Chapter 4: The Message That Destroyed My Marriage

“Then why did you text Chloe that Vivienne's access card would make the perfect excuse?””

Amanda's question hung above the ballroom like a blade.

Dominic stared at her.

For three seconds, he didn't move. Then he laughed, a short, strained sound that convinced absolutely no one.

“That's not what happened,” he said.

“Amanda is upset. She's trying to drag everyone into this because she got caught.””

Amanda wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“You told me to make sure the card was visible.””

“I never said that!””

“You said Vivienne always carries it because you gave it to her. You said nobody would question why it was near Chloe's things.””

My fingers tightened around the torn fabric of my gown.

The black access card lay on the marble floor beside my scattered belongings. Until that moment, I had assumed it was simply a convenient detail in Chloe's accusation.

Now it looked like something else entirely.

A piece of a plan.

I turned toward my husband.

“Dominic, what is she talking about?””

He looked at my father instead of me.

“Sir, I can explain.””

“Then explain,” my father replied.

Dominic loosened his tie.

“This is a misunderstanding. Amanda and I discussed the hotel access card because I was helping Chloe coordinate the wedding. That's all.””

I took a step toward him.

“Why would you discuss my access card with Amanda?””

“Because you were helping with the event.””

“I wasn't helping with the event. I was a guest.””

He blinked.

For the first time, I saw fear beneath his familiar expression.

“Vivienne, please. You're upset, and this isn't the right place to have this conversation.””

I almost smiled at the irony.

He had considered the ballroom an appropriate place to watch his mother tear my dress. An appropriate place to let his sister empty my purse onto the floor. An appropriate place to allow two hundred people to question my character.

But now that his own name had entered the conversation, privacy suddenly mattered.

My father turned to Renee.

“Can you establish whether any messages were exchanged between these individuals regarding the missing ring or my daughter's access card?””

Renee nodded.

“With the appropriate consent or lawful authorization, security can preserve relevant hotel records and provide any available footage. Personal phone messages would need to be handled through the proper process.””

“Good,” my father said.

“Let's proceed properly.””

Chloe grabbed Dominic's arm.

“Tell them she's lying!””

Dominic pulled away.

“Chloe, stop.””

Her eyes widened.

“What did you just say to me?””

“I said stop!””

The sudden force in his voice made several guests turn.

Chloe stared at him as though he had betrayed her.

Then she did something I would remember long after the wedding was over.

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the ballroom.

Eleanor rushed toward her son.

“Dominic! What is wrong with you?””

“He's letting them destroy me!”” Chloe shouted.

“After everything I've done for him!””

I watched my husband touch his cheek.

For years, I had seen Dominic shrink whenever his mother raised her voice. He had learned to survive by agreeing with whoever was angriest, then privately apologizing to whoever had been hurt.

It was how he handled disagreements about money.

It was how he handled holidays.

It was how he handled every insult Eleanor directed at me.

But tonight, his usual strategy had begun to collapse.

“Chloe,” he said, “you told me you had lost the ring.””

“I did lose it!””

“The footage shows Amanda taking it.””

“Because I trusted her!””

Amanda laughed bitterly through her tears.

“You trusted me to do exactly what you told me.””

Chloe lunged at her.

A security officer stepped between them.

“That's enough,” he said firmly.

Eleanor pointed at Amanda.

“You will not stand here and accuse my children without proof.””

Amanda reached into her purse, then stopped when the officer raised a hand.

“What are you doing?”” Eleanor demanded.

Amanda swallowed.

“I have something.””

Dominic went pale.

I noticed.

So did my father.

“What do you have?”” he asked.

Amanda looked at Dominic.

“An audio message.””

Chloe's expression changed instantly.

“No,” she whispered.

Amanda nodded shakily.

“You sent it to me three days ago, Chloe. You told me to keep it in case Dominic changed his mind.””

“Delete it!”” Chloe screamed.

The officer stepped between them again.

“Ma'am, you need to remain calm.””

Amanda looked toward Renee.

“Can I play it?””

Renee glanced at my father, who nodded.

“Only if you're comfortable sharing it with the appropriate people,” he said.

“We won't interfere with your phone or ask you to surrender it without proper authorization.””

Amanda unlocked her phone and tapped the recording.

Chloe's voice emerged from the small speaker, bright and unmistakable.

“Dominic says Vivienne's card opens the service corridor. If anything goes missing, we can make it look like she had access. Mom will handle the rest. Just don't get nervous.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Dominic.

His eyes were fixed on the floor.

My throat tightened.

“Did you know?”” I asked.

He shook his head too quickly.

“No. I swear, Vivienne. I didn't know she was going to take the ring.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He finally looked at me.

“I knew Chloe was angry with you.””

“Why?””

His silence answered before his mouth did.

Then he whispered, “Because of the money.””

I felt the room recede around me.

“What money?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Chloe stopped struggling against the security officer.

And Dominic, the man I had married, finally admitted what he had spent months hiding.

“The wedding expenses,” he said.

“The hotel deposits. The vendors. I told Chloe I could cover them, but I couldn't.””

I stared at him.

“How much?””

He swallowed.

“Eighty-six thousand dollars.””

A murmur rippled through the ballroom.

I remembered the late-night calls he had taken in the garage. The credit card statements he had claimed were delayed. The sudden insistence that we postpone buying furniture for the baby's nursery.

I had asked him whether everything was all right.

He had kissed my forehead and told me not to worry.

“You spent eighty-six thousand dollars you didn't have on this wedding?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“With what?””

His eyes flicked toward my father.

I understood.

He had expected access to my family's wealth to solve a problem he had created.

My father stepped forward.

“Did you intend to use my daughter's name or property to obtain money?””

“No, sir.””

“Did you expect her to cover your debts?””

Dominic hesitated.

That hesitation was more devastating than any answer.

I removed my wedding ring.

Dominic's eyes dropped to my hand.

“Vivienne, don't.””

I held the ring between my fingers.

“You told me you wanted a family with me.””

“I do.””

“You told me you wanted our child to grow up in a home built on trust.””

“I still do.””

“Then why did you help your sister turn me into a suspect?””

He shook his head, tears gathering in his eyes.

“I didn't think it would go this far.””

I stared at him.

“That is the saddest thing you've said all night.””

I slipped the ring into my purse.

My father placed a steady hand against my back.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to decide everything tonight.””

“I know, Dad.””

But I had already decided one thing.

I would never again confuse a man's fear of conflict with his love for me.

As security escorted Chloe and Amanda toward a private room to make their statements, Chloe twisted around and shouted, “Vivienne! You can't destroy this family over one mistake!””

I looked at her.

“One mistake?””

She stopped.

I touched my belly.

“You tried to destroy my reputation to protect your own lies. And my husband helped you because he was too weak to tell you no.””

Dominic flinched.

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Whatever he read made the last trace of color drain from his face.

My father noticed.

“Something else, Dominic?””

Dominic slowly raised his eyes toward me.

May you like

“Vivienne,” he whispered, “there's something you need to know about the hotel account.””

And suddenly, I wondered whether the stolen diamond had been meant to distract everyone from a much larger crime.
