Chapter 13 - THE FIRST TIME HE CALLED ME MOMIt happened accidentally.

Sixteen months after I found him.
Sam was living with us full-time by then under a reunification order.
Not adopted.
Not renamed.
Not reinvented.
Just home.
One morning, Lily stole his last waffle.
He chased her through the kitchen.
She screamed.
I shouted:
“Both of you, stop!”
Sam turned.
“Mom, tell her—”
Silence.
All three of us froze.
Sam’s face went red.
“I mean Emma.”
My heart almost stopped.
I forced myself to remain normal.
“You called me Mom.”
“I didn’t.”
“You definitely did,” Lily said.
“Shut up.”
“Samuel.”
“Sorry.”
I wanted to hug him.
Cry.
Celebrate.
Instead, I pointed to Lily.
“She owes you a waffle.”
He looked grateful.
Not because of the waffle.
Because I did not turn his accidental word into a debt.
Later that night, he stood at my door.
“Emma?”
“Yes?”
Then:
“Mom?”
I looked up.
He swallowed.
“Can I call you that sometimes?”
My eyes filled.
“You can call me whatever feels right.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Then left.
I cried after he closed the door.
May you like
Privately.
Some moments belong to the child more than the parent.
