Chapter 3: The Man Who Buried the Truth

The person who stepped out of the black car was not Daniel.

Ethan had expected his father.

He had prepared himself for anger, for shouting, for another impossible explanation.

But the man standing beside the car was someone else.

Someone older.

Someone Ethan had never seen before.

He wore a dark suit, polished shoes, and the kind of expression that made people move out of his way without being asked.

Claire’s grip tightened around Ethan’s hand.

“Don’t let him get close.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Who is he?””

Claire didn’t answer.

The man closed the car door behind him and walked slowly toward them.

“Claire.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that made Ethan feel more nervous.

Claire stepped in front of Ethan.

“Stay away from him.””

The man stopped.

His eyes moved to Ethan.

And for a moment, Ethan felt like he was being studied.

Not looked at.

Studied.

“So this is him,” the man said.

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The man ignored him.

“You look exactly like her.””

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“Leave.””

The man sighed.

“You always make things harder than they need to be.””

Ethan looked between them.

“You know each other?””

The man finally looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire answered before he could.

“Because he helped your father hide the truth.””

The man’s expression didn’t change.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“Because it’s true.””

Ethan felt his stomach twist.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of his life that everyone else seemed to know except him.

“Who are you?”” Ethan demanded.

The man looked at him for several seconds.

Then he reached into his coat.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

But he wasn’t reaching for a weapon.

He pulled out a wallet.

Inside was an identification card.

“My name is Victor Hale.””

Ethan stared.

The name meant nothing.

But the way Claire reacted meant everything.

“You know him,” Ethan said.

Claire looked away.

“I knew him a long time ago.””

Victor gave a humorless smile.

“She knows more than that.””

“Stop,” Claire said.

Ethan turned to her.

“What is he talking about?””

Neither of them answered.

The silence was becoming unbearable.

“Everyone keeps telling me there are things I don’t understand,” Ethan said.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I’ve spent my whole life believing my mother died. I’ve spent my whole life believing my dad was the only person who stayed.””

He looked at Claire.

“Now I find out you’re alive.””

Then at Victor.

“Now you show up.””

Then back at Claire.

“And nobody will tell me why.””

The old station went quiet.

Finally, Claire stepped closer.

“You deserve the truth.””

Victor looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

She ignored him.

“Your father and I were married before you were born.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“But what you don’t know is that Daniel wasn’t always the person you know today.””

Ethan looked down.

“What happened?””

Claire swallowed.

“When you were born, we were happy.””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“You were the loudest baby in the hospital. You cried every time someone put you down.””

For a second, Ethan saw something different in her eyes.

Not fear.

Not sadness.

Love.

“The first time I held you, I promised I would protect you no matter what.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Then everything changed.””

Victor crossed his arms.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“No more lies.””

Victor said nothing.

Claire continued.

“Daniel discovered that you weren’t safe.””

Ethan frowned.

“Safe from what?””

Claire hesitated.

“From people who wanted something from our family.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“You’re right.””

She looked at him.

“Because the person who put you in danger was someone close to us.””

Ethan felt cold.

“Who?””

Claire looked toward Victor.

Ethan followed her gaze.

Victor’s face remained unreadable.

Then Claire said:

“Your grandfather.””

The words hung in the air.

Ethan stared.

“My grandfather?””

“Daniel’s father.””

“But my grandfather died.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Claire looked down.

“When you were three.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“My dad told me my grandfather died before I could remember him.””

Claire’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because he wanted you to forget him.””

Ethan stepped back.

“How many things about my life are fake?””

Nobody answered.

The question hurt because he already knew.

Victor walked closer.

“You need to understand something, Ethan.””

Claire immediately warned him.

“Don’t.””

But Ethan held up a hand.

“No. Let him talk.””

Victor looked at him.

“Your father did what he believed was necessary.””

Ethan’s anger rose.

“He lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

Victor didn’t defend Daniel.

“He did.””

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Victor looked at Claire.

Then back at Ethan.

“Of losing you.””

Ethan shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

Claire’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Victor ignored her.

“This belongs to you.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Something your mother left behind.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Victor, no.””

“It’s time.””

“No, you don’t get to decide that.””

Victor’s expression hardened for the first time.

“And you don’t get to disappear for thirteen years and pretend everything is fine.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“What does he mean?””

Claire looked away.

The answer was written all over her face.

She had secrets too.

Victor handed Ethan the envelope.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

The handwriting was messy.

But familiar.

Ethan had seen it before.

On birthday cards.

On old notes stored in the box in his closet.

His mother’s handwriting.

The top of the page had one sentence.

Ethan,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

His hands shook.

He kept reading.

I need you to know something.

Your father did not abandon me.

He did not stop loving you.

But he made a choice that changed all our lives.

Ethan looked up.

“Why would she write that?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because she knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

A sound interrupted them.

Footsteps.

Not from Victor.

Not from Claire.

From behind them.

Ethan turned.

Daniel stood at the entrance of the old train station.

His face was pale.

His breathing heavy.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Ethan’s father spoke.

“Ethan.””

The way he said his name broke something inside him.

Not angry.

Not controlling.

Afraid.

Claire stepped backward.

“Daniel…”

Daniel looked at her.

Thirteen years of pain passed between them in one glance.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“I can explain.””

Ethan held up the letter.

“Can you?””

Daniel stopped.

His eyes moved to the paper.

And Ethan saw it.

The exact moment his father realized what he had lost.

The chance to keep hiding.

“You read it.””

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“She knew.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You knew she was alive.””

The question came out like a whisper.

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

Ethan felt tears burning his eyes.

“You knew.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

“No.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

His father stopped.

Ethan shook his head.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they destroy everything I believe.””

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time, Ethan saw something he had never seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

“I never wanted you to hate me.””

Ethan stared.

“Then why did you let me believe my mother was dead?””

Daniel’s eyes closed.

The answer came slowly.

“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

A cold wind moved through the station.

Ethan looked at Claire.

Then Victor.

Then his father.

Three adults.

Three different stories.

Three people who claimed they were protecting him.

But only one truth could exist.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ethan, there is something you need to know about the night your mother disappeared.””

Ethan held his breath.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

His face filled with pain.

“She wasn’t taken from us.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“She left because…”

He stopped.

The words seemed impossible for him to say.

Then he finished:

“Because she was the reason someone came after you.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

And Claire’s face broke.

Because she knew.

May you like

She knew exactly what Daniel was accusing her of.

And she didn’t deny it.
