Chapter 4 - PAIGE TOLD ME IT WASN’T THE FIRST THREATThat night, I sat beside Paige in the hospital family room.

She held hot chocolate.

Didn’t drink it.

Her arm had been photographed.

No serious injury.

Still documented.

I asked:

“Has Serena ever threatened you before?”

Paige looked down.

My stomach dropped.

“How many times?”

She shrugged.

“Not like today.”

That was not an answer.

I waited.

Then she said:

“She told me not to tell you about Grandma being sleepy.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

I froze.

“You saw Grandma yesterday too?”

“Yes.”

I thought Paige had been at her friend’s house after school.

She had stopped by with Serena.

“What happened?”

“Grandma kept falling asleep.”

“And Serena?”

“She said Grandma was tired.”

“What else?”

Paige stared at the cup.

“She told me grown-up medical stuff wasn’t my business.”

That alone wasn’t a threat.

Then:

“And if I made you worried, you might send me back to Mom.”

My ex-wife, Lauren.

Paige lived mostly with me by her own preference and custody arrangement.

Serena knew Paige hated being used in parental conflict.

She had weaponized that.

My chest tightened.

“She told you I would send you away?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe her?”

A little nod.

That broke something in me.

I had spent years making sure Paige understood neither parent would ever make love conditional.

Serena undermined that in one sentence.

I held her hand.

“Listen to me.”

She looked up.

“No adult gets to tell you that telling me the truth will make me stop wanting you here.”

She started crying.

“What if you get mad?”

“I might get mad about what happened.”

“Not at you.”

“Never for telling me someone scared you.”

She leaned into me.

I held her.

Then she whispered:

“I thought Serena liked me.”

I had no answer that could make it simple.

“She may care about you.”

Paige looked confused.

“Then why?”

“Because caring about someone doesn’t stop a person from making harmful choices.”

That was important.

No cartoon monsters.

Serena had helped Paige with homework.

Made birthday cakes.

Stayed up during stomach flu.

Those moments were real.

So was the threat.

People can hold contradictory truths.

Children deserve help understanding that without being forced to forgive.
