Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The threat against Patricia changed everything.
Until then, I had thought of the investigation as a battle over money, control, and the truth about Lucas's final days.
Now someone had directly threatened a woman who had worked with my husband.
Jonathan arranged for Patricia to speak with the appropriate authorities and advised her to preserve every message she received. My attorney also made it clear that we would not attempt to conduct our own surveillance or confront anyone suspected of wrongdoing.
Still, I couldn't stop thinking about the sentence in the message.
Before someone else pays for your mistake.
Someone else.
Who?
Me?
Daniel?
Or the little girl I was carrying?
That afternoon, I sat in Jonathan's office while he reviewed the proposed meeting with Vanessa.
"Her lawyer has confirmed she will attend," he said.
"She claims she has documents that will explain the assignment bearing Lucas's signature.""
"Do you believe her?""
"I believe she has something she wants us to see. That is not the same as believing her explanation.""
I glanced at the clock.
Two minutes until the meeting.
My stomach tightened.
Daniel sat beside me, his knee bouncing beneath the table.
"Emily," he said quietly, "you don't have to do this if you're not ready.""
"I've been ready since Richard locked that door.""
He didn't argue.
The conference room door opened.
Vanessa walked in wearing a cream suit and carrying a leather folder.
For the first time since Lucas's death, she looked nothing like the confident woman who had stood behind Richard in the kitchen.
Her makeup was uneven.
Her eyes were red.
She glanced at me, then at my stomach.
"Emily.""
I didn't return the greeting.
"Sit down.""
She flinched.
Then she took the chair opposite me.
Jonathan introduced the attorneys and explained the ground rules. All documents would be reviewed and copied through counsel. No one would make promises about immunity or the outcome of any investigation.
Vanessa nodded without looking at him.
Then she opened her folder.
The first document was the assignment of controlling interest.
The same document we had already examined.
She slid it toward Jonathan.
"This is the original.""
He studied it carefully.
"How did you obtain it?""
"Lucas gave it to me.""
"When?""
"Two days before he died.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because he wanted me to understand what his father was planning.""
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
"You're telling me Lucas gave you a document that could transfer his inheritance to Richard, and you didn't think to tell me?""
"He didn't want you involved.""
"He was my husband!""
"I know.""
"No, Vanessa. You don't know anything about what it was like to watch the man I loved being lowered into the ground while you stood beside his father and helped throw me out of my home.""
Her face crumpled.
For one brief second, I thought she might cry.
Instead, she looked down at the document.
"I deserved that.""
The admission unsettled me more than an excuse would have.
Jonathan interrupted.
"Mrs. Reed, please explain what you believe this document represents.""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Lucas discovered that Richard had been using Northbridge to move money out of Carter Meridian. Some of the transactions were authorized using Lucas's signature. Others used Emily's.""
"We know that," Jonathan said.
"Continue.""
"Richard wanted Lucas to sign a document transferring the shares to him. He told Lucas it was the only way to prevent a public investigation from damaging the family.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"And Lucas agreed?""
"No.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"He refused. They argued for almost an hour.""
"Then why does the document bear his signature?"" I asked.
"Because Richard had another copy prepared.""
Jonathan's expression sharpened.
"Are you saying the signature is forged?""
"I believe so.""
"Why did you previously claim it was genuine?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Because Richard told me to.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
"You lied to me.""
"Yes.""
"You told me Lucas had signed away everything.""
"Yes.""
"You let me believe my husband had betrayed me.""
Vanessa's shoulders shook.
"I was afraid.""
I leaned forward.
"And what about when Richard threw me out? Were you afraid then, too?""
She couldn't meet my eyes.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you stand there and watch?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
"Because I thought if I helped him get rid of you, he would stop suspecting me.""
I stared at her.
"You helped him throw out a pregnant widow to protect yourself?""
"Yes.""
The word landed between us like a stone.
I wanted to slap her.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I looked at Jonathan.
"Please continue.""
He nodded to Vanessa.
"You said Richard suspected you. Why?""
Vanessa opened the second folder.
Inside were bank statements, invoices, and copies of emails.
"My company received payments from Northbridge. Richard told me they were consulting fees. I didn't know the money was connected to false authorizations until Lucas confronted me.""
"How much did your company receive?""
"Approximately six million dollars over several years.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Six million?""
"I didn't keep all of it.""
"Where did the rest go?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Some went to companies Richard controlled. Some went to an account I was instructed to maintain.""
"By whom?""
"Richard.""
Jonathan made a note.
"Did you know that Margaret Carter's name was associated with another company receiving payments?""
Vanessa looked up sharply.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.
"How do you know about Margaret?""
"Answer the question, please.""
She hesitated.
"Yes.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did you know about Lucas's mother?""
Vanessa looked at me for several seconds.
Then she spoke.
"Margaret discovered the transfers before she died. She wanted to report them, but Richard convinced everyone that her illness had affected her judgment.""
I felt cold all over.
"You knew her?""
"No. I was much younger. But I saw the old correspondence.""
"Did Richard cause her death?""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"I have no evidence of that. I won't tell you he did something I cannot prove.""
The answer was the first thing she had said that sounded completely honest.
Jonathan nodded.
"That distinction is important.""
Vanessa removed a small envelope from her folder.
"Lucas gave me this on the night we met at Northbridge.""
My heart began to pound.
"What is it?""
"A copy of the original ledger.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why didn't you give it to Jonathan yesterday?""
"Because I was afraid Richard would find out.""
"You've already admitted that you were protecting yourself," I said.
"Why should we believe you now?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I think Richard is going to do something worse than take the company.""
Jonathan held out his hand.
"Please pass the envelope to me.""
She did.
He examined the seal before opening it.
Inside was a memory card and a handwritten note.
The note was from Lucas.
Vanessa, if you are reading this, then I have failed to protect everyone involved. The files on this card establish the sequence of transfers. Do not give them to Richard. If Emily is ever forced out of the house, deliver them to Jonathan Price.
I stared at the words.
Lucas had anticipated Richard throwing me out.
He had anticipated that Vanessa might be frightened into silence.
He had even anticipated the exact condition that would trigger the delivery.
My husband had tried to protect me while I was still living beside him, unaware of the danger.
Vanessa lowered her head.
"He told me to give you that note if Richard ever tried to remove you from the house. I didn't think he meant it literally.""
"Then why didn't you bring it sooner?"" I asked.
"Because Richard told me he would destroy my life if I betrayed him.""
I looked at her.
"He destroyed mine without hesitation.""
She had no answer.
Jonathan placed the memory card into a protective evidence sleeve.
"We will arrange for the contents to be examined. Mrs. Reed, you will need independent legal advice about your own position.""
"I understand.""
"One more question," I said.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Why did Lucas meet you at Northbridge three days before he died?""
She stared at the table.
Then she answered.
"Because he had discovered that the money wasn't being moved only to hide it.""
"What do you mean?""
"Some of the payments were being used to fund a company that Richard planned to transfer to Grace after her birth.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Why would he do that?""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"Because Richard believed the company would give him a legal claim over the trust's assets through a debt arrangement.""
Jonathan sat very still.
"Are you saying Richard intended to make the trust liable for debts it did not incur?""
"That's what Lucas believed.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Then the plan wasn't just to take control. It was to saddle the trust with debt.""
Vanessa nodded.
I pressed both hands over my stomach.
"What company?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she slid one final page across the table.
At the top was a name I had never seen before.
*Grace Carter Foundation Holdings.*
Below it was a proposed registration date.
The day after my daughter's expected birth.
And beneath that, in Richard's handwriting, were the words:
*Once the child arrives, the mother becomes unnecessary.*
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything.
Then I stood.
My chair scraped across the floor.
Vanessa recoiled.
I leaned over the table, staring at her.
May you like
"Tell me everything," I said.
"And this time, don't leave out a single word.""
