Chapter 8 - THE MONEY CAME BACK SLOWLY

Financial recovery took years.

Not one courtroom order.

Property sold.

Insurance.

Restitution.

Professional-liability settlements.

Of roughly $3.8 million disputed, around $2.9 million ultimately restored directly or through settlements.

Some legitimate costs remained.

Some unrecoverable.

Trust still grew through investments.

By Lily eighteen, around $14.6 million.

She did not get briefcase.

She got education.

Samantha taught.

Independent co-trustee.

Budgeting.

Tax.

Conflict.

Then Lily said:

“Grandma did all that for fees smaller than what trust grew?”

Samantha:

“People rarely destroy families with spreadsheets because math is rational.”

Good.

Then:

“They want control.”

Yes.

Then Lily chose to keep professional trustee even when she could take more authority.

“Because Dad still signs things too fast.”

I deserved.

Then career.

She became veterinarian? Let's pick civil engineer.

No family business.

No estate obsession.

Then I eventually remarried when Lily was seventeen.

To Rachel? My sister Rachel exists. Need different. Claire Bennett.

Claire never touched trust.

Never asked to be Mom.

Lily called Claire.

Then one day Claire told her:

“I don’t need a title to care about you.”

That would have saved Vanessa years.

Then marriage quiet.

No family hierarchy.
