Chapter 1: One Call Before His Promotion
My husband introduced his secretary to three hundred guests before he introduced me.
And when he finally acknowledged my existence, he did it by calling me the heaviest burden he had ever carried.
I was seven months pregnant.
I was also the only person in that ballroom who knew his promotion was built on a lie.
The ballroom of the Sterling Grand Hotel glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Waiters moved between tables carrying silver trays of champagne, while executives from across the country gathered beneath a massive screen displaying the company logo.
Tonight was supposed to be Daniel's night.
After eleven years of marriage, countless sacrifices, and more sleepless nights than I could remember, my husband was finally being considered for Senior Vice President of Operations at Whitmore Industries.
I had helped him prepare for this moment.
I had reviewed his presentations, corrected his financial forecasts, and stayed awake until two in the morning while he rehearsed speeches in our kitchen.
I had even sold my grandmother's diamond bracelet three years earlier to help him pay for a professional certification when his company refused to reimburse him.
He had promised he would never forget that.
Apparently, he had.
"Nia, sweetheart, are you comfortable?""
My mother-in-law, Eleanor, adjusted the napkin beside my plate.
"I'm fine," I answered, shifting in my chair.
"Daniel said you weren't feeling well enough to come tonight.""
"I wasn't feeling well. But this is important to him.""
Eleanor gave me a strange look.
"Well, let's hope you don't make a scene. Tonight is about Daniel.""
I looked toward the stage.
Daniel stood beside Vanessa Cole, his twenty-nine-year-old executive secretary.
Vanessa wore a red designer dress with a neckline that attracted more attention than the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.
Daniel's hand was positioned comfortably against her lower back.
I looked away.
For months, I had tried convincing myself that their relationship was professional.
The late-night calls.
The unexplained hotel charges.
The perfume on his shirts.
The way he suddenly locked his phone whenever I entered a room.
Every time I questioned him, he accused me of being insecure.
"You're pregnant, Nia. You're imagining things.""
That had become his favorite answer.
A microphone squealed.
The audience quieted as Daniel stepped onto the stage.
"Good evening, everyone!""
Applause erupted.
He smiled, adjusted his navy-blue tie, and looked toward the company's board members.
"Tonight means everything to me. This company has given me opportunities I never imagined possible.""
I smiled faintly.
I remembered when he had been a junior analyst, earning barely enough to cover our apartment.
I remembered packing his lunches and encouraging him when his applications were rejected.
I remembered the night he cried because he thought he would never become successful.
Then he lifted his champagne glass.
"But nobody reaches the top alone.""
My heart warmed.
Perhaps he would finally acknowledge everything we had sacrificed together.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
"This is Vanessa Cole. She's been the person carrying me through the most important year of my career.""
The ballroom applauded.
Vanessa lowered her head modestly.
Daniel touched her shoulder.
"Honestly, I couldn't have done this without her.""
Something inside my chest tightened.
A woman seated beside me leaned forward.
"That's his assistant, isn't it?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"She's very close to him.""
I forced a smile.
"They work together.""
The woman hesitated.
"And you must be his wife?""
"Yes. I'm Nia.""
"Oh! Of course. Congratulations on the baby.""
"Thank you.""
She glanced toward the stage.
"Strange he hasn't introduced you.""
Before I could respond, Daniel began discussing his upcoming promotion.
Then one of the senior executives near the front called out jokingly.
"Daniel! Where's the famous Mrs. Whitmore tonight?""
Daniel laughed.
"Oh, she's here somewhere.""
A few people turned toward the tables.
His eyes found mine.
Then he pointed.
"Actually, there she is.""
A spotlight shifted.
Three hundred people looked at me.
I instinctively placed a hand over my stomach.
Daniel raised his glass.
"My wife has been under a lot of stress lately. Pregnancy has made her... difficult.""
Uncomfortable laughter spread through the room.
Vanessa lowered her eyes, hiding a smile.
Daniel continued.
"She thinks I owe her every promotion I earn. But honestly, I've been carrying enough burdens already.""
Someone coughed.
I stared at him.
He wasn't finished.
"Some burdens are heavier than others.""
The room went quiet.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
I could feel the baby moving beneath my dress.
For a moment, I considered standing up and walking out.
Then I remembered something Daniel had said three weeks earlier.
If the board approves the final documents, nobody will ever question how I got here.
At the time, I hadn't understood what he meant.
Now I did.
I reached into my purse.
Daniel noticed.
"What are you doing?"" he asked into the microphone.
I took out my phone.
"Finishing something you started.""
His expression hardened.
"Don't embarrass yourself, Nia.""
I opened my contacts.
*Mr. Bennett — Board Chair.*
Daniel's smile disappeared.
He stepped down from the stage.
"Nia," he whispered sharply, "put the phone away.""
I pressed call.
Mr. Bennett answered on the second ring.
"Nia? What a pleasant surprise. Is everything all right?""
"No, sir. I need you to suspend Daniel's promotion vote.""
The ballroom fell completely silent.
Daniel stopped moving.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"What is she doing?"" she whispered.
Mr. Bennett's voice became serious.
"On what grounds?""
I looked directly at my husband.
"The grounds that Daniel has been using company resources without authorization.""
Daniel's face drained of color.
"That's ridiculous," he muttered.
I continued.
"I believe the board should review the expenses submitted under his department before approving anything tonight.""
Daniel reached for my phone.
"Give me that.""
I stepped backward.
"No.""
Mr. Bennett asked, "Do you have evidence?""
I glanced at the black leather folder beneath Daniel's arm.
He had carried it everywhere for the past two weeks.
Vanessa had even refused to let the hotel staff move it from their table.
"Yes," I answered.
"I believe I do.""
Daniel tightened his grip on the folder.
"Nia, you don't understand what you're doing.""
I almost laughed.
"You’re right. There is one thing I don't understand.""
I pointed toward the folder.
"Why is my name listed on the approval forms inside that?""
Daniel froze.
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
Mr. Bennett's voice came through the phone.
"Daniel, did you forge your wife's signature?""
The champagne glass slipped from Daniel's fingers.
It shattered against the marble floor.
And for the first time that evening, my husband looked terrified.
May you like
But the worst part?
I hadn't even told the board what he had done with the money.
