Chapter 8: The Night My Father Died
My mother didn't move.
She stared at Daniel's phone as though the words had appeared in a language she had forgotten how to read.
“Mom?”” I said.
She tightened her grip on her handbag.
“Not tonight, Marcus.””
I stepped closer.
“You know something.””
Her eyes filled.
“Please. I can't do this here.””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“Eleanor, Margaret wanted him to know.””
My mother shook her head.
“Margaret didn't know everything.””
“Then tell us what she didn't know.””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the frightened young woman from the photographs rather than the mother who had raised me.
“I was twenty-four when Richard died,” she began.
“I was working at the hospital. Your father had been discharged earlier that week after another episode with his heart.””
She paused.
“He wasn't supposed to be alone.””
I sat down.
“What happened?””
“He called me that evening. He said he wanted to see me. He had something important to discuss.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Was that the night of the accident?””
My mother nodded.
“It was raining. I remember because the roads were flooded near the old bridge.””
I felt a chill.
“What accident?””
She looked at me.
“Richard was driving to meet me when his car went off the road.””
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“I was told he had suffered a medical episode.””
“He had.””
My mother swallowed.
“But there was something else.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small plastic sleeve.
Inside was a faded photograph of a newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DIES IN SINGLE-CAR CRASH*
I looked at the date.
It was the date of my father's death.
My mother placed the clipping on the table.
“After the funeral, the police told me they believed his car had been forced off the road. They found damage near the rear bumper.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why have I never heard this?””
“Because the investigation was closed.””
“Who closed it?””
My mother hesitated.
“Your father-in-law.””
Daniel's face changed.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your grandfather told me the family didn't want another scandal. He said Richard's death was tragic enough without accusations.””
Daniel stood abruptly.
“My father would never cover up a murder.””
“I never said it was murder.””
“But you believe someone caused the accident?””
My mother looked down.
“I don't know what happened. I only know Richard was frightened before he died.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Why?””
She opened the plastic sleeve.
There was another piece of paper inside.
A handwritten note.
The ink had faded, but the words remained readable.
Eleanor, if anything happens to me, don't trust the people who say they are protecting you. The papers are not where they should be.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get this?””
“He gave it to me two days before he died.””
Daniel slowly sat down.
“What papers?””
My mother shook her head.
“I never found them.””
Jonathan, who had remained unusually quiet, finally spoke.
“Mrs. Eleanor, do you remember whether Richard mentioned a safe deposit box?””
She nodded.
“He once told me he had something important stored away. But he never gave me the key.””
Jonathan opened his briefcase.
“Margaret's final instructions mention a key.””
He removed a small document.
“After her death, I received a sealed list of personal belongings that were to be transferred to the family trust. One item was described as a silver key with the initials R.W.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Jonathan looked uncomfortable.
“It was delivered to the Whitmore residence.””
Vanessa, who had been sitting silently near the door, suddenly stood.
“I know where it is.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“What?””
“Grandma's jewelry box. The key was inside.””
Jonathan frowned.
“Why didn't you mention that earlier?””
“Because I didn't think it mattered.””
Daniel looked at her.
“When did you see it?””
“Last year.””
“Did you take it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
My stomach tightened.
“Where is it now?””
She looked toward her handbag.
“I still have it.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
“I wanted to know what it opened.””
Jonathan extended his hand.
“May I see it?””
Vanessa reluctantly opened her bag.
She removed a small velvet pouch and placed it on the table.
Jonathan opened it.
Inside was a silver key with the initials R.W.
He examined it carefully.
“This may be the key Margaret referred to.””
My mother looked at it.
Then she began crying.
“Richard told me he had something for our son. He said one day Marcus would understand.””
I reached for her hand.
“Mom, why didn't you tell me any of this?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at the key.
“Your father's family had powerful friends. After he died, someone called me and told me to stop asking questions. They said I should be grateful I had been allowed to keep you.””
Daniel's face went red.
“Who called you?””
“I never knew.””
“Did you recognize the voice?””
She shook her head.
“Not then.””
I looked at the newspaper clipping again.
“Mom, are you saying someone threatened you?””
She nodded.
“I received another call the following week. The man said Richard had left things behind that didn't belong to me.””
Daniel gripped the table.
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“I was young. I had a baby coming. I was terrified.””
Jonathan picked up the key.
“There's a bank listed in Margaret's records. It may still have the original box, provided it was transferred into the trust.””
He examined the small number engraved near the handle.
“Box 417.””
Daniel immediately recognized the bank.
“That's the old Whitmore family bank.””
Vanessa looked at the key.
Then at her father.
“Dad, I think you should stop.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because I already know what was inside that box.””
My mother gripped my hand.
“What?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“A document that proves Richard was planning to leave the family before he died.””
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Because my mother showed it to me when I was sixteen.””
May you like
She paused.
“And she told me that if Marcus ever found out about it, the entire Whitmore family would lose everything.””
