Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Door

Ethan heard the words.

But his mind refused to accept them.

It was like someone had spoken a language he didn’t understand.

Your father.

The person who had packed his lunches.

The person who taught him how to ride a bike.

The person who sat beside his bed during thunderstorms and told him monsters weren’t real.

That person.

The same person everyone kept warning him about.

Ethan slowly turned toward Daniel.

His father looked like he had aged ten years in a few seconds.

“Tell him it’s not true,” Ethan whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

“Dad.””

Daniel looked at him.

His eyes were full of something Ethan had never seen before.

Shame.

“I can explain.””

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Ethan—”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Michael looked away.

Claire covered her mouth.

Even Richard seemed quiet.

Ethan looked at all of them.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody corrected him.

“You all knew something.””

His breathing became uneven.

“And I was the only person who didn’t.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

“How did you want me to know?””

Daniel stopped.

Because there was no good answer.

Ethan laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Did you even plan to tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

That was enough.

Ethan felt something break inside him.

All his life, he had believed his father was the one person who never left.

Now he wondered if Daniel had simply been the best actor.

Michael stepped closer.

“I know this is hard.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Michael stopped.

“You disappeared.””

The words hit harder than Ethan expected.

“You disappeared, and everyone acted like I was supposed to understand.””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Ethan wiped his face quickly.

“I spent years wondering why my family was broken.””

His voice shook.

“I thought maybe my mom didn’t love me enough to stay.””

Claire started crying.

“I did love you.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Then why?””

She had no answer.

That hurt too.

Michael took a deep breath.

“Your father didn’t take you because he wanted to hurt you.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Then why did he?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

And Daniel finally spoke.

“Because I was trying to save you.””

Ethan stared.

“Save me from what?””

Daniel looked around the station.

Then at Richard.

“From him.””

Richard smiled.

“Still blaming me.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Your grandfather wasn’t the only danger.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Michael.

“Tell him.””

Michael hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“The night you disappeared, we discovered Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Ethan felt a chill.

“Who was with him?””

Michael looked at Claire.

“Someone inside the family.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Michael answered.

“Me.””

The station went completely silent.

Ethan stared.

“You?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I helped create the plan.””

Claire whispered:

“Michael…”

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know what it looks like.””

Ethan shook his head.

“What was the plan?””

Michael looked down.

“To move Ethan somewhere safe.””

“That sounds familiar.””

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“Everyone says that.””

Michael accepted the anger.

“Because it was true.””

“Then why did everyone lie?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Because after that night, we realized the person we trusted was the person watching us.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

Michael continued.

“The person who attacked the house knew things only someone close to us could know.””

A memory flashed in Ethan’s mind.

The way Daniel reacted to the photograph.

The way everyone avoided certain names.

The way his father always seemed afraid.

“So you thought it was me?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Michael looked at Richard.

“Your grandfather.””

Richard sighed.

“This is becoming ridiculous.””

Michael ignored him.

“Richard had access to everything.””

“He knew where we lived.””

“He knew about the documents.””

“He knew about Claire’s plans.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“What plans?””

Claire hesitated.

Michael answered.

“She planned to expose him.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“And you tried to stop her.””

Richard smiled.

“You’re hearing only one side.””

“Then tell yours.””

Richard looked at Ethan.

For the first time, his confidence seemed weaker.

“My family was falling apart.””

Ethan almost laughed.

“You mean because people found out what you were doing?””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You are too young to understand power.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I understand enough.””

Richard stared at him.

“You think this is about good people and bad people.””

“Isn’t it?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“No.””

He looked around the station.

“Everyone here made choices.””

His eyes landed on Daniel.

“Especially your father.””

Daniel looked away.

Ethan noticed.

“What choice?””

Nobody spoke.

Richard stepped closer.

“Ask him what happened after he found you.””

Ethan turned.

“Dad?””

Daniel remained silent.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“I changed your identity.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

“I made sure nobody could find you.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It means I erased everything connected to your past.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You mean my name?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I removed records.””

The words felt impossible.

“My birth records?””

“Yes.””

Ethan stared.

“You changed my life.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You changed my life.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Ethan turned away.

Because suddenly every birthday, every school record, every memory felt uncertain.

Michael stepped forward.

“There’s one more thing.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Michael reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small wooden box.

Claire immediately recognized it.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Michael looked at her.

“I found it the night you disappeared.””

Ethan frowned.

“What is it?””

Michael handed it to him.

Ethan opened the box.

Inside was a small bracelet.

A baby bracelet.

The kind hospitals put around newborns.

His name was written on it.

ETHAN PARKER.

But underneath his name was another line.

A line he had never seen before.

A second surname.

Ethan stared.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

Then Michael.

Finally, he looked at Richard.

Because Richard was the only person who seemed unsurprised.

“What does this mean?””

Claire whispered:

“It means your father’s family wasn’t the only family you came from.””

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked at him sadly.

“Your mother had a secret before she met Daniel.””

Ethan felt the room spin.

“No.””

Claire stepped forward.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She cried.

“I tried.””

“When?””

The question echoed through the station.

Before Claire could answer, Ethan’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

Ethan answered.

A voice came through.

A voice he had never heard before.

But somehow recognized.

Older.

Female.

Shaking.

“Ethan?””

He froze.

“Who is this?””

A long pause.

Then:

“My name is Rebecca Morgan.””

Claire’s face turned white.

Ethan looked at her.

The woman on the phone continued:

“I’m your grandmother.””

Ethan couldn’t move.

Because Claire had always told him her parents were dead.

The voice trembled.

“I’ve been trying to reach you for thirteen years.””

Ethan whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Rebecca’s voice became urgent.

“No, Ethan.””

A pause.

Then:

“The impossible thing is that your mother never told you why she really ran.””

The call crackled.

And before the line went dead, Rebecca said one final sentence.

“Your mother was not hiding from your grandfather.””

May you like

Ethan held his breath.

“She was hiding from me.””
