Chapter 8 - PAUL CAME BACK WITHOUT A BUSINESS CARD

After serving sentence/terms, Uncle Paul requested family dinner.
No Bellamy office.
No private club.
Grandfather’s home.
He arrived without assistant.
No pitch.
He looked older.
He apologized to me.
“I knew Richard treated staff badly.”
I stared.
“How badly?”
“Not assault.”
“But?”
“Rude. Threatening.”
“Why keep booking him?”
“Money.”
There.
Then:
“I told myself staff were paid to handle difficult guests.”
That sentence.
I said:
“No one is paid to be degraded.”
He nodded.
Then he apologized to Grandfather for foundation.
Caroline.
Employees publicly? Through company statement.
No demand forgiveness.
Then Grandfather asked:
“Do you want back in business?”
Paul said:
“No.”
That surprised.
He started smaller consulting under compliance monitor? Maybe restrictions. He chose unrelated real estate brokerage after allowed.
He had to build without Bellamy name? He still has surname. But no family endorsement.
Good.
Then family relationship slowly.
Grandfather could love son without board seat.
Lesson.
Then Paul said:
“I thought being excluded from company meant excluded from family.”
Grandfather:
“I helped teach you that.”
There.
Family/business boundaries.
Then Richard years later sent letter from prison.
Not asking money.
Apology.
I remember the steak because it is absurd that something so small exposed everything.
Then:
You were right. I treated people according to what I thought they could do to me.
Maybe growth.
Then:
I am sorry I pushed you.
I read.
Did not respond.
Not required.
Then Julia read? Not hers.
No.
Then one day I saw a customer berating server at another restaurant.
My instinct to step in personally.
Manager handled immediately.
Good.
Systems.
I did not need hero.
Then I noticed diners stayed seated.
That's okay.
Not every event needs viral solidarity.
The staff had authority.
That is better.
