Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
Jonathan adjusted his glasses.
The room was so quiet I could hear the air-conditioning humming above us.
He placed the printed email beside Margaret's sealed envelope.
“Vanessa contacted my office eighteen days ago,” he began.
“She claimed that Marcus had agreed to transfer certain rights associated with Richard's trust.””
I frowned.
“I never spoke to you.””
“I know. That's why I didn't process the request.””
Vanessa quickly interrupted.
“It was just an inquiry.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“You submitted a signed document.””
“I was asking whether it was possible.””
“You represented that Marcus had authorized it.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What signed document?””
Jonathan removed another sheet.
At the bottom was my name.
Marcus Whitmore.
The signature looked almost exactly like mine.
But I hadn't signed it.
I leaned closer.
“That isn't my signature.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Marcus, please don't make this into something it isn't.””
I looked at her.
“Someone copied my signature.””
“It was a draft!””
“Then why did it have my name on it?””
She pressed her lips together.
Jonathan spoke calmly.
“The document requested that a portion of the trust be transferred into a private investment company. Vanessa was listed as the proposed managing director.””
I looked at the company name.
It was unfamiliar.
“What company?””
Jonathan read it.
“Whitmore Legacy Holdings.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I've heard that name.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Dad, don't.””
Daniel ignored her.
“It's the company she wanted me to invest in last year.””
Jonathan nodded.
“According to the documents I reviewed, the company was seeking financial backing for a commercial property project.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Were you planning to use my inheritance to fund your business?””
“Our business,” she said.
“We weren't even married yet.””
“We were getting married!””
“That's not the same thing as having my permission.””
She started crying again.
“I thought you trusted me.””
I stared at her.
“I did.””
That was the worst part.
I had trusted her with my finances, my future, my family, and eventually my life.
I had never imagined she would use that trust to take something that belonged to my father.
Jonathan closed the folder.
“I also want to make one thing clear. The trust cannot be transferred simply because someone submits a signed request. There are safeguards. Your father's original instructions require independent approval.””
I looked at my mother.
“Did you know any of this?””
She shook her head.
“No, sweetheart.””
Vanessa suddenly pointed toward her.
“Don't pretend you didn't know what you were doing!””
My mother looked startled.
“What?””
“You knew about the money. You knew my father-in-law had left you nothing. You knew I was going to marry Marcus, and you waited until the wedding to create this disaster!””
I stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“Your mother has been manipulating you since you were born!””
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
I had heard enough.
“You owe her an apology.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Are you still asking me to apologize?””
“Yes.””
“For what? For wanting a better life?””
“For treating my mother like she was beneath you.””
She looked at Jonathan.
“Tell them the truth.””
Jonathan frowned.
“What truth?””
Vanessa stepped closer to the table.
“My mother never wanted Eleanor to have everything.””
Daniel looked confused.
“That's not true.””
“Yes, it is! She told me herself that Eleanor had no right to control the Whitmore family fortune.””
My mother shook her head.
“Margaret never said that.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You weren't there when she was dying!””
My mother went quiet.
Jonathan slowly opened the second envelope.
“Perhaps we should let Margaret speak for herself.””
He removed a handwritten letter.
There was also a small USB drive.
He read the first lines.
To my beloved daughter, Vanessa.
Vanessa's expression changed.
Jonathan continued.
I have loved you since the moment you were born. Nothing that happens in your life will change that.
But loving you does not mean protecting you from the consequences of your choices.
Vanessa lowered herself into the chair.
Jonathan read on.
I know about your interest in Richard's inheritance. I know you have asked about Marcus. I also know that you have repeatedly told people that Eleanor took something that belonged to our family.
She did not.
Eleanor gave me something I could never repay. When Richard died, she could have turned against me. She could have demanded money, property, and recognition.
Instead, she brought me my son. She let me hold him. She allowed me to love the child Richard had left behind.
My mother covered her mouth.
Jonathan paused.
I looked at her.
She was crying silently.
The attorney continued.
Eleanor never tried to replace me. She never asked Marcus to call me his mother. She only asked that I remember he was loved.
Vanessa stared at the table.
Jonathan turned the page.
If you ever become close to Marcus, I hope you do so because you love him. Not because of his inheritance.
And if you cannot respect the woman who raised him, then you are not ready to become part of his family.
He stopped reading.
No one spoke.
Then Jonathan placed the letter down.
“There is a video message on this drive. Margaret requested that it be shown to Marcus and Vanessa together.””
Vanessa stood immediately.
“No.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“The instructions are clear.””
“I don't want to watch it.””
“You may leave if you wish.””
She stared at the USB drive.
Then she looked at me.
“Marcus, please. We don't need to do this.””
I didn't answer.
Jonathan connected the drive to his laptop.
A moment later, Margaret appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in a hospital room, wearing a pale cardigan. Her hair was thinner than in the photographs, and her face looked tired.
But her eyes were clear.
She smiled gently.
“Hello, Marcus. And hello, Vanessa.””
My mother began crying again.
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“Marcus, if you're watching this, it means you finally know who your father was. I wish I could have told you myself.””
She paused.
“There's something important I need you to understand. Your inheritance is not the greatest thing Richard left you.””
I leaned forward.
“It's the people who loved you when you had nothing.””
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Eleanor was one of those people. She gave up so much to raise you. Please never allow anyone to make you ashamed of her.””
Then Margaret turned toward the camera.
Her expression became serious.
“Vanessa, sweetheart, I need you to listen carefully.””
Vanessa's hands began trembling.
“Your father and I have discussed this many times. We know about the company you've been building. We know about the debts. And we know about the agreement you tried to arrange using Marcus's name.””
Daniel slowly turned toward his daughter.
“What debts?””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Margaret continued.
“I know you believe you can solve everything with money. But money will not save you from the truth.””
Then she said something that made Daniel stand abruptly.
“Vanessa, if you are watching this on Marcus's wedding day, I assume you have already discovered that the Whitmore trust contains a condition you were never told about.””
Jonathan froze.
He looked at the document in his briefcase.
Daniel turned toward him.
“What condition?””
Jonathan slowly removed another page.
“I was instructed not to disclose this until the video had been played.””
He looked at me.
“Marcus, your father included a final protection clause in the trust.””
I stared at him.
“What does it say?””
Jonathan swallowed.
“It states that if anyone attempts to obtain control of your inheritance through deception, forgery, or coercion, the entire trust must undergo an immediate independent review.””
Vanessa's face went white.
Jonathan continued.
“And there's a provision concerning the person responsible.””
He turned the page toward me.
The final paragraph was highlighted.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because according to the document, Vanessa wasn't just at risk of losing access to my inheritance.
She might already have lost something far more important.
May you like
Her father's financial support.
And the next person who was about to discover the truth was Daniel Whitmore himself.
