Chapter 4 - UNCLE PAUL HAD BEEN SELLING ACCESS TO OUR NAME

Paul Bellamy was fifty-two.

My mother’s younger brother.

Charming.

Always late.

Always “between ventures.”

Grandfather loved him and did not trust him with operations.

For good reason.

Paul owned 30% of Meridian Civic Partners.

The rest hidden through nominee LLCs tied to Stephen Vale.

Why?

Paul had introduced Richard to Bellamy’s private rooms three years earlier.

He knew staff.

Reservation systems.

Foundation people.

He could make meetings look normal.

Did he know bribes?

He said no.

He thought Meridian was corporate hospitality consultancy.

He earned commissions for arranging events and introductions.

Then emails.

Paul:

Use Bellamy invoice. Nobody questions Dad’s place.

There.

Then:

Foundation route may work if Lydia keeps it clean.

That was worse.

He knew “route.”

Grandfather confronted.

Not privately.

With independent counsel present.

“Did you use my foundation to move money?”

Paul cried.

“I was helping donors.”

“Did you receive commission?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Over three years:

$620,000.

Grandfather closed eyes.

Paul insisted he never knew public officials involved.

Maybe.

But he deliberately concealed his financial interest from foundation.

Conflict.

Current fraud investigation.

Then I asked:

“Did you know Richard’s company meetings?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know invoice inflation?”

“I knew hospitality fees were added.”

“To what?”

“Consulting.”

“By whom?”

“Meridian.”

So yes, he knew Bellamy invoices being used to charge more.

Did he know extra funded improper payments?

He denied.

Investigators decide.

Then family scene.

Grandfather:

“I gave you opportunities.”

Paul:

“You gave Emma everything.”

My mother? Wait I haven't established mother. I am granddaughter. Let's make my mother Caroline Bellamy, Arthur's daughter, died? Could be alive. No need. Paul resents older sister maybe. Better Emma is me; avoid. Let's use my mother, Caroline.

Paul felt Grandfather favored Caroline, who was capable and currently executive vice chair.

I had stayed away from company partly family expectations.

Paul believed shut out.

Then Richard offered relevance.

Again resentment exploited.

But choices.

Grandfather said:

“You were not shut out. You were removed from finance after you borrowed against company without approval.”

There.

History.

Paul hated.

Then he used surname externally.

Then whether Grandfather hid Paul's earlier issues from board?

Yes.

Years ago, he handled privately.

Another pattern.

He paid Paul’s unauthorized loan, moved him out, did not disclose fully because family embarrassment.

That allowed Paul retain network/reputation.

Now larger.

Grandfather had to face.

He said:

“I protected him from consequences.”

I answered:

“And now employees are cleaning it.”

He nodded.

Then board disclosed historical related-party incident.

No whitewash.

Paul placed on leave from any family entities, which were few.

Then authorities considered charges.

He cooperated.

Returned commissions through asset sales.

Likely plea to fraud/conspiracy if evidence.

No family immunity.

Then my mother Caroline arrived.

She was furious.

At Paul.

At Grandfather.

At me?

“Why were you serving Richard Vale personally?”

I said:

“Because I volunteered.”

She looked at Grandfather.

“You let her?”

He replied:

“Yes.”

“Dad.”

“I misjudged risk.”

Good.

Then Mom turned to me.

“You are thirty. I cannot ground you.”

Correct.

She hugged.

We hadn't seen much? Fine.

Then media loved billionaire family twist.

We hated.

But transparency.

Then my reason for hidden identity.

I used surname Blake from maternal grandmother professionally because Bellamy name opened doors.

I wanted actual skill.

Grandfather respected.

But after this, secrecy not sustainable.

I had to decide role.

Grandfather offered chief compliance officer?

Too fast.

I refused.

“I found one problem. That doesn’t make me executive.”

Good.

I joined special review committee as nonvoting adviser then later maybe.

Professional.

Then Julia Mercer.

Vale board asked her to return?

She declined initially.

“I don’t want job as reward for being right.”

Good.

She cooperated.

Then she and I became friends.

She taught me corporate investigations.

No weird romance.

Then Richard’s assault trial separate.

He offered apology?

Through lawyer:

“I regret incident.”

Not enough.

I declined private settlement that required NDA.

I accepted civil settlement later without NDA perhaps, with portion to employee safety fund? Don't saint. I kept compensation for injury/legal fees and separately Bellamy funded safety. Fine.

Then criminal assault plea.

Probation/fine/anger management perhaps, separate from bigger federal case.

Then financial charges pending.

Then Paul’s cooperation revealed one more issue.

Richard wasn’t top.

There was a city procurement official named Martin Keane who demanded donations through nonprofits.

Richard did not invent entire bribery network.

He participated.

Again nuance.

Investigators widened.

But we don't need too many names. Keep Martin as public official.

Then Julia’s recordings directly implicated.

The restaurant was meeting place because elegant privacy.

But no secret spy lair.

May you like

Just people assuming servers invisible.

Theme.
