Chapter 5 - MY FATHER’S LAST LETTER WAS MOSTLY ABOUT ME

Dad’s letter continued.
Not just warning about Evelyn.
He wrote:
Daniel, if you are reading this after something happens to Lily, do not make your guilt her next burden.
I stopped.
Then:
You travel because you work. That is not abuse. But you have made Vanessa the interpreter of everything at home because it is efficient. Efficiency is not parenting.
Brutal.
Then:
Call teachers yourself. Ask Lily questions yourself. Listen to staff without routing them back through Vanessa or your mother.
I had failed.
Then:
And if Evelyn is wrong, do not make Lily comfort you about your mother.
Exactly.
I was already close.
Lily saw me cry one night.
She said:
“Don’t be sad, Daddy. Grandma maybe didn’t mean it.”
Six.
Protecting me.
I stopped.
“You don’t need to make me feel better.”
Then:
“Grandma made choices. Adults handle that.”
Good.
Then Dad:
Your mother loves you. She also believes love gives her authority. Those are not the same thing.
That line stayed.
Then:
Do not confuse family loyalty with access.
Boundaries.
Then final:
Lily should grow up knowing money is something she has, not something she is.
Perfect.
Then I closed.
Samantha said:
“He was worried you’d make this a war.”
He knew.
I wanted war.
Instead, law.
Therapy.
Governance.
May you like
Boring.
Better.
