Chapter 3: The Document That Exposed My Bride
Daniel placed the document on the table.
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Dad, give me that!””
He stepped backward.
“No.””
“It's none of his business!””
I looked at her.
“After everything you've said tonight, I think it became my business a long time ago.””
Daniel unfolded the paper.
It was a legal notice from a law firm.
My mother's full name appeared near the top.
Underneath it was a reference to the Richard Whitmore Family Trust.
I read the first paragraph twice.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
He took a breath.
“Three months ago, the trust administrators discovered new evidence regarding Richard's intended beneficiary. They contacted Eleanor.””
My mother stared at the floor.
Daniel continued.
“After reviewing the original documents, they confirmed that Eleanor's son was the rightful beneficiary.””
My heart began pounding.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father left you a substantial inheritance.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel gave me the amount.
I barely processed it.
It was more money than I had ever imagined seeing in my lifetime.
I turned toward my mother.
“Mom, you knew?””
She nodded.
“They contacted me a few months ago. I asked them to handle everything quietly.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't want money to change your life. I wanted you to build your own future.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And Vanessa?””
He sighed.
“She found out.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's not how it happened.””
Daniel placed another sheet of paper beside the first.
“This is an email you sent to my office.””
I looked down.
The subject line read:
Regarding Eleanor's inheritance.
The message was short.
Vanessa had asked whether the trust could be challenged on the grounds that my mother had failed to disclose certain family information before the marriage.
I read it again.
Then again.
“Why would you do that?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“I'm listening.””
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“By challenging my mother's inheritance?””
“You don't understand how complicated money makes things.””
I stared at her.
“You told me you loved my mother.””
“I do.””
“No, you don't.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Vanessa, tell him about the photograph.””
She looked at him with hatred.
“Stop.””
“Tell him why you asked the photographer to take the family picture before Eleanor could join it.””
My stomach tightened.
I remembered the photographer standing near the flowers.
I remembered Vanessa whispering something to him before the ceremony.
I had assumed she was asking about the schedule.
Now I turned toward the photographer.
“Did she tell you something?””
The man looked uncomfortable.
“I didn't want to get involved.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Don't say anything.””
He swallowed.
“She asked me to take a separate photograph of the Whitmore family before the reception. She said there was a family issue and that Eleanor shouldn't be included.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You planned this?””
She shook her head rapidly.
“No. It wasn't like that.””
The photographer continued.
“She also asked whether I could remove someone from the background if they accidentally appeared in any photographs.””
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
I felt sick.
My mother had been treated like an unwanted stranger in a room full of people who were supposed to become her family.
And it hadn't been an impulsive insult.
It had been planned.
Daniel picked up the legal notice.
“There's more.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Dad, please.””
He placed another page beside it.
“This is a draft agreement Vanessa prepared with her attorney. It would have required Marcus to transfer control of certain inherited assets into a marital holding company after the wedding.””
I stared at the page.
My name appeared beneath a signature line.
But I hadn't signed anything.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“She intended to have you sign it after the honeymoon.””
Vanessa stepped toward me.
“It was just paperwork. I wanted us to manage everything together.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you would have misunderstood.””
“Why did you need my mother's inheritance in a company controlled by you?””
She looked toward her father.
Daniel spoke before she could answer.
“Because she had already promised financial backing to a property development company. She needed access to your assets to secure the deal.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She began crying harder.
“It was an opportunity. I was trying to build something for us.””
“With money that wasn't yours?””
“With our money!””
“My mother hadn't even told me about it!””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“You were going to inherit it anyway!””
I stepped backward.
There it was.
Not love.
Not partnership.
A calculation.
She had looked at my mother and seen a problem standing between her and money.
My mother reached for my hand.
“Marcus, let's go.””
But Daniel wasn't finished.
“Wait.””
He removed one final photograph from the envelope.
It showed my mother and Richard standing in front of a small house. Richard's arm was around her shoulders. Both were laughing.
On the back was a handwritten message.
To Eleanor and our little boy. Everything I have is for you both. If anything happens to me, make sure he knows he was loved.
My mother pressed the photograph against her chest.
“I kept that because I wanted you to know your father was real,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
For the first time that evening, I understood something.
She hadn't hidden my father because she was ashamed.
She had protected the memory of him because she didn't want me to grow up believing I had been unwanted.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus, please. We can fix this.””
I looked at the torn lace on her dress.
At the guests who had witnessed everything.
At my mother, who had spent her entire life making room for me.
And at the woman who had tried to erase her from a photograph.
“No,” I said.
“We can't.””
She grabbed my sleeve.
“Don't throw away our future over one mistake.””
“One mistake?””
I gently removed her hand.
“You insulted the woman who raised me. You planned to exclude her. You tried to interfere with her inheritance. And you prepared documents to gain access to money you knew nothing about earning.””
“I love you!””
I looked directly into her eyes.
“Then why was the first thing you did at our wedding to make my mother disappear?””
She had no answer.
I turned toward the guests.
“The wedding is over. Anyone who wants to stay for dinner can stay. But I will not be marrying Vanessa.””
A few people lowered their heads.
Others began whispering.
My mother squeezed my hand.
“Come home with me, sweetheart.””
I nodded.
As we walked toward the ballroom doors, Daniel called after us.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
He held the old photograph of Richard.
“There is something else in the trust records. Something Eleanor doesn't know yet.””
My mother stopped walking.
Daniel looked down at the document.
“Richard didn't leave everything to you immediately. He appointed someone to protect your inheritance until you became an adult.””
“Who?””
Daniel lifted his eyes.
And his next words made my mother grab my arm.
“Your father appointed Vanessa's mother as the trustee. And according to the original agreement, she left behind a letter that was supposed to be opened on your wedding day.””
Vanessa stopped crying.
May you like
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely terrified.
Because apparently, the secret my bride had tried to bury wasn't finished with us yet.
