Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Kept for Six Months

My father had faced hostile investors, multimillion-dollar lawsuits, and business partners who smiled while preparing to destroy him.

I had never seen him look frightened.

Until Dominic showed him that message.

Ask your wife what her father promised Marcus Reed six months ago.

“Dad?”” I repeated.

He took Dominic's phone, read the message again, and handed it back without a word.

“Who sent this?”” he asked.

“An unknown number,” Dominic replied.

“I don't know who it is.””

“Don't respond. Preserve the message.””

My father turned to Danielle Brooks, who had returned from the security office.

“Please contact our legal department. Tell them I need the records from the Marcus Reed negotiations six months ago.””

Danielle's expression shifted.

“The Reed negotiations?””

“Yes.””

She glanced at me, then back at him.

“Understood.””

I caught her hesitation.

“Dad, what negotiations?””

He rubbed his silver beard.

“Not here, sweetheart.””

The familiar answer struck harder than I expected.

Not here.

Not now.

Not yet.

It seemed everyone in my life had decided that the truth was something I could be given only when it became convenient for them.

I stepped away from him.

“No. I'm done with that.””

He looked at me.

“Vivienne—”

“I spent the entire evening being accused of something I didn't do. Now there's a forged signature with my name on it, a suspicious transfer, and a message suggesting you made a promise to your chief financial officer. If this concerns my family, I deserve to know.””

My father's face softened.

“You're right.””

He glanced toward the private suite.

“Let's sit down. I'll tell you what I can establish, and I'll be honest about what I don't yet know.””

We entered a bright sitting room overlooking the hotel courtyard. Warm gold lighting illuminated the cream-colored furniture. A vase of pink roses stood on the coffee table, their petals trembling slightly in the air from the ventilation system.

A security officer remained outside the door.

Dominic followed us, but I stopped him.

“This conversation is about my father and me.””

He nodded miserably and stayed in the corridor.

Inside, my father sat opposite me.

“Six months ago,” he began, “Marcus Reed approached me with concerns about our company's expansion plans. He believed some of our investments were exposing the business to unnecessary risk.””

“That sounds like Marcus,” I said.

“He always preferred caution.””

“He did. But he also believed certain executives were being overlooked. He wanted a larger role in financial planning.””

“Did you promise him one?””

“I told him we'd discuss it after the quarterly review. Nothing more.””

I studied his face.

“Then why would someone send that message?””

“Because someone may be trying to create the impression that Marcus and I made an arrangement we didn't make. Or because there was an arrangement I haven't yet uncovered.””

The admission surprised me.

“You think Marcus could be involved?””

“I think his credentials were used. That's a fact. Who used them remains a question.””

My father leaned forward.

“There is something else you should know. Around that same time, Marcus recommended that we establish a separate investment subsidiary for a hotel development. The proposal was rejected because the financial projections weren't sufficiently supported.””

“Was Eleanor involved?””

“Not that I know of.””

I looked at the floor.

The pieces were beginning to connect, but not in a way that made sense yet.

Eleanor's company had been registered six months earlier.

Marcus had discussed a new subsidiary around the same time.

A suspicious financial guarantee appeared during Chloe's wedding.

And someone had staged a public accusation against me, apparently to delay scrutiny of a transfer.

“Dad, did Marcus know about my pregnancy?””

My father frowned.

“Of course. He sent a gift when you announced it.””

“Did he know I was attending this wedding?””

“Yes. The hotel event schedule was available to several departments.””

I closed my eyes.

That meant the people involved might have known exactly where to find me.

My father reached across the table and covered my hand.

“Listen to me. We don't know whether the financial matter and the accusation were planned by the same person. We won't assume they were. But we will preserve everything and find out.””

I nodded.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Did you ever promise Marcus anything involving me?””

My father went silent.

The clock on the wall ticked twice.

“No,” he said finally.

“Not involving you personally.””

The careful wording unsettled me.

“What does that mean?””

He sighed.

“Marcus once asked whether you would consider joining the company's board after the baby was born. He believed you had a better understanding of our hospitality operations than some of the people currently making decisions.””

I blinked.

“I never heard about that.””

“I declined to discuss it because I didn't want your career to become an extension of mine. I wanted you to choose your own path.””

“That doesn't explain the message.””

“No. It doesn't.””

A knock interrupted us.

Danielle entered with a folder and a tablet.

“We've secured the relevant account records,” she said.

“There's also a preliminary finding regarding the company registered to Eleanor Cole.””

My father gestured for her to continue.

“The company has no documented hotel operations. Its registration lists event consulting and hospitality services, but we haven't found evidence of an operating business matching that description.””

“Who funded it?”” I asked.

“That's still under review. We have identified a deposit that appears to have come from an account associated with Chloe's wedding expenses. The source and purpose of that payment need to be verified.””

My father frowned.

“Any connection to Marcus?””

“Not yet established.””

Danielle tapped the tablet.

“However, the original guarantee submitted in Vivienne's name includes an attachment that appears to have been copied from a legitimate document she signed during a hotel renovation project two years ago.””

I sat upright.

“What renovation project?””

“The renovation of the penthouse suite at our downtown property. You signed a guest-experience approval form after reviewing the design.””

I remembered it immediately.

My father had asked me to review the room because I had experience with luxury hospitality. The document had authorized design choices, not money.

“Someone copied my signature from that form?””

“It appears possible,” Danielle said.

“The handwriting is similar, but our forensic review has not concluded.””

My father stood.

“Preserve both documents. Notify the bank that the guarantee is disputed. No transfer is to proceed without independent verification.””

Danielle nodded.

As she left, my phone vibrated.

A message from Dominic appeared.

Please come outside. I found something else.

I hesitated, then stepped into the corridor.

Dominic stood near the window, holding a folded document. He looked as if he hadn't slept in days.

“What's this?”” I asked.

“Chloe gave me this six months ago. She said it was a business proposal. I found it in my jacket pocket when I was looking for my room key.””

I took the paper.

At the top was the name of Eleanor's company.

Below it were projected event revenues, a proposed financing structure, and a list of intended partners.

One name appeared in bold.

Marcus Reed.

Another appeared beneath it.

Dominic Cole.

I looked at my husband.

“You were part of this company?””

“I never became a director. Chloe asked me to help with the initial paperwork, but I backed out when I realized the numbers didn't make sense.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed. I'd already agreed to help pay for the wedding, and I was afraid you'd think I was irresponsible.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You hid an entire business proposal because you were afraid I'd think you were irresponsible?””

He bowed his head.

“I know how it sounds.””

I examined the document more carefully.

There was a handwritten note in the margin, dated six months earlier.

If Samuel refuses the partnership, use the family connection.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

My father had refused a business proposal.

Someone had then registered a company in Eleanor's name, involved Dominic and Chloe in the paperwork, and attempted to use my identity to support a financial guarantee.

But the most disturbing part was the final page.

It contained a list of names associated with the proposed financing.

At the bottom was a note in Chloe's handwriting.

Vivienne must not see this until the transfer is complete.

I looked up at Dominic.

“Why was my name on a document you said had nothing to do with me?””

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

“I don't know.””

For once, I believed he might be telling the truth.

But I no longer believed that ignorance made him innocent.

I carried the document back into the sitting room.

My father read the note, then stared at the page for a long time.

“Dad,” I whispered, “what were they trying to buy with my name?””

He looked at me.

Before he could answer, Danielle returned.

“We've just received a call from the bank's fraud team,” she said.

“The disputed guarantee wasn't the only document submitted today.””

She placed another page on the table.

“This one requests a much larger transfer.””

My father scanned the amount.

His expression hardened.

The sum was more than enough to change the future of the company.

Danielle pointed to the signature line.

“The authorization appears to have been submitted under Mr. Reed's credentials. But the bank has flagged a second signatory.””

I leaned forward.

The name was clearly printed.

Samuel Cole.

May you like

My father's name.

And beneath it was a signature that looked exactly like his.
