Chapter 7 - CHARLES BENNETT WANTED THE BOY BACKThe moment Charles learned Sam had been found, he filed for custody.

I almost laughed when my attorney told me.
“He stopped looking for four years.”
“He claims he was misinformed about Sam’s whereabouts.”
“By who?”
“Employees.”
Convenient.
Charles’s lawyers argued that I had voluntarily relinquished parental rights.
That Sam’s long-standing Bennett connection gave Charles familial standing.
That returning him to “stability” was in his best interest.
Stability.
The word wealthy people use when they want control to sound therapeutic.
Then Charles’s team produced my old signed papers.
I panicked.
My attorney didn’t.
Because the papers were a mess.
Conflicting dates.
Missing required disclosures.
No independent counsel for me.
Several signatures notarized by an employee of Bennett Development.
Worst of all?
One document listed an adoption that never occurred.
Another listed temporary guardianship.
Charles had created contradictory paperwork because he needed different stories for different audiences.
