Chapter 11: The Letter That Proved He Never Told Me Goodbye
I read the letter three times before I could speak.
Vanessa had sent me a photograph of the document.
It was dated four months after Daniel filed for divorce.
The first paragraph was addressed to the fertility clinic.
The second contained instructions about the stored reproductive material.
But the final paragraph was what made my hands tremble.
Although my marriage to Nia Bennett has legally ended, I believe there may still be an opportunity for us to pursue parenthood in the future. I would prefer that the clinic maintain the existing treatment arrangement until I have resolved the personal circumstances surrounding our separation.
I read it again.
Then I looked at the date.
Four months after the divorce.
By then, Daniel had already told his family I was infertile.
He had already begun dating Vanessa.
And he had already moved into the apartment he later shared with his new wife.
Yet he was telling the clinic that he still considered me a possible co-parent.
I called Laura immediately.
"Have you seen this?""
She asked me to forward the image.
A few minutes later, she called back.
"This is important, Nia.""
"What does it mean?""
"It establishes that Daniel made a written statement about his intentions after your divorce. We still need the complete file, including any subsequent amendments and the status of the stored material.""
"Could he have made decisions involving me without my consent?""
"Not lawfully. But we need to establish what was actually done.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Why would he tell the clinic he wanted to have a child with me while telling everyone else I couldn't have children?""
Laura's voice softened.
"That's a question I suspect the records may help answer.""
That evening, I went to Vanessa's house.
Patricia was no longer there.
Daniel was sitting in the living room when I entered.
He stood immediately.
"What is she doing here?""
Vanessa didn't look up from her phone.
"She has every right to know what you wrote.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Who showed you that letter?""
"Does it matter?""
"That's private information.""
I almost laughed.
"You keep using the word private whenever your actions become public.""
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Why are you sharing clinic documents with her?""
"Because they involve her.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You're making this worse.""
Vanessa placed her phone on the table.
"No, Daniel. You did that when you wrote a letter saying you still considered Nia your intended co-parent.""
He looked down.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he sat.
I remained standing.
"Why did you write it?""
He rubbed his palms together.
"I was trying to keep my options open.""
"What options?""
"I wanted to become a father.""
"With me?""
He looked up.
"At the time, I wasn't sure.""
I felt something sharp twist in my chest.
"You had already divorced me.""
"I know.""
"You had told everyone I was infertile.""
"I was under pressure.""
"You had started dating Vanessa.""
He looked away.
I took a breath.
"Did you ever intend to tell me about this arrangement?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Answer her.""
Finally, he spoke.
"I thought there might be a way to have a child without reopening the marriage.""
I stared at him.
"What does that even mean?""
He looked frustrated.
"I wanted a biological child. I thought we could work out an arrangement. You would carry the pregnancy, and we would co-parent.""
The room went silent.
I felt as though someone had slapped me.
"You wanted me to carry your child after divorcing me?""
"I thought you'd consider it.""
"After everything you did?""
"I believed you still wanted to be a mother.""
I laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"I did want to be a mother. That didn't mean I wanted to remain connected to you forever.""
He leaned forward.
"You could have had the family you always wanted.""
I stared at him.
"I wanted a husband who loved me. Not a man who discarded me as a wife but expected to keep me available as the mother of his children.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel stood.
"That's not fair.""
I pointed toward the letter.
"Then explain why you didn't tell me.""
He looked at the floor.
"Because I knew you'd say no.""
The honesty was almost refreshing.
Almost.
"So you had your mother forge my signature.""
His face tightened.
"I didn't tell her to forge anything.""
"But you knew she had handled the paperwork.""
"I trusted her.""
"You trusted her enough to let her sign my name?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"I didn't know exactly what she did.""
Vanessa stood.
"Daniel, stop hiding behind your mother.""
He looked at her.
"What do you want me to say?""
"The truth.""
He took a long breath.
Then he finally admitted something.
"I didn't want Nia to disappear from my life completely.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because I thought if we had a child together, we'd always be connected.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
There it was.
Not love.
Not regret.
Control.
He hadn't wanted to rebuild our marriage.
He hadn't wanted to repair the damage.
He had wanted to preserve a permanent connection to the woman he had publicly humiliated.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
"Is that why you were so determined to invite her to my baby shower?""
Daniel frowned.
"No.""
"Because you wanted to see whether she was still available to you?""
"That's ridiculous.""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"You invited your ex-wife to our baby shower to make her feel inferior, while privately keeping a plan alive to have a child with her.""
He looked away.
"I wasn't thinking clearly.""
I picked up my handbag.
"That's the problem, Daniel. You never think about anyone except yourself.""
He followed me toward the door.
"Nia, wait.""
I turned.
"Don't.""
"I want to apologize.""
I looked at him.
"Then apologize to the woman you lied about for seven years. Apologize to the woman whose signature your mother copied. Apologize to your current wife for making her believe she was entering an honest marriage.""
His eyes were wet.
"And to you?""
I considered the question.
"An apology won't give me back the years I spent believing I was somehow less of a woman because of your diagnosis.""
He lowered his head.
I opened the door.
But Vanessa called my name.
"Wait. There's something I haven't told you.""
I turned.
She held a small white envelope.
"I found this in Daniel's desk.""
I frowned.
"What is it?""
"An old letter from the clinic. It was never opened.""
Daniel moved quickly.
"Vanessa, give me that.""
She stepped away.
"No.""
She handed it to me.
The envelope contained a letter addressed to Daniel.
The date was seven years earlier.
The subject line read:
*IMPORTANT: PATIENT CONSENT AND REPRODUCTIVE MATERIAL STORAGE*
I opened it.
The first paragraph stated that the clinic had received a disputed authorization.
The second explained that the clinic had suspended further action until the signatures could be verified.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
We have also received a request from the patient's family representative to terminate the storage arrangement. However, no action can be taken without the required authorization from all relevant parties.
I looked up.
"Your mother tried to terminate the arrangement?""
Daniel's face went white.
Vanessa stared at him.
"Why?""
He didn't answer.
I looked back at the letter.
There was a handwritten note at the bottom.
Please do not notify Nia until this matter has been resolved.
The note was signed by Patricia Carter.
I slowly lowered the page.
For seven years, I had believed Daniel and his mother wanted to erase me from their lives.
Now I was discovering that they had been making decisions about my future while deliberately keeping me uninformed.
And the most disturbing part was that the clinic had refused to carry out the instructions.
Which meant something had stopped them.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who stopped the arrangement?""
He stared at me.
May you like
Then, finally, he answered.
"I did.""
