Chapter 4 - WHY CLAIRE CHOSE RYANClaire admitted the affair lasted eleven months.
Not one mistake.
Not one drunken night.
Eleven months.
It began during another business trip.
Of course.
Ryan came to the house to discuss company issues.
Emma was asleep.
Claire was lonely.
He stayed.
The cliché would have been almost funny if my daughter had not been punished to hide it.
I asked:
“Did you love him?”
Claire shook her head.
Ryan looked hurt.
Interesting.
“Then why?”
She cried.
“You were never here.”
“I traveled.”
“You lived at work.”
“That’s not the same.”
“It felt the same.”
I wanted to defend myself.
Then stopped.
I did travel too much.
That explained marital distance.
It did not excuse betrayal.
Both could be true.
Claire continued.
“Ryan listened.”
“Then why the documents?”
Her face changed.
The affair had become financial when Ryan told Claire I planned to divorce her.
A lie.
He said my father’s trust would leave her with almost nothing.
Partly true under our prenup.
Ryan told her:
“If Daniel leaves, you’ll be the woman who gave him a child and walks away with a settlement while Emma inherits everything.”
Claire panicked.
Then Patricia joined.
My mother-in-law had always been obsessed with security.
She told Claire:
“Never depend on a husband’s generosity.”
Good advice.
Until they interpreted it as permission to steal.
Ryan proposed restructuring.
Claire could control a household trust.
Ryan could reclaim company shares.
Everybody “protected.”
Except me.
Except Emma.
I asked:
“When did starving our daughter become part of protection?”
Claire broke.
She covered her face.
“She kept talking.”
“About what she saw?”
“Yes.”
“And that frightened you.”
“Yes.”
“So you frightened her more.”
Claire cried.
“I thought she’d forget.”
She was three.
That sentence became one of the ugliest things anyone said during the entire case.
