Chapter 7: The Authorization He Never Had
"He's requesting permission to make medical decisions for you and your unborn child.""
Detective Mitchell's words seemed to hang in the air.
I stared at the document in her hand.
"That's impossible.""
"Do you recognize the form?""
She placed it on the bedside table.
I picked it up carefully.
At the top was the logo of St. Catherine's Medical Network. Beneath it were several paragraphs concerning emergency medical authorization, temporary guardianship, and consent to treatment.
My name appeared on the first page.
Daniel's appeared beneath it.
*Authorized Medical Representative: Daniel Whitmore.*
I scanned the signature.
There it was again.
The extra loop in the N.
The same deliberate imitation.
The same forgery.
"I never signed this.""
Detective Mitchell nodded.
"That's what I expected. But I need you to remain calm. We have officers at reception.""
I looked toward Dr. Morgan.
"Can he make decisions about my baby?""
"Not simply because he presents a piece of paper," she answered firmly.
"You're conscious, capable of making your own decisions, and you have not granted him authority to override your consent.""
"Then why would he bring this here?""
Rachel exchanged a glance with the detective.
"That's what we're going to find out.""
A knock sounded.
One of the nurses opened the door.
"Detective, Mr. Whitmore is insisting on seeing his wife.""
Mitchell stepped into the doorway.
"Tell him he isn't permitted in this room.""
The nurse nodded and disappeared.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I declined the call.
He called again.
Then a message appeared.
*Nia, stop listening to these people. I'm your husband. I have the right to protect you.*
I showed Detective Mitchell.
She photographed the screen.
"Don't respond.""
Another message arrived.
*If you refuse to cooperate, the hospital will have no choice but to follow the authorization.*
My stomach tightened.
"What is he talking about?""
Rachel took the document and examined the bottom section.
"There's a clause here about emergency consent.""
She frowned.
"This appears to be a modified version of a standard medical authorization form.""
"Modified how?""
"The language is unusually broad. It attempts to grant the representative authority over treatment decisions if the patient is considered incapacitated.""
I looked at her.
"But I'm not incapacitated.""
"Exactly.""
Detective Mitchell studied the document.
"Do we know who prepared it?""
I shook my head.
Then a voice sounded from the corridor.
"She's my wife! You can't keep me away from her!""
Daniel.
I recognized his voice immediately.
A moment later, the door opened.
He stood in the doorway wearing the same navy suit from the gala.
His tie was loose.
His hair was disheveled.
For the first time in years, he looked like a man who had spent the night losing control of everything.
"Nia.""
He took a step toward me.
Detective Mitchell moved between us.
"Mr. Whitmore, stop.""
Daniel raised both hands.
"I'm not here to cause trouble.""
"Then you should have respected the hospital's instructions.""
He looked past her.
"Baby, please. I just want to talk.""
I stared at him.
"Why did you bring that document?""
His expression softened.
"Because I'm worried about you.""
"Don't.""
"Nia, you're under enormous stress. You've been making accusations, refusing to listen, and putting yourself through unnecessary emotional turmoil.""
Rachel stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, your wife is receiving appropriate medical care.""
Daniel ignored her.
"I've arranged for a specialist.""
"I didn't ask you to.""
"Because you don't understand the situation.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"Then explain it.""
He glanced at Detective Mitchell.
"Not here.""
"Why not?""
"Because people are listening.""
I looked at the officer.
"Let them listen.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Fine. The insurance paperwork was a mistake. I was trying to secure our financial future. The medical authorization was supposed to make sure someone could act if you had an emergency.""
"Someone?""
"Me.""
"Why would I need you to make decisions when I have my own doctor?""
His jaw tightened.
"Because you're not thinking clearly.""
Detective Mitchell immediately stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, that's enough.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Are you going to let her destroy our family?""
The detective's expression didn't change.
"Your wife is entitled to make her own decisions. You are not entitled to override them.""
Daniel looked at me again.
"Please, Nia. Think about the baby.""
I placed my hand over my stomach.
"I am.""
For a moment, he seemed to understand that I wasn't going to surrender.
Then his expression changed.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
He turned and walked toward the corridor.
Detective Mitchell followed him out.
I heard her speak to another officer.
"Keep him here. I want to know where he obtained that document.""
A few minutes later, Rachel returned with my medical chart.
"Your examination is reassuring. The baby's heartbeat is strong.""
I closed my eyes.
Relief washed through me.
"Thank you.""
She sat beside the bed.
"Nia, there's something I want you to understand. Nobody can make you accept a medical procedure or authorize someone else to make decisions for you simply because they're your spouse.""
I nodded.
"I know.""
"And we're documenting your refusal of the alleged authorization.""
I looked at the ceiling.
For the first time that evening, I allowed myself to cry.
Not because Daniel had cheated.
Not because he had stolen money.
But because I had spent eleven years believing that marriage meant someone would protect you when you were most vulnerable.
Instead, I had married someone who seemed determined to make my vulnerability useful to him.
A little later, Detective Mitchell returned.
"Mr. Whitmore has agreed to leave the premises.""
"Did he explain the document?""
"He claims his attorney prepared it.""
"Can you verify that?""
"We're working on it.""
She hesitated.
"There's something else. The hospital received a call from an individual claiming to be your legal representative.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
"Gregory Shaw.""
The name from Vanessa's earlier testimony.
Daniel's financial adviser.
"Why would he call the hospital?""
"Apparently, he wanted confirmation that your medical authorization had been accepted.""
My blood ran cold.
"Was it?""
"No. The hospital rejected it.""
Detective Mitchell opened her notebook.
"But when we checked the number he used, we discovered something interesting.""
She turned the page.
"Gregory Shaw isn't just Daniel's financial adviser.""
"Who is he?""
"He's listed as a director of Northbridge Solutions.""
The same company that had received nearly half a million dollars in suspicious payments.
I stared at her.
Then my phone buzzed.
An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*YOUR HUSBAND'S REAL PLAN — READ BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.*
There was one attachment.
A scanned contract.
And at the bottom of the first page was Daniel's signature.
But the name beside it wasn't mine.
May you like
It was my brother's.
Ethan Whitmore.
