Chapter 5: The Letter Hidden for Thirteen Years

Ethan did not want to take the envelope.

Every instinct inside him screamed not to touch it.

Because he had learned something over the last few days.

Every secret came with a price.

Every answer created another question.

And every person who claimed to protect him had lied.

But his hand moved anyway.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He reached toward Richard Parker and took the envelope.

The paper felt old.

Fragile.

Like whatever was inside had been waiting a very long time to be discovered.

“Ethan.””

Daniel’s voice stopped him.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

A warning.

Ethan looked at his father.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“Because he wants you to believe his version.””

Richard smiled.

“My version?””

He looked amused.

“Interesting choice of words from a man who spent thirteen years creating a fake life for this boy.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You still think you can control everything.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone went silent.

His voice shook.

But he didn’t care.

“Just stop.””

He held up the envelope.

“I’m tired of everyone telling me what I should believe.””

The old station fell quiet.

Ethan looked at Richard.

“I’m going to open this.””

Richard nodded.

“Good.””

Then Ethan looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not afraid of Richard.

Afraid of what Ethan would find.

That hurt more.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a stack of papers.

The first page was a photograph.

A security camera image.

The quality was poor.

Black and white.

But Ethan could still see what it showed.

A house.

His childhood home.

And a figure standing near the back door.

The date printed underneath made Ethan freeze.

The night he disappeared.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“This is from our house.””

Daniel looked at the image.

His expression changed.

“I’ve never seen that.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course you haven’t.””

Ethan looked up.

“What is it?””

Richard walked closer.

“This is the proof that your mother lied about what happened that night.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Ethan turned.

“Then explain.””

Claire looked at the photograph.

Her face became pale.

“I didn’t know this existed.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s because you weren’t the one who found it.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Who did?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Daniel remained silent.

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked away.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“Tell me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I found the camera footage after your mother left.””

Ethan stared.

“You found it?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I was trying to understand what happened.””

“You had proof and said nothing?””

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

Richard interrupted.

“He knew exactly what it meant.””

Daniel turned.

“Shut up.””

Richard smiled.

“You always hated that I knew your weakness.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“What weakness?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Your father always believed people could change.””

The words sounded almost like an insult.

“He thought if he protected everyone, everyone would eventually forgive him.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at Claire.

“It means your mother wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

And this time, Ethan noticed something.

She wasn’t looking at him with anger.

She was looking at him with disappointment.

“Daniel.””

His father swallowed.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Claire’s voice broke.

“You always say that.””

Ethan stepped back.

“What is happening?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I need you to answer something.””

Daniel stopped.

“Did you know my mother was alive all these years?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than Ethan expected.

Even though he already knew.

Hearing it was different.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe she abandoned me.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought it was safer.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone thinks they’re saving me.””

He looked around.

“Everyone keeps saying they did horrible things because they loved me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire walked toward him.

“I need to tell you what really happened.””

Ethan looked at her.

“After you were taken from the house, I found out Richard was involved.””

Richard’s expression remained calm.

“Careful.””

Claire ignored him.

“I discovered he had been watching our family for months.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why?””

“Because of the evidence I found.””

“The documents?””

“Yes.””

“What were they?””

Claire hesitated.

“Records.””

“What kind of records?””

She looked at Victor.

Victor finally spoke.

“Financial records.””

Ethan waited.

“That’s all?””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became darker.

“They showed that Richard was using his companies to hide money and manipulate people.””

Richard laughed.

“Such dramatic words.””

Victor looked at him.

“You threatened families.””

Richard shrugged.

“Business is complicated.””

Ethan felt disgusted.

“So you tried to take me because Mom found out?””

Richard looked offended.

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Richard stepped closer.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

Daniel laughed once.

A cold, angry sound.

“Don’t lie.””

Richard looked at him.

“You were always emotional.””

“And you were always cruel.””

The two men stared at each other.

Ethan suddenly understood something.

This wasn’t just about him.

This was a war that had started before he was born.

And somehow, he had been standing in the middle of it his entire life.

Richard turned back to Ethan.

“Your mother made a mistake.””

Claire went still.

“What?””

“She trusted the wrong person.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

“Ask her.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Who did you trust?””

Claire looked down.

For a moment, Ethan thought she wouldn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“Your uncle.””

Ethan frowned.

“My uncle?””

“You had an uncle before you were born.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Claire…”

“I’m done hiding.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Your father had a brother.””

Ethan stared.

“But I don’t have an uncle.””

“Because he disappeared.””

“What was his name?””

Claire’s lips trembled.

“Michael.””

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

The first real reaction Ethan had seen from him.

Fear.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Ethan saw it.

“You know him.””

Richard said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

“You know what happened to him.””

Richard looked away.

And that was the first time Ethan realized something.

The man who seemed impossible to scare had just been scared.

“Where is he?”” Ethan asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

“He was the only person who helped me escape.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Escape from what?””

Claire stared at Richard.

“From your grandfather.””

The station went silent.

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.

Everyone turned.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Ethan picked it up.

His face changed.

Because the message was not from Claire.

Not from Daniel.

Not from anyone in the station.

It was from a number he had never seen before.

The message contained only one sentence.

Ethan, if they are telling you the truth, ask your mother where she was the night your uncle disappeared.

His heart raced.

Then another message appeared.

And this one changed everything.

Because it included a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of Michael.

May you like

Standing outside Ethan’s school.

Taken that same morning.
