Not exculpatory.

She had spent her life comparing herself to me.

Dad trusted me with operations.

Mom trusted me with finances.

Lauren got money.

But not authority.

She experienced that as being loved less.

“I was always the decorative child.”

I stared.

“You had a career.”

“One no one respected.”

“That doesn’t give you the trust.”

“I know.”

She cried.

That was new.

“I know now.”

Lauren wanted one moment where the family needed her.

Gerald offered exactly that.
