Chapter 2: The Call That Silenced the Ballroom
My father didn't ask what happened.
He didn't ask whether I was crying, whether Dominic had defended me, or whether Chloe had apologized.
He asked one question.
“Are you safe, sweetheart?””
I glanced at my husband, who was standing beside his mother while his sister continued accusing me of theft.
“No,” I answered honestly.
“But I will be.””
There was a brief silence on the line.
Then my father's voice changed.
“Stay exactly where you are. Don't let anyone move your belongings. I'm coming.””
The call ended.
I slipped the phone into my hand and turned toward the table where the wedding gifts had been arranged.
Eleanor intercepted me before I reached it.
“Who was that?””
“My father.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Wonderful. Now we're bringing your family into this circus.””
“Your daughter accused me of stealing a diamond in front of two hundred people,” I replied.
“I think the circus started without my help.””
Chloe crossed her arms.
“Tell him to bring a lawyer. I'll need one when I press charges.””
I looked at her bare finger.
“Then you should hope the truth is on your side.””
Her lips tightened.
“You're threatening me?””
“No. I'm giving you a chance to stop.””
Chloe laughed and turned toward the guests.
“Did everyone hear that? She thinks she can intimidate me!””
Several guests lowered their phones. Others kept recording, their expressions shifting from curiosity to disgust.
Amanda remained near the pillar, clutching her silver purse.
I watched her thumb move nervously over its clasp.
“Vivienne,” Amanda said suddenly, “maybe you should just go home. This isn't good for the baby.””
I tilted my head.
“Why are you worried about my baby, Amanda?””
She blinked.
“Because you're upset.””
“I'm upset because someone tore my dress and accused me of a crime. Did you see who took Chloe's ring?””
Amanda's fingers tightened around the purse.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Chloe pointed at me.
“Stop interrogating people! You're the one who needs to explain herself.””
I took a slow breath.
“Then call the police.””
The room fell quiet.
Dominic stepped toward me, lowering his voice.
“Vivienne, please don't do this.””
I turned to him.
“Don't do what?””
“Turn a family misunderstanding into a criminal investigation.””
I stared at him.
“A misunderstanding? Your mother tore my gown. Your sister dumped my belongings onto the floor.
You watched them do it. What exactly would you call it?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I'm trying to protect everyone.””
“Everyone except me.””
His mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Eleanor seized the opportunity.
“Dominic, stop letting her manipulate you. Your sister is the bride. This is her day.””
I looked at the woman who had spent four years reminding me that I wasn't good enough for her son.
“Does being the bride give Chloe permission to humiliate a pregnant woman?””
“Don't twist my words,” Eleanor snapped.
“Then stop giving me words that need twisting.””
A startled laugh escaped someone near the dance floor.
Eleanor's face darkened.
She turned toward the hotel's event manager, who had approached after hearing the commotion.
“Get this woman out of here.””
The manager, a Black woman named Renee, glanced at my torn gown, then at the access card near my feet.
“Mrs. Cole,” Renee said cautiously, “I need to understand what happened before I can—”
“I'm telling you what happened!”” Eleanor interrupted.
“She stole my daughter's diamond. Remove her.””
Renee looked at me.
“Ma'am, would you like medical assistance?””
The question nearly undid me.
Not because I needed medical assistance, but because a stranger had shown more concern for me in ten seconds than my husband had shown all evening.
“Thank you,” I said.
“I'm all right. Please preserve the security footage from this ballroom and the adjoining corridor.””
Renee's expression changed.
“Of course.””
Chloe scoffed.
“Security footage? What are you expecting it to show?””
“The truth.””
“Then it will show you sneaking around my dressing room!””
“Perhaps.””
For the first time, Chloe seemed uncertain.
She looked toward Amanda.
It was a small movement, barely a second long.
But I saw it.
So did Renee.
The event manager touched her earpiece and quietly spoke to someone on the security team.
Chloe immediately raised her voice.
“Why are you calling security? The thief is standing right here!””
Renee remained calm.
“Standard procedure, ma'am. We need to establish what happened to the missing property.””
Eleanor stepped forward, her voice sharp enough to cut through the music.
“Do you know who I am?””
“Yes,” Renee replied.
“You're the groom's mother.””
“I am Eleanor Cole. My family has hosted events at this hotel for years. You will not embarrass us.””
Renee met her gaze.
“I'm sorry this is distressing, but I have to follow hotel security procedures.””
Eleanor looked as if someone had slapped her.
“You'll regret this.””
I almost smiled.
That was the problem with the Coles.
They believed every person in the world had a price, a weakness, or someone they feared.
They had never understood that professionalism could be stronger than intimidation.
A security guard appeared near the ballroom entrance. He spoke quietly to Renee, who nodded and walked toward a side corridor.
Amanda shifted her weight.
Then she moved toward the exit.
I watched her.
“Leaving so soon?””
She froze.
“I'm getting some air.””
“Your purse must be heavy.””
Her eyes flashed toward mine.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“Nothing. I was admiring it.””
Chloe stormed between us.
“Leave Amanda alone! She's the only person here who has shown me any loyalty.””
I looked at Amanda's trembling hands.
“Loyalty is a beautiful thing,” I said.
“Especially when it doesn't require lying.””
Amanda's face crumpled for half a second before she forced a smile.
“I'm not lying.””
“I hope you're right.””
Dominic grabbed my elbow.
“Can we talk privately?””
I gently removed his hand.
“No.””
His expression hardened.
“Vivienne, I'm your husband.””
“And I was your wife when you watched your mother tear my dress.””
He flinched.
“I didn't know what to do.””
“You knew exactly what to do. You just didn't want to upset them.””
“That's not fair.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Neither was what you did to me.””
A soft mechanical click sounded from the ballroom doors.
Every head turned.
Two security officers entered, followed by a tall Black man in a dark formal suit, his silver beard neatly trimmed.
My father.
Behind him came the hotel's general manager.
The general manager spotted me and immediately stepped aside.
“Mr. Cole,” he said respectfully.
My father's eyes found mine.
He saw the torn gown.
The scattered belongings.
My hands protecting my stomach.
Then he looked at Dominic, who stood motionless beneath the chandeliers.
My father didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
“Who touched my daughter?””
Eleanor's lips parted.
Chloe lowered her hand.
And for the first time that evening, the Cole family looked as though they had realized they might have made a terrible mistake.
But my father wasn't finished.
He turned to the head of security.
“Lock down the ballroom footage. Nobody leaves until we know where that diamond went.””
Amanda's silver purse slipped slightly in her hands.
Something inside it made a small, unmistakable metallic sound.
My father heard it.
So did I.
He turned toward her.
“Miss, would you mind opening your purse?””
Amanda stared at him.
Then she looked at Chloe.
May you like
And Chloe, suddenly terrified, whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“Amanda, don't you dare.””
