Chapter 2: The Secret He Took Into His Second Marriage
Daniel didn't answer Vanessa's question.
Instead, he reached for the report.
"Give me that.""
Patricia pulled it against her chest.
"Don't you dare grab that from me.""
"Mom, stay out of this.""
"I'm not your mother, Daniel. I'm her mother. And I want to know what you've been hiding.""
Vanessa looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath her.
"What future partner?"" she repeated.
Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.
"That was standard medical language.""
I almost laughed.
Seven years earlier, he had used the same excuse when the doctor recommended genetic counseling.
Everything was standard.
Everything was complicated.
Everything was somebody else's misunderstanding.
Except his lies.
Those were always deliberate.
I pulled a chair away from a nearby table and helped Noah sit down.
"Stay with your brother," I told Eli.
"I'll be right here.""
Eli nodded.
Daniel watched me.
"You've changed," he muttered.
I looked at him.
"Yes. I have.""
Vanessa placed the report on the table.
"Explain the diagnosis.""
Daniel sighed.
"I had a medical condition. That's all.""
"Then why did you tell me your first wife was infertile?""
"I didn't want to discuss personal medical details.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"You didn't want to discuss them, so you invented a completely different story?""
"Vanessa, you don't understand.""
"Then explain it!""
Several guests began quietly moving toward the ballroom entrance.
The party planner stood near the dessert table, pretending to rearrange a tray of cupcakes.
Patricia wasn't pretending anymore.
"Daniel, when you first met my daughter, you told us your marriage ended because your wife refused to have children.""
Daniel looked irritated.
"That isn't exactly what happened.""
"You said she was incapable of becoming pregnant.""
"I was upset.""
"And you said she had wasted your best years!""
His face reddened.
"Can we please have this conversation privately?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. Apparently, you brought your private lies into our marriage. So we're discussing them here.""
I watched her carefully.
I didn't hate Vanessa.
For a long time, I had imagined confronting her.
I had pictured myself telling her everything, perhaps even asking how she could marry a man who had destroyed another woman's life.
But the truth was, Vanessa hadn't been there when Daniel lied to me.
She hadn't sat in the doctor's office.
She hadn't watched him withdraw his hand when the diagnosis was explained.
She had only heard his version.
And Daniel had always been very good at making himself sound like the injured party.
"How did you get pregnant?"" Vanessa asked suddenly.
Daniel's head snapped toward her.
"What?""
"How did you get pregnant?""
He looked away.
"Vanessa—"
"Answer me.""
She placed one hand protectively over her stomach.
"You told me we were lucky. You told me the doctors had been wrong about your chances. You said we conceived naturally after years of trying.""
I looked at her.
"Did he tell you he had been tested again?""
She didn't answer.
I continued.
"Did he show you a fertility report?""
"No.""
"Did he ever explain the treatment he received after our divorce?""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Stop interrogating her.""
I looked directly at him.
"Then tell her.""
He clenched his fists.
For a moment, I thought he might shout.
Instead, he lowered his voice.
"I had a procedure.""
Vanessa blinked.
"What procedure?""
"After the divorce, I visited another specialist.""
"And?""
"He recommended treatment.""
"What treatment?""
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Testicular sperm extraction.""
Vanessa slowly sat down.
I remembered hearing about the procedure years later from a mutual acquaintance.
It was a surgical method that could sometimes retrieve sperm in men with severe production problems. It wasn't a guarantee of fatherhood, but it could provide an opportunity for assisted reproduction.
Daniel had pursued it after our divorce.
He had never told me.
I didn't know whether he had undergone the procedure before meeting Vanessa or during their relationship.
But the fact that he had concealed the diagnosis from her was becoming impossible to ignore.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"So you knew there was a possibility you could have children?""
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
"Yes.""
"And you still told me your first wife was the problem?""
"I didn't want you to think something was wrong with me.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Something was wrong with your honesty.""
That sentence landed harder than any insult I could have delivered.
Patricia sat beside her daughter.
"Sweetheart, let's go home.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. I want to understand everything first.""
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
"You're humiliating me.""
I picked up my handbag.
"Now you understand how it feels.""
He stepped toward me.
"You had no right to bring those children here.""
I looked at my sons.
"They have a right to know where they came from.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Don't use them against me.""
"I didn't.""
"Then why are you here?""
I took a breath.
"Because you sent me an invitation.""
He frowned.
"What?""
I reached into my handbag again and removed a folded card.
It was a printed invitation to the baby shower.
Vanessa's name was written across the front.
Daniel looked confused.
"I never sent you anything.""
"I know.""
I turned the card over.
There was a small handwritten note beneath the printed details.
You should come. It might be good for you to see what a real family looks like.
Daniel stared at it.
Vanessa looked at him.
"What's that?""
I handed her the card.
Her expression changed as she read the message.
"Who wrote this?""
Daniel said nothing.
Patricia looked at the handwriting.
"That's your handwriting, isn't it?""
He snatched the card.
"Someone must have added that.""
I shook my head.
"No. The invitation came from your office. Your assistant confirmed that you personally approved the guest list.""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"You contacted my assistant?""
"She contacted me.""
He looked genuinely startled.
I continued.
"Three days ago, she called to apologize. Apparently, she thought you wanted me to attend because you intended to make a public announcement.""
Vanessa stood.
"What announcement?""
I reached into my handbag and removed a second envelope.
This one contained a copy of an email.
"I was hoping Daniel would explain it himself.""
He lunged forward.
"Give me that.""
I stepped back.
Vanessa caught his arm.
"Don't touch her!""
For the first time that afternoon, Daniel looked at his wife as though he didn't recognize her.
I handed Vanessa the email.
She read it silently.
Then she read it again.
Her expression became unreadable.
"What is this?"" she whispered.
I looked at Daniel.
"Perhaps you should explain.""
He said nothing.
Vanessa turned the phone screen toward him.
It was an email from Daniel to his assistant, sent two weeks earlier.
The subject line read:
*BABY SHOWER — FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENT*
The message contained a list of proposed guests.
And beneath my name was a sentence that made Vanessa's fingers tremble.
Invite Nia and make sure she attends. I want everyone to see that I've finally built the family she couldn't give me.
Vanessa looked up.
"You invited her to humiliate her?""
Daniel swallowed.
"It was a joke.""
"A joke?""
"I was trying to make a point.""
"What point?""
He looked at me.
"That I moved on.""
I shook my head.
"No, Daniel. You wanted me to see you celebrating a family while believing I had none.""
His mouth tightened.
"And you showed up with two children.""
"Yes.""
"Do you expect me to believe they're mine?""
The question hung in the air.
I had been waiting for him to ask it.
For years, I had imagined that moment.
I reached into the envelope and removed another document.
This time, it wasn't a medical report.
It was a laboratory certificate.
A DNA paternity test.
Vanessa looked at it.
Daniel didn't move.
I placed the paper on the table between us.
"The boys are yours, Daniel.""
His face drained of color.
Vanessa stared at the certificate.
"How?""
I looked at Daniel.
"That's something you should have told your wife.""
Then I turned toward the ballroom doors.
But before I could take another step, Daniel said something that stopped me.
"Those boys weren't supposed to exist.""
Eli looked up from his chair.
"Mommy?""
I froze.
Daniel seemed to realize what he'd said.
But it was too late.
May you like
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
"What did you just say?""
