Chapter 7: The Price of My Bride's Betrayal
Daniel Whitmore read the highlighted paragraph twice.
Then he slowly lowered the document.
“Jonathan, what exactly does this mean?””
Jonathan folded his hands.
“It means Richard anticipated the possibility that someone might attempt to manipulate his son's inheritance. He instructed the trustees to investigate any suspected fraud immediately. If wrongdoing is established, the beneficiary's assets remain protected, and anyone involved in the attempted transfer can be held personally accountable.””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“Did you forge Marcus's signature?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Dad, you're misunderstanding.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I said it was a draft!””
Jonathan opened his briefcase again.
“Then perhaps you can explain this.””
He removed a printed bank statement.
At the top was the name of Whitmore Legacy Holdings.
Below it were several transfers.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Where did you get those?””
“Your daughter's company submitted them as supporting documents,” Jonathan explained.
“They were attached to the proposed investment agreement.””
Daniel studied the figures.
His expression changed.
“Vanessa, why is there a payment of eighty-five thousand dollars to a private lender?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“And another forty-two thousand to a company I've never heard of?””
“Dad, please.””
“Where did this money come from?””
She began crying.
“I was going to explain everything.””
Daniel slammed the paper against the table.
“When?””
“After the wedding.””
I stared at her.
“So you were going to marry me, get access to my inheritance, and then explain that your company was in debt?””
Vanessa looked at me desperately.
“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””
“Then how was it supposed to happen?””
She lowered her head.
“I thought once we were married, you would understand that we needed to make financial decisions together.””
I let out a humorless laugh.
“You mean decisions you had already made without me?””
Daniel stood.
“How much do you owe?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“It's not that simple.””
“How much?””
She whispered a number.
Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.
“Almost four hundred thousand dollars?””
Vanessa nodded.
He gripped the back of his chair.
“Where did it go?””
“The property deal.””
“What property deal?””
“The commercial building downtown. I put money into the renovation, but the other investors withdrew.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me the project was fully funded.””
“It was supposed to be.””
“And you told me you had no personal debt.””
“I didn't want you worrying.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You didn't want me asking questions.””
Jonathan quietly gathered the documents.
“Mr. Whitmore, I recommend that you avoid making any financial commitments until an independent review is completed.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you telling me my daughter has been using my money?””
Jonathan didn't answer immediately.
“Some of the transactions appear to involve accounts connected to your business. I cannot determine the full extent without reviewing the records.””
Vanessa turned toward her father.
“Dad, you know I wouldn't steal from you.””
He looked at her for a long time.
“Then why did you lie?””
She had no answer.
My mother finally spoke.
“Vanessa, why didn't you ask for help?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Don't pretend you care.””
“I do care.””
“You've always had everything handed to you!””
My mother looked confused.
“I worked every day to raise Marcus.””
“And now you're getting millions!””
The words came out so quickly that even Vanessa seemed surprised.
There it was.
The real wound.
Not embarrassment.
Not the wedding photographs.
Envy.
She looked at my mother as though the inheritance were something Eleanor had stolen from her personally.
My mother slowly stood.
“I never wanted your money, Vanessa.””
“Of course you didn't. You already have Marcus!””
I stepped between them.
“That's enough.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You don't understand what it's like growing up in my family.””
“Then explain it without blaming my mother.””
She shook her head.
“You'll never understand.””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“Vanessa, I need you to answer one question.””
“What?””
“Did you know about the inheritance before you started dating Marcus?””
The silence was immediate.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Dad, that's unfair.””
“Answer me.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“I knew his family had money.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I knew about Richard's estate.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
She swallowed.
“Mom told me.””
The room seemed to lose all its air.
“You knew who I was before we met?””
Vanessa nodded faintly.
Daniel sat down.
“Margaret told you about Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“And you recognized him when you met him?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I stepped away from the table.
For three years, I had believed our relationship began at a charity fundraiser where Vanessa accidentally spilled coffee on my jacket.
I remembered her laughing.
I remembered her apologizing.
I remembered thinking she was different from the wealthy people who usually surrounded me at those events.
Now I wondered whether the entire evening had been arranged.
“Was the coffee an accident?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Was it?””
She whispered, “No.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel covered his mouth.
Jonathan quietly stopped typing.
Vanessa began speaking faster.
“I didn't know I would fall in love with you. I really didn't. I thought I would just introduce myself, maybe become friends. But then we started spending time together.””
“You approached me because of the inheritance.””
“At first.””
The admission hurt more than I expected.
“And afterward?””
She looked at me.
“I loved you.””
I wanted to believe her.
That was the humiliating part.
Even after everything, a small part of me wanted to find some explanation that would make the last three years real.
But then I remembered my mother's trembling hands.
I remembered the photograph.
I remembered Vanessa calling her an embarrassment.
“Love doesn't look like what you did tonight,” I said.
I picked up my mother's handbag.
“Come on, Mom.””
Daniel called after us.
“Marcus, please. There is something else you should see before you leave.””
I turned.
He held up his phone.
On the screen was an old message from Margaret.
It had been sent to him shortly before her death.
Daniel read the final line aloud.
If Vanessa ever finds Marcus, make sure you discover why she is so desperate to become part of Eleanor's family. It may have nothing to do with Richard's money.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“I don't know. But Margaret mentioned another person in her final instructions.””
“Who?””
He showed me the message.
There was one name beneath it.
My father's name.
Richard Whitmore.
And beside it, Margaret had written:
May you like
Ask Eleanor what happened the night Richard died.
My mother went completely pale.
