Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW WHY CLAIRE DIEDAdrian stared at the security monitor.

For a moment, his brain refused to process what he was seeing.
The woman standing inside his mansion…
was impossible.
Because she was supposed to be dead.
The police records.
The funeral.
The family announcement.
Everything confirmed it.
But the camera did not lie.
A woman stood in the hallway.
Older.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
And very much alive.
Adrian grabbed his phone and rushed downstairs.
Not because he trusted her.
Because after everything he had discovered…
he knew one thing.
The people who were supposed to be gone were usually the ones carrying the biggest secrets.
The woman stood beside the fireplace.
When Adrian entered, she turned.
Their eyes met.
And immediately…
Adrian recognized her.
“Emma?”
The woman nodded.
“Yes.”
Emma was Claire’s younger sister.
The last person Adrian expected to see.
Seven years earlier, Emma disappeared after a car accident overseas.
Everyone believed she died.
Including Adrian.
“What are you doing here?”
Emma looked at him.
“Trying to finish what Claire started.”
Adrian kept his distance.
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let everyone believe you were dead.”
Emma looked down.
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because they were watching.”
The answer made Adrian tense.
“Who?”
Emma looked around the mansion.
“Everyone who wanted Claire silent.”
She explained.
After Claire discovered Victoria’s plan, she did not investigate alone.
She contacted Emma.
Because Emma had experience with financial crimes and hidden accounts.
Together, they discovered the truth.
Victoria was not acting alone.
Charles Whitmore was involved.
Michael Blackwood was involved.
Even William Blackwood knew pieces of the plan.
But the biggest discovery was something even worse.
There was another person controlling everything.
Someone who had been invisible.
“Who?”
Emma looked at him.
“The person who introduced Victoria to you.”
Adrian froze.
Because he remembered.
A charity event.
A dinner.
A recommendation.
Someone had said:
“You two would be perfect together.”
A person he trusted.
A person who claimed to want the best for him.
Emma handed him a file.
Inside was a photograph.
Adrian looked at it.
And his hands went cold.
The person standing beside Victoria was not Charles.
Not Michael.
It was…
Adrian’s own uncle.
Robert Blackwood.
“No.”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
“Robert died five years ago.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Robert disappeared.”
Another lie.
Another fake death.
Another person hiding in the shadows.
Adrian opened the file.
The truth was horrifying.
Robert had created the entire operation.
Victoria.
Charles.
The fake companies.
The hidden accounts.
Everything.
His goal was never just Ethan’s inheritance.
It was the Blackwood empire itself.
“Why Ethan?”
Emma answered quietly.
“Because Ethan was the one thing they could never control.”
Adrian frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Your son inherited something nobody knew about.”
“What?”
“A controlling trust created by Claire’s family.”
Adrian froze.
“The trust?”
Emma nodded.
“It was designed to prevent anyone corrupt from taking over the company.”
Adrian finally understood.
Ethan was not just an heir.
He was the lock.
The person standing between the criminals and everything they wanted.
That was why Victoria wanted him.
That was why Claire was targeted.
That was why everyone kept lying.
Then Emma revealed the most painful truth.
“Claire knew she might not survive.”
Adrian looked away.
“She recorded the videos because she knew someone would find the truth eventually.”
A tear appeared in Emma’s eyes.
“She wanted you to know something.”
“What?”
Emma handed him another envelope.
“This.”
Inside was a letter.
Claire’s handwriting.
Adrian immediately recognized it.
His hands shook.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, then I am gone.
He stopped.
But continued.
I know you will blame yourself. Please don’t.
You loved me. You loved Ethan. That was always enough.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The pain he had buried for months returned.
The letter continued.
The people who hurt us believe power is everything.
They believe money can replace love.
They are wrong.
The reason they fear Ethan is not because of his inheritance.
They fear him because he knows what they forgot.
A pause.
Then the final line:
He knows what family is supposed to be.
Adrian held the letter against his chest.
For the first time in months…
he felt like Claire was speaking to him again.
But the moment did not last.
The mansion lights suddenly went out.
Emma immediately stood.
“He found us.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Who?”
Before she answered…
a voice came from the darkness.
“You always were too emotional, Adrian.”
The lights returned.
A man stood at the entrance.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Robert Blackwood.
Alive.
Adrian stared.
“You.”
Robert smiled.
“Yes.”
“How?”
Robert walked inside.
“You should know by now.”
A pause.
“Dead people are very useful.”
Emma stepped forward.
“You killed Claire.”
Robert looked at her.
“No.”
A smile.
“I simply allowed events to happen.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew everything.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Robert looked at him.
“Because I was waiting.”
“For what?”
Robert looked toward Ethan’s bedroom.
“For Ethan to become old enough.”
Adrian felt a wave of anger.
“You were waiting to take my son?”
Robert smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“I was waiting for him to take everything from you.”
Then Robert revealed the final secret.
The trust Ethan inherited contained one condition.
If Adrian was ever removed from control…
Ethan would become the legal owner of the entire Blackwood empire.
Robert did not want to kill Adrian.
He wanted Adrian to destroy himself.
“You made one mistake.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
Robert smiled.
“You thought I was still the man who trusted family.”
A pause.
“I’m not.”
Adrian pressed a button on his phone.
Robert looked confused.
“What did you do?”
Adrian smiled.
“Recorded everything.”
Robert’s face changed.
For the first time…
fear appeared.
Because he finally understood.
The man he spent years manipulating…
had stopped playing his game.
The next morning, every major news network received the files.
Every secret.
Every recording.
Every transaction.
The Blackwood family empire collapsed in a single day.
But Robert had one final card.
Before police arrested him, he sent Adrian one message.
A single photograph.
Of Claire.
Taken after the accident.
Alive.
And beside her…
was Ethan.
But Ethan was only five years old.
The date on the picture was impossible.
Because according to official records…
Claire had already been dead.
Adrian stared at the image.
Because now there was one final mystery.
If Claire survived the accident…
May you like
what really happened to her afterward?
And why did she hide from her own son?
