Chapter 7: The Consent Form That Changed Everything
Daniel stood in the hospital corridor with his phone pressed against his ear.
Nobody moved.
"Can you repeat that?"" he asked.
The woman on the other end spoke again.
Daniel's face gradually lost its color.
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"What is it?""
He raised one finger, signaling her to wait.
"No, you're mistaken. I never authorized that.""
The woman continued.
Daniel turned away from us.
"Listen carefully. I need you to send me a copy of that document immediately.""
He ended the call.
For several seconds, he simply stared at the phone.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"What did you sign?""
"Nothing important.""
She gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"Daniel, we've reached the point where even your lies are becoming predictable.""
"Vanessa, this has nothing to do with you.""
"You're carrying my child's medical history, and you're telling me it has nothing to do with me?""
He looked toward Patricia.
"Can you please give us a moment?""
Patricia didn't move.
"No.""
Daniel sighed.
I picked up my handbag.
"Vanessa, I should probably leave.""
She looked at me.
"Please wait.""
Daniel turned sharply.
"Nia, you don't need to hear this.""
I met his eyes.
"Then stop creating situations where I keep finding out about your secrets.""
His jaw tightened.
Before he could respond, his phone vibrated.
An email had arrived.
He opened the attachment.
I watched his expression change as he read.
First confusion.
Then disbelief.
Finally, something resembling panic.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Show me.""
He locked his phone.
"No.""
"Daniel.""
"It's an old medical document.""
"Then why are you frightened?""
He put the phone in his pocket.
"I need to speak to my lawyer.""
Patricia stared at him.
"Your lawyer? What kind of medical consent form requires a lawyer?""
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa's voice became almost inaudible.
"Is it about Nia?""
He looked at me.
And that was enough.
Vanessa turned toward me.
"What does this have to do with you?""
"I don't know," I answered honestly.
Daniel shook his head.
"Nothing. It has nothing to do with her.""
But his eyes told a different story.
The next morning, I received an email from an attorney representing the fertility clinic.
The subject line read:
*NOTICE REGARDING HISTORICAL PATIENT DOCUMENTATION*
I nearly deleted it.
Then I saw Daniel's name.
The message explained that the clinic had located a signed document in an archived file connected to our original fertility treatment.
Because the document contained information about both patients, the clinic wanted to arrange a secure review with the appropriate parties.
I called Dr. Brooks.
"Have you seen this?""
"Yes," she replied.
"The clinic contacted me yesterday.""
"What does the form say?""
"I haven't reviewed the original document yet. But I understand it relates to the treatment plan you and Daniel discussed before your divorce.""
I frowned.
"We never agreed on a treatment plan.""
There was a pause.
"That's precisely why they want to verify the authorization.""
I sat down.
"What authorization?""
"The clinic's records suggest Daniel signed a consent form involving the handling of reproductive material collected during his treatment.""
My fingers went cold.
"Reproductive material?""
"Yes.""
I remembered Daniel's appointments.
The blood tests.
The procedures.
The specialist's recommendation.
But I had never known he had authorized anything involving stored samples.
"Doctor, are you saying he gave permission for something without telling me?""
"I can't confirm that until the original document is reviewed.""
I thanked her.
After ending the call, I stared at the kitchen wall.
Seven years earlier, I had believed our marriage ended because Daniel couldn't accept his infertility.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether he had made decisions about our future long before he filed for divorce.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
"Nia, did the clinic contact you?""
"Yes.""
"Can we meet?""
"Is everything okay?""
"No," she whispered.
"But I think you deserve to know what I found.""
We agreed to meet at a small café near the hospital.
When I arrived, Vanessa was already sitting in a corner booth.
She looked exhausted.
Her maternity gown had been replaced by jeans and a loose sweater. A glass of water sat untouched in front of her.
Patricia was beside her.
Vanessa slid her phone across the table.
"I found this in Daniel's archived email.""
It was a message from a fertility clinic dated six years earlier.
The subject line read:
*Confirmation of Treatment Authorization*
I read it twice.
The email stated that Daniel had authorized the clinic to proceed with a treatment arrangement involving stored reproductive material.
I looked up.
"Was this before you met him?""
"Yes.""
"Did he ever tell you?""
"No.""
She opened another attachment.
It was a scanned form bearing Daniel's signature.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Patient requests that all future communications regarding this matter be directed exclusively to him.
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. But there's another message.""
She opened it.
This one was from Daniel to a clinic administrator.
Please ensure my former wife is not contacted regarding any subsequent administrative decisions. Our marriage is ending, and I do not want unnecessary complications.
My stomach tightened.
"He was already planning to keep things from me.""
Patricia leaned forward.
"There's more.""
She pointed to the final paragraph.
It referenced an additional consent document that had been filed separately.
The same document the clinic had just discovered.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Why would he need to keep you from knowing?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Daniel told me he had never wanted children until he met me.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"He said his first marriage had become miserable because of the pressure to have a baby. He told me he'd eventually accepted that fatherhood wasn't something he wanted.""
I looked back at the email.
"Then why did he continue fertility treatment?""
"That's what I want to know.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Vanessa's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Daniel.
We need to talk. Don't make any decisions until I explain.
Vanessa stared at it.
Then she typed a response.
Bring every document from the clinic. No more secrets.
She put the phone down.
I looked at her.
"Are you sure you want to keep involving me?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because you were the only person who told me the truth before I had to discover it myself.""
I reached across the table and gently touched her hand.
"Whatever happens, make sure your baby gets the medical care she needs.""
Vanessa nodded.
May you like
Then she whispered something that made my heart sink.
"Nia, I think Daniel was planning to become a father before he even divorced you.""
