Chapter 5: The Medical Record He Tried to Bury
I barely slept that night.
After putting Eli and Noah to bed, I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea that had gone cold.
My phone lay beside it.
I kept replaying Dr. Brooks's words.
There was a finding that was never fully investigated.
Daniel had always treated his medical diagnosis as a personal humiliation.
But what if there was more to it?
What if the doctor had warned him about something that could affect his future children?
I didn't want to jump to conclusions.
Medical conditions were complicated. Genetic findings required careful interpretation. And Vanessa deserved accurate information, not frightening guesses from someone who had been divorced from her husband for seven years.
At 8:15 the following morning, I called Dr. Brooks.
"Good morning, Nia.""
"Good morning. I've been thinking about what you said.""
"I expected you might.""
"Can you tell me what the finding was?""
She paused.
"I can explain what was documented in your shared treatment history, but Daniel's private records require his authorization.""
"Of course.""
"During the original evaluation, his specialist noted an abnormality that warranted genetic counseling. The recommendation was to investigate whether a chromosomal or inherited factor contributed to his reproductive difficulties.""
I gripped my mug.
"Did he complete the testing?""
"The file we received at the time did not contain the results of a completed investigation.""
"So nobody knows what it means?""
"Not from those records alone. It would be irresponsible to draw conclusions.""
I nodded, even though she couldn't see me.
"Does that mean his baby could be affected?""
"Not necessarily. It means the family history should be reviewed by a qualified specialist. Vanessa's obstetrician can coordinate appropriate testing if needed.""
"Can you contact her?""
"If she gives us permission, yes.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
I was about to prepare breakfast when someone knocked on my front door.
Three firm knocks.
I looked through the window.
Daniel.
Of course.
I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.
"What are you doing here?""
He looked exhausted.
His expensive shirt was wrinkled, and his hair appeared as though he'd been running his hands through it all morning.
"We need to talk.""
"No, we don't.""
"Nia, please.""
I stared at him.
"You're standing outside my house at eight in the morning. What exactly do you think we have to discuss?""
He glanced down the street.
"Can I come in?""
"No.""
His jaw tightened.
"You're still angry.""
"You're still avoiding the question.""
He exhaled.
"Vanessa is asking questions.""
"She should.""
"She wants copies of my old medical records.""
"Then she should ask your doctor.""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Dr. Brooks contacted me.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did she tell you?""
"That you called her.""
"She called me.""
He shook his head.
"Why are you getting involved?""
I almost laughed.
"Daniel, you came to my house. You're the one getting involved.""
He stepped closer to the door.
"Listen. Vanessa is pregnant. She's emotional. She doesn't need old medical problems turning into some kind of family crisis.""
"Then give her the information she needs.""
"There's nothing to give.""
"Then why are you afraid of her seeing it?""
His expression hardened.
"Because I know how these things work. Once a woman gets something into her head, she won't let it go.""
I looked at him for several seconds.
"Did you really just say that?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Nia, I made mistakes.""
"You lied about me being infertile.""
"I was ashamed.""
"You let your mother tell people I was broken.""
"I couldn't control what she said.""
"You could have told her the truth.""
He looked away.
I continued.
"You could have told your friends. You could have told Vanessa. You could have corrected the story at any point during the last seven years.""
He finally raised his eyes.
"I didn't think it would matter anymore.""
"To whom?""
He didn't answer.
I heard footsteps behind me.
Eli appeared in the hallway, dragging his stuffed dinosaur.
"Mommy?""
I turned.
"Good morning, sweetheart.""
He looked past me.
"Who's that?""
Daniel stared at him.
For a brief moment, I saw something soften in his expression.
"Hello, buddy.""
Eli looked at me.
"Do we know him?""
I swallowed.
"He's someone Mommy used to know.""
Daniel flinched.
Eli held up his dinosaur.
"His name is Captain.""
Daniel nodded awkwardly.
"That's a nice name.""
Eli looked unimpressed.
"He's a dinosaur.""
I almost smiled.
"Go finish your breakfast, sweetheart. I'll be right there.""
Eli disappeared down the hallway.
Daniel watched him go.
"You really have a good life now.""
I closed the door slightly.
"Yes.""
"Are you happy?""
"Very.""
He looked down.
Then he said something I hadn't expected.
"I sometimes wonder what would have happened if we'd stayed together.""
I stared at him.
"We didn't have a marriage, Daniel. We had a secret you expected me to protect while you blamed me for it.""
"I was scared.""
"So was I.""
He looked up.
For a second, neither of us spoke.
Then he reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
"Take this.""
I didn't accept it.
"What is it?""
"A copy of my old medical report.""
"Why are you giving it to me?""
"Because I want you to understand that I wasn't trying to hurt anyone.""
I looked at the paper.
"Did you give Vanessa a copy?""
He hesitated.
"No.""
"Then why should I take it?""
"Because you know what happened. You know how difficult it was for me.""
I shook my head.
"Daniel, I spent years believing that I was the reason you couldn't become a father. You let me carry that shame. Don't come here asking me to carry your fear, too.""
He lowered his hand.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
Vanessa.
He answered.
"What?""
I could hear her voice through the speaker.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"I'm handling something.""
"At Nia's house?""
He looked startled.
"How do you know?""
"Your assistant told me you left early. I called her because I couldn't find you.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Vanessa, I'll be home soon.""
"Did you go to get the records?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel?""
"Yes.""
"Did you get them?""
He looked at the paper in his hand.
"I'm working on it.""
Her voice became colder.
"Then I want you to bring them directly to the hospital. My doctor has arranged a consultation for this afternoon.""
Daniel went pale.
"Today?""
"Yes. And I've invited someone else.""
"Who?""
"My obstetrician's genetic counselor.""
He glanced at me.
Vanessa continued.
"She wants to review your history before we make any decisions about additional testing.""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Vanessa, we can discuss this privately.""
"No. We should have discussed it privately seven months ago, before you let me believe there was nothing important to know.""
He closed his eyes.
Then Vanessa said the words that made him grip the phone.
"There's something else, Daniel.""
"What?""
"I found an email from your old specialist in your archived inbox.""
He stopped breathing for a moment.
"What email?""
"One sent six years ago. It says you were advised to complete genetic counseling before planning another biological pregnancy.""
Daniel's face turned gray.
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"Why did you never go back?""
He didn't answer.
And then she added:
"There's an attachment. It's a signed acknowledgment showing you received the warning.""
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
I looked at him through the open doorway.
May you like
For the first time, he wasn't trying to convince me that everything was a misunderstanding.
He looked like a man who had just discovered that the truth had been waiting in his own inbox all along.
