Chapter 5: Vanessa's Secret Envelope

Jonathan placed the envelope on the hospital table.

Nobody touched it.

The room seemed unusually quiet. Even the distant sounds of nurses moving through the corridor felt muted.

I stared at Vanessa's name.

"Did Lucas tell you what was inside?"" I asked.

"No," Jonathan replied.

"He made me promise not to open it unless the conditions specified in his instructions were met.""

"And one of those conditions was Richard throwing me out.""

"Correct.""

Daniel folded his arms.

"Then open it.""

Jonathan shook his head.

"The envelope is addressed to Vanessa. I am not going to read private correspondence aloud without first considering the legal implications. However, Lucas's instructions authorize me to deliver it to her under these circumstances.""

I looked at the words written beneath her name.

You know what you did to Emily.

My stomach tightened.

"What could she have done to me?""

Jonathan didn't speculate.

Instead, he asked, "Have you had any contact with Vanessa before she began spending time with Richard?""

"Not much. She was polite at first. She asked about the baby, brought flowers, and offered to help me prepare the nursery.""

"Did she ever ask you to sign documents?""

I thought about it.

"Once. She said Richard needed updated emergency contact information for the family insurance policy. She brought a stack of papers to the kitchen.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you sign them?""

"No. I told her I wanted to read them first.""

"What happened?""

"She laughed and said I was being paranoid. Then she took the papers away.""

Jonathan made a note.

"Do you remember when this occurred?""

"About two months ago.""

"Did she return with the papers?""

"No.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily, you need to tell Jonathan about everything, even things that seem unimportant.""

I nodded.

Jonathan placed Vanessa's envelope inside his briefcase.

"I will arrange for formal delivery through the appropriate channel. Meanwhile, I recommend that you retain independent counsel and avoid direct discussions about the trust with either Richard or Vanessa.""

"I don't have a lawyer," I said.

"I can provide a list of attorneys who have no connection to the Carter family.""

"Thank you.""

He stood, then hesitated.

"Mrs. Carter, there is something else I think you should understand. Your husband was very specific about the timing of these instructions.""

"Meaning?""

"He did not want you to know about the trust while he was alive unless it became absolutely necessary.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Jonathan's gaze moved toward the window.

"His concern was that knowledge of your financial position could make you a target for pressure. He believed someone might try to obtain your signature on documents that would weaken your rights.""

I thought about the papers Vanessa had brought into the kitchen.

The emergency contact forms.

The way she had laughed when I refused to sign them.

A cold sensation spread across my arms.

"Do you think she was trying to get my signature then?""

"I think it warrants investigation.""

After Jonathan left, Daniel sat beside me while I read Lucas's letter from the beginning.

The first pages were gentle.

He wrote about our wedding, about the little house we had once dreamed of buying near the coast, about the name we had chosen for our daughter.

We had settled on Grace.

Not because it was fashionable, but because Lucas said the world could be cruel and he wanted our daughter to grow up knowing that grace was not weakness.

He had written:

If you're reading this, Emily, then I failed to tell you something important while I still had the chance.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I never wanted you to inherit a war. I wanted you to inherit the freedom to walk away from one.

I pressed the letter against my mouth.

"Oh, Lucas.""

Daniel turned his face toward the window.

I kept reading.

My father believes that everything he builds belongs to him forever. He has spent his life confusing control with love. I tried for years to earn his approval, but eventually I understood that no amount of obedience would ever be enough.

The next paragraph was shorter.

If he treats you as he has sometimes treated me, remember this: his anger is not proof that you have done anything wrong.

Tears slid down my cheeks.

The last section referred to Carter Meridian and the trust.

Lucas explained that the company had been founded by his grandfather, Edward Carter, who believed the family's wealth should not depend entirely on Richard's judgment.

Edward had established a structure that kept the company's core assets separate from the businesses Richard operated.

When Lucas inherited the shares, Richard had attempted to persuade him to transfer them.

Lucas had refused.

According to the letter, their disagreement had grown worse during the previous year.

Then came a sentence that made me stop reading.

If Vanessa is still with my father when you receive this letter, do not trust anything she tells you about the night I died.

I read it again.

Then I handed the page to Daniel.

His face hardened.

"That's why he left her an envelope.""

"What happened that night?""

"I don't know yet.""

I wiped my eyes.

"How can someone be so cruel to the woman who just lost her husband?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

"I'm calling Jonathan. We need to know whether he can deliver that envelope today.""

Before he could dial, my own phone rang.

Richard again.

I answered before Daniel could stop me.

"What do you want?""

Richard's voice was sharp.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"Don't be dramatic, Emily.""

I almost laughed.

"You threw me out of your house while I was pregnant.""

"You were asked to leave.""

"You pushed me.""

"You lost your balance.""

I closed my eyes.

He could deny it so easily.

"Why do you want Lucas's letter?"" I asked.

Silence.

Then Richard said, "Because I know what he wrote.""

My heart hammered.

"How?""

"Lucas was confused near the end. He was making decisions without understanding their consequences.""

"Then why are you afraid of what he said?""

Richard's breathing grew heavier.

"I'm not afraid of anything.""

"Then you won't mind if Jonathan reads the letter.""

"That lawyer has been filling your head with nonsense.""

"He's the one who told me about the trust.""

The silence that followed was different.

It was the silence of a man who had just heard a door lock behind him.

When Richard spoke again, his voice was lower.

"What exactly did he tell you?""

"That Lucas protected me and Grace.""

Richard let out a bitter laugh.

"Your daughter is a child, Emily. She doesn't need a fortune. She needs a stable family.""

"Then why did you throw her mother out onto the street?""

"Because you have no idea what you're involved in.""

"Then explain it.""

He didn't.

Instead, I heard Vanessa speaking in the background.

"Richard, give me the phone.""

He covered the receiver, but I heard her clearly.

"Tell her the documents are invalid.""

Richard returned to the call.

"Come to the house tomorrow. Bring the letter. We can settle this privately.""

"No.""

"Emily, don't make an enemy of me.""

"You did that yourself.""

I ended the call.

My hands were shaking so badly that Daniel took the phone from me.

For a moment, I felt a strange, unfamiliar sensation.

Not happiness.

Not relief.

Something harder.

Resolve.

Richard had spent years believing that fear could make people obedient.

He had mistaken my grief for weakness.

I wasn't ready to fight him for money.

But I was ready to protect my daughter.

And I would never again let him decide what I deserved.

The next morning, Jonathan arranged for a licensed process server to deliver Vanessa's envelope to the Carter residence.

Daniel and I waited in his SUV several streets away, not because we intended to confront anyone, but because Jonathan wanted to know whether Vanessa was still there.

At 10:17 a.m., his phone rang.

He answered on speaker.

"Mr. Price," the process server said, "the recipient has been served.""

"Did she accept the envelope?""

"She refused to sign for it. I documented the refusal and left it according to the delivery instructions.""

"Was anyone else present?""

"Yes. A man I understand to be Richard Carter.""

Jonathan thanked him and ended the call.

I looked at Daniel.

"What happens now?""

"We wait," Jonathan said.

He had joined us in the SUV after arranging a meeting with my new attorney.

"Lucas's instructions provide for several possible responses. If Vanessa attempts to destroy or conceal the letter, we will document that. If she contacts me, I will record the communication in accordance with applicable law.""

"What if she ignores it?""

"Then we proceed with the other parts of the investigation.""

I watched the house through the windshield.

The white curtains in the upstairs bedroom shifted.

A moment later, Vanessa appeared at the front window.

She was holding a sheet of paper.

Even from a distance, I could see that she was trembling.

Then she looked toward the street.

Toward us.

Daniel's phone rang.

The screen showed an unfamiliar number.

Jonathan raised one hand.

"Let it go to voicemail.""

The call ended.

A message appeared.

*Tell Emily I know what Lucas told her. If she wants to know the truth, she needs to come alone.*

I stared at the words.

"She's trying to lure me back.""

"Yes," Jonathan replied.

"Why?""

He looked toward the house.

"Because whatever is in that envelope has frightened her.""

My phone buzzed again.

This time, the message included a photograph.

It showed Lucas standing outside a building, wearing the navy coat I had bought him for his birthday.

Beside him stood Vanessa.

They were facing each other.

Her hand was gripping his sleeve.

The timestamp on the photograph was dated three days before his accident.

Beneath it was a message.

*Your husband wasn't the man you thought he was. Ask him why he met me that night.*

My blood ran cold.

Daniel leaned over to see the photograph.

His face changed.

"That's the Northbridge building," he whispered.

Jonathan took the phone from my hand.

May you like

He studied the photograph for several seconds, then looked at me.

"Mrs. Carter, I believe we have just discovered why Lucas's instructions were so urgent.""
