Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Black Folder
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I stared at Vanessa.
"What does that mean?""
She glanced at Daniel.
He shook his head once.
It wasn't a warning.
It was an order.
"Vanessa," Daniel said quietly, "think very carefully before you say anything else.""
She laughed bitterly.
"That's what you always tell me.""
Mr. Bennett stood.
"Miss Cole, you are not required to protect anyone in this room. But if you have information relevant to this investigation, now is the time to provide it.""
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
"I handled Daniel's expenses for almost two years. At first, everything was legitimate. Then he started asking me to create separate vendor accounts.""
Daniel interrupted.
"That's a lie.""
She ignored him.
"He told me the company used too many approval layers. He said he wanted to streamline the process.""
Patricia leaned forward.
"Did you create those accounts?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who instructed you to do so?""
"Daniel.""
He slammed his palm against the table.
"She's lying to save herself!""
Vanessa flinched.
Then she looked at him with an expression I had never seen before.
"You're the one who told me to put Nia's name on the documents.""
I felt my fingers go cold.
Daniel stared at her.
"Shut up.""
"You said she would never notice.""
"Vanessa.""
"You said she didn't understand business.""
He moved toward her.
One of the security officers stepped between them.
Mr. Bennett pointed toward the chair.
"Daniel, sit down.""
Daniel reluctantly returned to his seat.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why my name?""
She swallowed.
"Because the account required an additional authorized signatory. Daniel said you were familiar with his work and would support the arrangement.""
"I never authorized anything.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you do it?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Because he told me he loved me.""
The words landed like a slap.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he rubbed his forehead as if we were all inconveniencing him.
"Vanessa, this isn't the time.""
She turned toward him.
"You promised me we'd be together after the promotion.""
I stared at her.
There it was.
The truth I had spent months trying not to acknowledge.
Daniel had not merely been sleeping with his secretary.
He had been building a future with her while I carried his child.
Vanessa continued.
"You told me you were going to leave Nia after the baby was born.""
My throat tightened.
Daniel finally looked at me.
"Nia, don't listen to this.""
I almost smiled.
"Which part should I ignore? The forged signatures or your plans to abandon your pregnant wife?""
He leaned forward.
"You're twisting everything.""
"No, Daniel. I'm finally hearing everything.""
Mr. Bennett opened the black folder.
"Let's return to the documents.""
Daniel immediately reached for it.
"Those are confidential.""
"Then you shouldn't have brought them into a room full of board members.""
Mr. Bennett removed several pages.
He examined the first.
Then the second.
His eyebrows drew together.
"What's this?""
He turned the page toward Patricia.
She read it.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"This is a property purchase agreement.""
I frowned.
"What property?""
Patricia glanced at the address.
"An apartment on Madison Avenue.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Vanessa looked away.
Mr. Bennett continued reading.
"The buyer is listed as Northbridge Holdings. The deposit was transferred from a Whitmore operational account.""
I looked at the amount.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
"Who lives there?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered, "I do.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I held the edge of the table.
"You live in an apartment Daniel bought with company money?""
She shook her head.
"He told me it was his personal investment.""
Daniel stood again.
"That's enough! This is a private matter!""
I looked at him.
"You bought her an apartment?""
"I can explain.""
"With money taken from your company?""
"It wasn't stolen.""
"Then why did you hide it?""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Mr. Bennett closed the folder.
"Daniel, your promotion is suspended indefinitely. Effective immediately, you are placed on administrative leave pending a full forensic audit.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You can't do that. I brought in the Henderson account. I saved this company millions.""
"You also appear to have approved payments using a forged signature.""
"You don't have proof!""
Mr. Bennett pointed toward the documents.
"That is precisely why we are beginning an investigation.""
Daniel turned toward me.
"This is your fault.""
I said nothing.
"You wanted this, didn't you? You couldn't stand seeing me succeed.""
I slowly pushed my chair back.
"Daniel, I sold my grandmother's bracelet to pay for your certification. I worked two jobs when you were unemployed. I stayed awake helping you prepare for every interview.""
My voice shook, but I kept speaking.
"And tonight, you stood on a stage and called me a burden.""
He looked away.
"I was joking.""
"No. You were showing everyone what you really think of me.""
I stood carefully.
The baby moved beneath my hand.
For the first time that night, I wasn't thinking about Daniel's career.
I was thinking about the little person who would soon depend on me.
Mr. Bennett approached.
"Nia, I want to apologize. None of this should have happened.""
"Thank you.""
"We'll arrange for the documents to be examined. If you have additional records, please preserve them.""
"I will.""
As I reached for my purse, Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Wait.""
I turned.
She was holding something.
A small black USB drive.
"There's something on here you need to see.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Vanessa, don't.""
She placed it on the table.
"I copied the original files before he deleted them.""
Mr. Bennett picked it up.
"What's on this drive?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Everything. The original approvals, the transfers, and the messages where Daniel told me to use your signature.""
I stared at the little device.
"Why are you giving it to me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because there's one more document. And I think you deserve to know what he planned to do after tonight.""
Daniel moved so quickly that security had to restrain him.
"Don't open that!""
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
"Why not?""
Daniel struggled against the officers.
"Because she doesn't know what she's looking at!""
Vanessa took a trembling breath.
Then she said the words that made every person in that room go still.
"There's a life insurance policy, Nia.""
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
Vanessa continued.
"Your husband changed the beneficiary three weeks ago.""
I could barely breathe.
"What policy?""
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
May you like
"The one covering you.""
And suddenly, the forged signatures and missing money seemed like the smallest part of what my husband had done.
