Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew the Beginning
The phone went silent.
But Ethan kept holding it against his ear.
Waiting.
Hoping the voice would come back.
Hoping someone would explain that this was another misunderstanding.
Another secret.
Another lie that would eventually make sense.
But the call had ended.
And the words remained.
Your mother was hiding from me.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
The old train station felt like it was holding its breath.
Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.
Daniel looked defeated.
Michael looked guilty.
Even Richard, who had spent the entire night acting untouchable, looked uncomfortable.
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Your mother is alive?””
Claire didn’t answer.
His voice became sharper.
“Is she?””
Claire swallowed.
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
“Yes.””
Ethan laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he didn’t know what else to do.
“So let me understand this.””
He looked around.
“My mother was alive.””
Claire lowered her eyes.
“My uncle was alive.””
Michael looked down.
“My grandfather was alive.””
Richard remained silent.
“And now my grandmother is alive?””
Nobody corrected him.
Ethan shook his head.
“What kind of family is this?””
No one had an answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
Not anymore.
Claire stepped closer.
“Ethan, I know how this looks.””
“You don’t.””
Her expression broke.
“You’re right.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t.””
The honesty surprised him.
“I don’t know what it feels like to discover your entire childhood was built on missing pieces.””
Her voice became softer.
“But I know what it feels like to lose you.””
Ethan looked away.
He wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But every time he saw her face, he saw the woman from the photograph.
The woman holding him.
The woman who had tattooed his name on her wrist.
Someone could make mistakes and still love you.
That was the worst part.
“You should have told me.””
Claire nodded.
“I should have.””
“Why didn’t you?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Claire looked toward the empty tracks.
“Of what you would think of me.””
Ethan frowned.
“You thought I would hate you?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“Because I left.””
The word hung between them.
“I told myself I left to protect you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But every year that passed, I knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That I was also protecting myself.””
Ethan didn’t expect that.
Claire continued.
“I was scared. I was tired. I had lost everything.””
She looked at him.
“And I was a coward.””
The station became quiet.
Ethan had expected excuses.
Not this.
Not someone admitting they were wrong.
“I don’t know how to forgive that,” Ethan whispered.
Claire nodded.
“You don’t have to.””
The answer surprised him.
“I’m not asking you to forget.””
She looked at him.
“I’m asking you to know the truth.””
Before Ethan could respond, Daniel spoke.
“Rebecca is dangerous.””
Everyone turned.
Claire’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m serious.””
“You don’t know that.””
“I know exactly who she is.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Then explain.””
Daniel hesitated.
Ethan stepped forward.
“No more secrets.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
“Rebecca Morgan was your mother’s biggest fear.””
Claire looked at him.
“That’s not fair.””
Daniel looked back.
“Isn’t it?””
Ethan felt the tension between them.
“What happened?””
Daniel sat down on an old bench.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
“Claire grew up in a difficult home.””
Claire looked away.
“My mother wasn’t perfect.””
Daniel continued.
“She controlled everything. Who Claire spoke to. Where she went. Who she trusted.””
Ethan looked at the phone.
“Rebecca?””
Daniel nodded.
“She believed she was protecting her daughter.””
Claire whispered:
“She always believed that.””
“But sometimes protection becomes control.””
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Why didn’t you tell me about her?””
Claire’s voice was quiet.
“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””
Ethan almost smiled.
“A normal life?””
He looked around.
“A life where everyone lies to me?””
Claire looked down.
“I know.””
Daniel continued.
“When Claire found the documents about Richard, Rebecca found out too.””
Ethan frowned.
“How?””
Claire answered.
“Because Rebecca had been watching Richard for years.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew what he was capable of.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Then why is she dangerous?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Michael finally spoke.
“Because Rebecca doesn’t protect people.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What does she do?””
Michael’s expression darkened.
“She controls situations.””
Daniel nodded.
“She thinks the only way to keep people safe is to remove their choices.””
Ethan thought about that.
It sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Because wasn’t that exactly what everyone had done to him?
Taken away his choices.
All in the name of love.
His phone buzzed again.
Everyone froze.
A message.
From Rebecca.
I know you are with them.
Ethan stared.
Another message appeared.
They will tell you I am dangerous.
Then another.
Ask them why they never told you about the accident.
Ethan looked up.
“What accident?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Claire went pale.
Michael looked away.
Richard suddenly became very interested in the floor.
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“What accident?””
Nobody spoke.
“Tell me.””
Daniel slowly stood.
“When you were three years old…”
Ethan waited.
“There was a car accident.””
Ethan frowned.
“I don’t remember.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
The words sent a chill through him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then at Michael.
Then finally at Ethan.
“It means your memories were affected.””
Ethan stared.
“My memories?””
“You were injured.””
“How?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Someone tried to make the car crash.””
Ethan felt sick.
“Who?””
No one answered.
His phone buzzed again.
Rebecca.
This time, it was a photo.
Ethan opened it.
And froze.
The picture showed a hospital room.
A little boy lying in a bed.
Him.
Three years old.
Beside him stood Claire.
But that wasn’t what shocked him.
The person holding Claire’s hand was someone else.
Someone Ethan recognized.
Because he had just seen her face on the phone.
Rebecca Morgan.
His grandmother.
The caption below the photo read:
Your mother was not hiding from me.
She was hiding me from them.
Ethan looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Claire stared at the photo.
Her lips trembled.
“I never wanted you to see that.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at Richard.
Then at Michael.
“Because after the accident…”
Her voice broke.
“I realized the person trying to hurt you wasn’t outside our family.””
Ethan felt his heartbeat increase.
“Then who was it?””
Claire looked directly at Daniel.
And Ethan saw something that terrified him.
Not hatred.
Not anger.
Fear.
“The person trying to hurt you…”
She whispered.
“Was the person who raised you.””
Ethan turned slowly toward his father.
Daniel looked like he had been waiting thirteen years for this moment.
And then he said something Ethan never expected.
“I didn’t cause the accident.””
A pause.
“But I know who did.””
Ethan held his breath.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“No one in this room wants to say it.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“But it was your grandfather.””
The old station went silent again.
Richard laughed softly.
“Still blaming me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Because you did it.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
And for the first time that night, the powerful man looked afraid.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And his entire face changed.
“What?””
Everyone watched him.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
His voice was barely audible.
“She found the file.””
Michael frowned.
“What file?””
Richard looked at Ethan.
Not at Daniel.
Not at Claire.
At Ethan.
“The one that proves who your real father is.””
Ethan felt the world stop.
“My real father?””
Richard smiled sadly.
May you like
And said:
“Daniel Parker is not your biological father.””
