Chapter 12: The Trap Waiting for Grace
Jonathan asked me to sit down.
I couldn't.
The words on the page seemed to burn through my vision.
*Once the child arrives, the mother becomes unnecessary.*
Richard had written them.
Not as a vague suggestion.
Not as a lawyer's careful phrasing.
As a declaration.
My daughter was not yet born, and her grandfather had already reduced me to an obstacle.
Vanessa sat motionless across the table.
"I don't know what he intended that sentence to mean," she whispered.
I turned toward her.
"Then explain why you brought it here.""
"Because Lucas believed Richard was planning to use the company as a way to control the trust.""
Jonathan rose.
"Let's slow down. We need to establish what this document is, who created it, and whether it has any legal effect.""
He took the page from the table and placed it in a folder.
"Mrs. Reed, did you see Richard write these words?""
"No.""
"Did you receive the document directly from him?""
"Yes. He emailed it to me with instructions to arrange the company's registration.""
"Did you do so?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. I delayed it.""
"Why?""
"Because Lucas confronted me about the proposed company. He showed me the financial records and explained that Richard intended to use it to create a debt against the trust.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"How would that work?""
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
"Richard planned to establish a company in Grace's name. The company would supposedly borrow money from another Carter-controlled business. Then it would claim that the trust had guaranteed the debt.""
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"Was there a signed guarantee?""
"Not that I saw.""
"Then we cannot assume one existed.""
"I know," Vanessa said.
"But Richard told me the paperwork would be completed after the birth.""
I looked at Jonathan.
"Could he actually do that?""
"Not lawfully merely because he wanted to. A child's name cannot automatically make her responsible for a company's debts, and a trust cannot be bound by an agreement it has not validly authorized. But a fabricated guarantee or disputed authorization could still create a serious legal and financial problem.""
I sat down slowly.
"So he wanted to create a company in Grace's name, attach a debt to it, and use that dispute to take control of the trust.""
"That appears to have been the proposed scheme," Jonathan replied.
"We need the underlying records before drawing a final conclusion.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why would Richard care so much about controlling the trust?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Because Carter Meridian owns the commercial properties that secure several of his other businesses. He has been using those properties as collateral for loans.""
Jonathan opened his folder.
"That is consistent with some of the records we have reviewed.""
Vanessa continued.
"His companies are carrying substantial debt. If the lenders call those loans in, he could lose control of several businesses.""
Daniel frowned.
"So he wanted access to the trust's assets to protect his own companies.""
"Yes.""
"And the false transactions?""
"He wanted them to look like legitimate transfers. If anyone questioned the money, he could claim Lucas had approved it.""
I stared at the papers.
"And if Lucas refused?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Richard planned to challenge his judgment and portray him as unstable.""
The room fell silent.
I remembered Lucas's letter.
His father's anger is not proof that you have done anything wrong.
He had written those words because he knew how easily Richard could make someone doubt themselves.
But Lucas had never told me how far his father might go to maintain control.
Jonathan opened the folder containing Margaret's letter.
"Mrs. Reed, did you know about Margaret Carter's concerns before Lucas began his investigation?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Richard kept some of her old correspondence. He said it was evidence that she had been confused near the end of her life.""
"Did you read it?""
"Yes.""
"What did you find?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Margaret had been asking questions about the same companies.""
I felt a cold knot form in my stomach.
"The same companies that were receiving money twelve years ago?""
"Yes.""
"Then Richard never stopped.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"No.""
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
Twelve years.
Millions of dollars.
A dead woman whose warnings had been dismissed.
A son who had inherited her suspicions.
A pregnant wife who had been thrown out of her home.
And now a child whose name was being used to build a financial trap.
I covered my face.
I didn't want to cry in front of Vanessa.
I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of seeing what Richard had done to me.
But the tears came anyway.
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Emily.""
I lowered my hands.
"I'm not crying because of the money.""
"I know.""
"I'm crying because Lucas was trying to protect us, and I didn't even know he was afraid.""
Daniel's expression softened.
"He wanted you to have a normal life.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
"Maybe he thought he could solve it before it reached you.""
I looked at the letter in front of me.
That sounded like Lucas.
He had always tried to carry the heaviest burdens himself.
When his work became stressful, he would tell me everything was fine.
When his father criticized him, he would smile and change the subject.
When I asked why he sometimes woke in the middle of the night, he would kiss my forehead and tell me he was thinking about the baby.
Perhaps he had been doing all those things because he wanted to protect the peace we had built.
Perhaps he had been wrong to keep so much from me.
But he had not been wrong to love us.
Jonathan closed his notebook.
"We need to take immediate steps to protect the trust, preserve the evidence, and notify the appropriate authorities about the suspected fraudulent transactions.""
"Can we stop Richard from registering that company?""
"We can seek appropriate legal relief if the circumstances justify it. We will also notify the relevant corporate authorities and request preservation of the records.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"And what happens to her?""
Jonathan answered carefully.
"That depends on the evidence and the decisions of the relevant authorities. Her cooperation may be relevant, but it does not automatically excuse any wrongdoing.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I understand.""
I studied her face.
For months, she had been the woman who smiled while I was being pushed out of the family.
Now she was sitting across from me, admitting that she had helped Richard hide money and had stayed silent while he threatened me.
I couldn't forgive her.
Not today.
Maybe not ever.
But I needed the truth more than I needed revenge.
"Did Lucas know you would come forward?"" I asked.
Vanessa reached into her folder and removed another envelope.
"He gave me this on the night we met at Northbridge.""
She slid it toward me.
It was addressed to me.
My name was written in Lucas's handwriting.
I stared at it for several seconds before opening it.
Inside was a single page.
Emily,
If Vanessa gives you this letter, then she has finally decided to tell the truth. Do not mistake that decision for proof that she is innocent. I believe she has been involved in the transactions, but I also believe she knows more about my mother's death than she has admitted.
My breath caught.
I looked up.
Vanessa had gone completely pale.
"Why did Lucas write that?"" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I continued reading.
There is one person who can explain what happened to my mother's shares. His name is Martin Shaw. He was my grandfather's solicitor, and he handled the original trust documents.
The letter continued.
Martin retired years ago. I found him recently, and he agreed to meet me. He told me that my grandfather left instructions to protect the company if my father ever attempted to seize control.
I read the next paragraph twice.
But Martin also told me something I never knew.
My fingers trembled.
My mother did not die believing that my father would eventually change. She died believing he had already stolen what belonged to her.
I lowered the page.
Vanessa stared at the table.
"Did you know about Martin Shaw?"" I asked.
She nodded slowly.
"Richard mentioned him once. He said Martin had become senile and was trying to reopen old disputes.""
"Did you ever meet him?""
"No.""
I looked at Jonathan.
"Can we find him?""
"Yes. If he is willing to speak with us, we can arrange an interview through the appropriate legal channels.""
I returned to the letter.
The final paragraph was short.
Emily, if Martin is still alive, ask him why my mother changed her will three weeks before she died.
I froze.
"She changed her will?""
Jonathan leaned forward.
"Apparently.""
"Who inherited her shares?""
"We don't know yet.""
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
"There was another document," she whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
"What document?"" Jonathan asked.
She swallowed.
"Richard kept a copy of Margaret's original will in his private study. I saw it once when I was helping organize his papers.""
"What did it say?""
"I couldn't read the entire document. But I saw the name of the beneficiary.""
My heartbeat thundered.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Lucas.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
"Then why would Richard write that Lucas would never know what happened to his mother's shares?""
"Because I think Margaret left him something Richard couldn't control.""
Jonathan immediately began making notes.
"We need to locate Martin Shaw and obtain the probate records. We also need to establish whether the will was changed lawfully and whether any assets were transferred afterward.""
I folded Lucas's letter carefully.
There it was again.
Another secret.
Another piece of evidence pointing toward a truth Richard had spent years trying to suppress.
But before Jonathan could finish his call, the conference room door opened.
His assistant stood in the doorway, holding a printed email.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, Mr. Price. This just came through from the Carter Meridian board.""
Jonathan took the page.
He read it once.
Then again.
His face changed.
"What is it?"" Daniel asked.
Jonathan looked at me.
"Richard has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning. He is requesting that the directors recognize him as temporary controller of Carter Meridian's core assets.""
"Can he do that?""
"He can request it. Whether the board has authority to approve it is another question.""
I stood.
"Then we need to stop him.""
Jonathan nodded.
"We will challenge the request and provide the relevant evidence to the board. But we need to act quickly.""
He looked at the document again.
"There is one additional problem.""
"What?""
"Richard has attached a medical statement alleging that Lucas was suffering from a condition that impaired his judgment before his death.""
My stomach dropped.
"What condition?""
Jonathan turned the page toward me.
The statement claimed that Lucas had been experiencing severe psychological instability.
It suggested that his financial decisions should be reviewed.
And it cited a consultation at a private clinic.
A clinic I recognized.
The same clinic whose name appeared on the document concerning Grace.
I stared at the page.
"They're trying to make Lucas look unstable, too.""
Jonathan nodded.
"That appears to be the purpose of the statement.""
"But Lucas never saw a psychiatrist.""
Vanessa suddenly lifted her head.
"Yes, he did.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She looked terrified.
"Richard arranged the appointment. He told Lucas it was a routine medical consultation required for the company's insurance policy.""
My throat tightened.
"Did Lucas go?""
Vanessa nodded.
"And when he came out, Richard had him sign something.""
"What did he sign?""
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"I don't know. But I remember Richard saying that if Lucas ever tried to challenge him again, he would make sure nobody believed a word his son said.""
I felt the room go cold.
Richard had not only planned to take control of the company.
He had prepared a way to discredit Lucas if he resisted.
And now, with my husband dead and his daughter unborn, he was trying to use that same strategy against us.
Jonathan gathered the documents.
"Tomorrow's meeting is going to be difficult.""
I looked at Lucas's letter.
Then I looked at the medical statement bearing my husband's name.
For twelve years, Richard had apparently relied on one weapon above all others.
Making people doubt the person who challenged him.
He had used it against Margaret.
He had tried to use it against Lucas.
And now he was using it against me.
But this time, he had made one mistake.
May you like
He had left a trail.
And tomorrow morning, I intended to make sure the entire board saw it.
