Chapter 8: My Brother's Name on the Contract
I opened the attachment with trembling fingers.
The document was titled:
*Northbridge Holdings — Private Loan and Security Agreement.*
My brother's name appeared beneath the heading.
Ethan James Whitmore.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
By the time I reached the financial terms, my mouth had gone dry.
The agreement stated that Ethan had personally guaranteed a loan of $350,000.
The lender was Northbridge Holdings.
The collateral included several business assets.
But there was something else.
A clause on the final page referenced a residential property.
My house.
The home Daniel and I had purchased four years earlier.
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
"Can you read this?""
She took the phone.
Her eyes moved across the screen.
"Where did this come from?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you authorize your house to be used as collateral?""
"No.""
She continued reading.
Then she stopped.
"Mrs. Whitmore, this document appears to contain a signature from your brother and a property authorization bearing your name.""
I felt sick.
"That's impossible. Ethan has never had anything to do with our mortgage.""
Detective Mitchell examined the attachment information.
"Don't forward or delete this email. We'll preserve it.""
I nodded.
My mind was racing.
Why would Ethan guarantee a loan for Northbridge?
Why would Daniel use our house?
And why had the sender chosen to contact me now?
I dialed my brother.
He answered after four rings.
"Hey, sis.""
His voice sounded tired.
"Ethan, where are you?""
"At the restaurant. Why?""
"I need you to answer something honestly.""
He laughed weakly.
"That sounds serious.""
"Did you sign a loan agreement with Northbridge Holdings?""
Silence.
I closed my eyes.
"Ethan?""
"Who told you?""
My heart sank.
"So it's true.""
He sighed.
"Look, Nia, I can explain.""
"Did you sign it?""
"Yes.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why?""
"Because I needed the money.""
"Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars?""
"The restaurant was drowning. We had overdue suppliers, rent, payroll. I thought I could turn things around.""
"You borrowed money from a company Daniel controls?""
"I didn't know Daniel controlled it.""
"Then who arranged the loan?""
"Gregory Shaw.""
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
She wrote down the name.
"Ethan, did you know our house was listed as collateral?""
"What?""
I repeated the question.
He was quiet for several seconds.
"No. They told me the loan was secured against business assets.""
I looked at the document.
"There's a property authorization here with my name.""
"What?""
"Someone signed it.""
Ethan's breathing changed.
"Nia, I swear I didn't do that.""
"Did Daniel tell you he was arranging this?""
Another silence.
Then Ethan spoke.
"He said he could help me.""
I felt tears gathering.
"How long has this been going on?""
"About six months.""
Six months.
The same period during which Daniel had started hiding his financial statements.
The same period during which money began disappearing from our savings.
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I knew you'd be angry.""
"You're my brother.""
"I know.""
"I would have helped you find another solution.""
He sighed.
"Daniel told me you wouldn't understand. He said you were worried about the pregnancy and didn't want more financial pressure.""
I looked at the hospital window.
Outside, the city lights flickered.
Daniel had used my concern for my family as a weapon against every member of it.
"Did he give you the money directly?""
"No. Gregory arranged everything.""
"Did you receive the full amount?""
"Two hundred and seventy thousand. The rest was supposed to cover fees and insurance.""
My stomach tightened.
"Insurance?""
"Yeah. Daniel said it was part of the agreement.""
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
She motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
"Ethan, what insurance?""
He hesitated.
"I don't know exactly. Something about protecting the loan if the borrower couldn't repay.""
"Was my name involved?""
A long silence followed.
Then he whispered, "Yes.""
My chest tightened.
"What did you sign?""
"Nothing with your name.""
"Then why is it on this contract?""
"I don't know!""
His voice broke.
"Nia, I didn't know he was doing this. I swear.""
I believed him.
Ethan had always been impulsive, but he wasn't cruel.
He had made terrible financial decisions before.
But he had never deliberately tried to hurt me.
I softened my voice.
"Listen to me. Don't contact Daniel. Don't contact Gregory. Don't sign anything else.""
"What's happening?""
"There's an investigation.""
"An investigation?""
"Yes.""
He began breathing faster.
"Am I in trouble?""
"I don't know yet. But we need the truth.""
He went quiet.
Then he said something that made me sit upright.
"There's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"Daniel asked me to meet him tomorrow morning.""
"Where?""
"At the old warehouse near the river.""
"Why?""
"He said he needed me to sign a correction to the loan agreement.""
I looked at Detective Mitchell.
She immediately began writing.
"What time?""
"Nine.""
"Do not go.""
"But he said—"
"Ethan, listen to me. Do not go anywhere near him.""
My brother went quiet.
Then he whispered, "Nia, I think he's scared.""
I almost laughed.
"Good.""
"No, I mean really scared. He called me three times tonight. He said if the documents became public, all of us would lose everything.""
I looked at the contract again.
"What else did he say?""
Ethan hesitated.
"He said the loan was never supposed to be repaid.""
I felt cold.
"What?""
"He said the money was part of a larger arrangement. That once the insurance claim was approved, everything would be settled.""
My mouth went dry.
The insurance claim.
The two-million-dollar policy.
The loan.
The forged medical report.
Pieces of the puzzle were beginning to connect.
Detective Mitchell took the phone.
"Ethan, this is Detective Laura Mitchell. I need you to preserve every message and document you received from Daniel or Gregory Shaw. Do not meet either of them without speaking to us first.""
Ethan sounded frightened.
"Am I going to prison?""
"That depends on what the investigation establishes. Cooperation is important.""
She ended the call.
I stared at the screen.
"Detective, what does this mean?""
She pulled out a chair.
"It means we may be looking at a coordinated financial scheme involving multiple forged documents.""
"Why would Daniel insure my life?""
"We don't know yet.""
"But the loan was connected to the policy.""
"Possibly.""
She paused.
"There's something I want to investigate. The beneficiary change was filed nine days ago, but the original policy was created weeks earlier. Someone may have been preparing this arrangement long before the promotion gala.""
I looked at my stomach.
My baby kicked.
I placed both hands over it.
"Can you protect Ethan?""
"We can arrange an interview and make sure he doesn't walk into an ambush.""
I nodded.
Then another notification appeared.
This time, it was from my mother.
A photograph.
No message.
I opened it.
It showed a handwritten note lying on a kitchen counter.
I recognized Daniel's handwriting immediately.
*When the time comes, make sure Nia doesn't interfere. The baby and the money must be protected.*
Beneath the note was a second line.
*Ethan will sign everything. He has no choice.*
I stared at the screen.
My mother had sent the photograph.
May you like
Then a message followed.
*I found this hidden in Daniel's office. Nia, I think he plans to hurt your brother, too.*
