Chapter 7: The Document That Could Steal My Daughter’s Future

By seven o’clock that evening, I had received eleven calls from Richard Carter, six messages from Vanessa, and one email that made my hands go numb.

The email contained a scanned document bearing my husband's signature.

Its title was simple.

*Assignment of Controlling Interest — Carter Meridian Holdings.*

According to the document, Lucas had agreed to transfer his entire beneficial interest in Carter Meridian to his father for one dollar.

One dollar.

I read the figure three times.

"That's ridiculous," Daniel said, standing behind my chair.

"Lucas would never sell a forty-two-million-dollar interest for one dollar.""

"Maybe he was being pressured," I whispered.

Jonathan Price sat across from us in the conference room at my attorney's office. He had brought the original trust instrument, several financial records, and a folder containing copies of Lucas's correspondence.

He took the printed document from me.

"Let's not jump to conclusions. The first thing we need to establish is whether this document is authentic and whether it could legally accomplish what it claims to accomplish.""

"But it has Lucas's signature.""

"A signature is not the same as a valid transfer.""

He examined the bottom of the page.

"There's no independent witness listed. No reference to the trust's approval procedure. And the document appears to describe the interest as Lucas's personal property, even though it was transferred into the trust three years ago.""

Daniel leaned over the table.

"Could someone have copied his signature?""

"Certainly. But I won't make that accusation without examining the original.""

I stared at the document.

Something about it bothered me.

Not the signature.

The date.

"Jonathan, look at this.""

I pointed to the date printed beneath the title.

October 14.

Lucas had died on October 15.

According to the police report, the accident had occurred shortly before midnight on the fourteenth.

I felt the room tilt.

"This says he signed it the day he died.""

Jonathan nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why would he have gone to Northbridge afterward?""

"We don't know that he did. The photograph establishes that he was there three days before the accident, not on the night itself.""

I pressed my fingers against my temples.

Everything seemed connected, yet nothing was clear enough to trust.

"Could Richard have made the document after Lucas died?""

"Possibly. The date alone cannot tell us when it was created.""

Daniel paced toward the window.

"Vanessa claims she has the original. Why would she have it unless she was involved?""

"She may have been involved," Jonathan replied.

"Or she may have been given it for another reason. We need to establish how she obtained it.""

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Jonathan shook his head.

"Let it go to voicemail.""

But before the call ended, a message appeared.

*I can prove the signature is real. Lucas signed it himself. If you want to know why, meet me tomorrow at the estate.*

A second message followed.

*Bring the trust documents. Richard wants this settled before the board meeting on Friday.*

Daniel read it over my shoulder.

"She's trying to make you hand over the trust.""

I turned toward Jonathan.

"What happens Friday?""

He opened another folder.

"Carter Meridian's board is scheduled to meet to review the company's governance and financial position. Given the concerns Lucas raised before his death, I expect the meeting may become contentious.""

"Can Richard take control of the company at that meeting?""

"Not simply because he wants to. His authority depends on the company's governing documents and the rights attached to the shares. However, he may attempt to persuade the board that the trust's position is disputed.""

"And if he convinces them?""

"He could create serious practical difficulties, even if his legal position ultimately fails.""

I looked again at the document.

One dollar.

A forged signature could cost my daughter a fortune.

A valid signature might mean Lucas had made a decision I knew nothing about.

And somewhere in the middle was Vanessa, insisting that she knew why.

"I want to meet her," I said.

Daniel turned.

"No.""

"I'm not going alone. Jonathan can arrange a safe location. But I need to hear what she knows.""

Jonathan considered this.

"If she is willing to provide evidence, she can meet us at my office with your attorney present. We will not surrender the trust documents, and we will not sign anything.""

I typed a message.

*If you have evidence, bring it to Jonathan Price's office tomorrow at ten. I will be there with my attorney. I will not meet you privately or hand over any documents.*

Vanessa replied almost immediately.

*You don't understand. Richard is watching everything. If I come to that office, I won't leave with my life intact.*

I stared at the message.

Daniel stopped pacing.

"What did she say?""

I showed him.

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"If she genuinely fears for her safety, we should take that seriously. But we cannot verify her claim from a text message.""

I typed again.

*Then contact the police if you believe you're in danger. You can provide your evidence through my attorney.*

No response came.

For twenty minutes, the room remained silent except for the occasional vibration of Daniel's phone.

Then my screen lit up.

A photograph.

It showed a small black USB drive lying beside a handwritten note.

The note was in Lucas's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

*If Richard ever gets this back, Emily loses everything.*

Beneath the photograph, Vanessa had written:

*Your husband gave me this because he knew what his father was capable of. I kept it because I was afraid.*

My breath caught.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.

"The drive Lucas gave me," he said.

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"The one he told me to keep safe. The one in my apartment.""

He pulled out his phone and opened a photograph he had taken weeks earlier.

The drive on the screen looked almost identical.

Same black casing.

Same silver strip.

Same small scratch near the connector.

Daniel's face went pale.

"Emily, I think Lucas made two copies.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Do you still have yours?""

"Yes.""

"Then do not open it, alter it, or send it to anyone. We need to preserve it properly.""

I looked at Vanessa's photograph again.

"Why would she have a copy?""

Jonathan closed the folder.

"That is the question we need her to answer.""

A new message arrived.

This time, it was a voice recording.

I pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room, quiet and trembling.

"Emily, I know you hate me. You have every reason to. But Lucas came to me because he believed Richard was going to destroy the company. I didn't understand how serious it was until I saw what was on that drive.""

She paused.

Then she continued.

"I didn't tell Richard everything. I swear to you. But he knows I have something, and now he's looking for it.""

A noise sounded in the background.

A door opening.

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

"If you want to know why Lucas signed that document, look at the last file on the drive. And Emily?""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Whatever you do, don't let Richard find out that Grace was mentioned in it.""

The recording ended.

I couldn't move.

Grace.

Our daughter.

My unborn child had somehow become part of a secret that had started long before she was born.

I looked at Daniel.

"What's on your drive?""

"I don't know.""

Jonathan stood.

"Then tomorrow morning, we'll arrange a secure forensic examination of the copy you possess. Until then, neither of you should contact Richard or Vanessa directly.""

He gathered the documents.

As he reached the door, he turned back.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand that this may be bigger than an inheritance dispute.""

I looked at the photograph of Lucas's handwriting.

"What do you think it is?""

Jonathan's expression was grave.

"I think your husband was trying to expose something, and someone is desperate to stop him.""

My phone buzzed once more.

A final message from Vanessa.

*I have the original drive. But if you want it, you must understand one thing first. Lucas wasn't trying to save Carter Meridian.*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*He was trying to save Grace.*
