Chapter 6 - EVELYN FINALLY ADMITTED WHY SHE RESENTED EMMA

During plea negotiations, Mother agreed to mediated family statement.
She talked about Emma.
My late wife.
Mother never liked her.
Emma’s parents were wealthier in liquid assets than ours at marriage.
Emma insisted prenup.
Independent trust for Lily.
Mother interpreted as accusation:
Carters cannot be trusted.
Then Emma died.
Trust remained outside family.
Mother felt insulted from grave.
She said:
“Every time I saw Samantha deny reimbursement, I heard Emma saying no.”
There.
Then Dad sided with Samantha.
Then I did sometimes.
Mother felt authority shrinking.
Then Vanessa arrived.
Young.
Insecure.
Easy to influence.
Mother elevated her.
Not because Vanessa better.
Because Vanessa needed Mother.
Emma had not.
Then:
“Lily looked like Emma.”
Of course.
Mother admitted:
“I resented that.”
I stared.
“She was four.”
“I know.”
Then:
“Six.”
“Yes.”
Then garden.
Mother said she did not expect fall; she expected Vanessa to make Lily sit near pit. But footage showed she helped keep her there after fall.
So whatever original plan, she continued.
She said:
“I wanted her to stop screaming and obey.”
Then:
“And I wanted guests to see she was difficult.”
There.
Then money.
She believed care company legitimate despite conflict.
But handwritten:
Once the child is removed, no one can challenge us.
What did that mean?
She answered:
“Samantha kept saying Lily’s interests came first. If Vanessa became guardian, we would have family authority.”
Us.
Control.
Then judge eventually accepted plea? Let's make Mother fought some charges but convicted/pleaded to financial exploitation/conspiracy and child endangerment.
Due age and no prior record, meaningful but not cartoon: custodial period/home confinement/probation, restitution, permanent removal from fiduciary roles, protective order.
Vanessa more direct child abuse and fraud; similar meaningful consequences.
Victor Sloan disbarred, financial penalties/prison depending charge.
Then Mother wrote Lily apology.
I made you believe love in this family had an order.
Then:
It does not.
Then:
I am sorry I held your hand when you were trying to climb out.
Specific.
May you like
Lily did not read until older.
Good.
