Chapter 7 - MY GRANDFATHER TOLD ME WHY HE LET ME WAIT TABLES

One night after cases settled, Grandfather and I sat alone in Bellamy’s after close.
Table Twelve empty.
He asked:
“Do you still want to run any of this someday?”
I looked around.
“I don’t know.”
He laughed.
“Good answer.”
Then I asked:
“Why did you really let me work floor?”
“You demanded.”
“No. Why didn’t you stop me after you suspected Vale?”
He went quiet.
Then:
“Pride.”
His.
He liked idea granddaughter proving herself.
Old-school story.
He wanted to believe Bellamy heir could handle any room.
I stared.
“So you let narrative matter more than risk.”
“Yes.”
Same flaw different form.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
Good.
He admitted.
Then he said:
“I also thought you needed to see company from floor.”
“That part was true.”
“But?”
“You could have taught me without hiding Julia’s meeting.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Then:
“No more secret tests.”
“Agreed.”
Good.
Then succession.
Grandfather did not announce me heir/CEO.
Instead family ownership moved to governance trust with independent board.
Caroline remained vice chair.
I would need years experience and board process.
Paul’s shares? He retained economic ownership subject restitution but lost governance rights for period. Not stripped magically.
Grandfather revised estate transparently.
No “granddaughter gets everything because assaulted.”
Thank God.
I said:
“I don’t want story where falling on floor earns company.”
He smiled.
“Neither do I.”
Then I built career.
Compliance, operations.
Eventually chief risk officer after six years? Could.
Earned.
But not necessarily CEO.
Then workers.
Miguel became restaurant GM later because he was good, not because witness.
Anthony retired.
Staff safety policies stayed.
Employee advisory council formal.
Then Bellamy Foundation.
Independent directors.
Donor transparency.
No family alone signs pass-through grants.
Audited.
Food-access work continued legitimately.
Grandfather said:
“Boring is expensive.”
I said:
“Scandal more.”
He agreed.
Then my public identity.
I stopped using Blake professionally? I chose Emma Bellamy Blake? Could use Bellamy openly now.
I kept Blake as middle/professional because it was my work identity.
No need erase.
Then one interviewer asked:
“Would you still work as waitress now?”
I said:
“No.”
Why?
“Because pretending I understand long-term service work after six weeks would be insulting.”
Good.
Then:
“But I still cover a shift badly at family events.”
Humor.
Then social media made memes of entire restaurant standing.
I hated romanticization.
Because plenty of workers get assaulted without billionaires.
So Bellamy funded industry-wide training? Could be seen PR. Better joined existing hospitality worker safety nonprofit and supported legal aid. No naming after me.
Good.
Then Dr. Helen Brooks became friend? Not needed.
She later emailed:
“Glad everyone stood.”
I replied:
May you like
“Me too.”
Simple.
