Chapter 10 - I HAD TO ADMIT I MISSED THINGS TOOI wanted to blame Serena.

Marcus.

Hospital systems.

Everyone.

Then Paige’s therapist asked me:

“Were there earlier signs?”

Yes.

Serena sometimes answered for Mom.

“Evelyn’s tired.”

“Evelyn gets confused.”

“She probably forgot.”

I laughed it off.

Mom once told me:

“Your wife treats me like I’m ninety.”

I said:

“She’s trying to help.”

I minimized.

Because confrontation with a spouse is uncomfortable.

Because Mom could be sharp and suspicious.

Because Serena often seemed caring.

None of that made me responsible for her dosing Mom.

But I had missed patterns.

That was mine to own.

I told Mom later:

“I should have listened more carefully.”

She answered:

“Yes.”

Classic Mom.

No false absolution.

Then:

May you like

“But I didn’t know either.”

Both true.
