Chapter 8 - PATRICIA FINALLY ADMITTED SHE STARTED THE PUNISHMENTSPatricia resisted accountability longer than anyone.
She insisted she was “teaching manners.”
Then video after video removed every excuse.
Finally, during a recorded interview with attorneys present, she admitted the truth.
The punishment had been her idea.
“Claire was too soft.”
I stared.
“You call putting a toddler under a table strength?”
“She needed consequences.”
“For witnessing an affair?”
“For repeating things she didn’t understand.”
I almost laughed.
“That is called telling the truth.”
Patricia looked away.
Then she said:
“I thought if she associated talking about it with losing privileges, she’d stop.”
Privileges.
Food.
A chair.
Being allowed to sit with family.
Those were privileges to her.
I asked:
“Why the dog tray?”
She looked ashamed.
“I was angry.”
“At a three-year-old?”
“She said she would tell you.”
“And?”
“I knew Claire would lose everything.”
There it was.
She loved her daughter.
So much that she decided my daughter could be humiliated to protect her.
Family loyalty twisted into cruelty.
Patricia whispered:
“I didn’t think it would affect Emma long-term.”
I answered:
“You didn’t think because she wasn’t the child you were protecting.”
She started crying.
