.
*DONOR: SOPHIE BENNETT.*
But beneath it, in the section marked Additional Genetic Contributor, was another name.
My father's.
I looked up.
Daniel was pale.
Eleanor had covered her face.
And suddenly I understood why Richard had been so desperate to keep those babies away from me.
The children weren't simply connected to my inheritance.
They were connected to a secret my father had taken to his grave.
Then Daniel pointed to a final line at the bottom of the file.
“Marcus,” he whispered.
“There's something else.””
I looked down.
The document listed a third embryo.
<text weight="semibold">Status: Previously transferred. Outcome unknown.</text>
And beside it was a date.
May you like
A date from seven years earlier.
The exact date Sophie had supposedly died.
