The harder question was Emma.
Claire was her biological mother.
Also one of the adults who harmed her.
Those truths did not cancel each other.
Family court became involved.
Child specialists.
Supervised contact.
Therapy.
Claire asked me once:
“Do you think I love her?”
I answered:
“Yes.”
She seemed surprised.
“Then why are you keeping her from me?”
“I’m not making this decision alone.”
“You know what I mean.”
I did.
“You can love someone and still be unsafe for them.”
Claire cried.
That sentence hurt both of us.
She had to earn contact slowly.
Not with money.
Not with promises.
With behavior.
Showing up.
Taking responsibility.
Not blaming Patricia.
Not blaming Ryan.
Not blaming my travel.
Eventually, she said something important during therapy.
