Chapter 9 - THE SCHOOL BULLIES LEARNED WHO SAM WASHawthorne Academy investigated the bullying.

At first, some parents tried to minimize it.

“Kids being kids.”

Then the video surfaced.

Food thrown.

Slurs.

A vulnerable child surrounded.

The school suspended three students and required restorative disciplinary processes.

I did not ask them to reveal Sam’s identity.

In fact, I insisted they didn’t.

He did not need respect because he was secretly a Bennett heir.

That would be the wrong lesson.

Then one parent found out anyway.

Within days, whispers spread.

“That homeless boy is a Bennett.”

Suddenly adults became interested.

Invitations appeared.

Apologies became enthusiastic.

Sam noticed immediately.

He looked at me.

“They’re nicer because I’m rich?”

“Some are.”

“That’s disgusting.”

“Yes.”

“Can I still hate Hawthorne?”

“Absolutely.”

He chose not to attend there.

Charles later offered to pay full tuition.

Sam laughed when told.

“No.”

Good.

He enrolled in a smaller public magnet school months later.

His decision.

Not mine.

Not Charles’s.

Not a trust’s.
