“Why now?” Charles’s lawyer asked.
Victoria looked toward Sam.
“Because silence is how we got here.”
That sentence mattered.
She produced family emails.
One from Charles:
Emma is young. Time will solve the attachment problem.
Another:
The boy should grow up Bennett, not Blake.
Then one after five-year-old Sam began asking questions:
He is becoming emotionally difficult. Placement may be necessary until he understands discipline.
Sam read that later.
He looked at me.
“I was difficult because I wanted you.”
My heart broke.
“Yes.”
He whispered:

“That’s messed up.”
