Chapter 7 - MARCUS SAID HE NEVER WANTED TO HURT MOMMarcus finally spoke.

Through lawyers.

Then in a family meeting with investigators present.

“I didn’t want her harmed.”

I stared.

“You took sedating medication from a vulnerable resident’s disposal stream.”

“Yes.”

“Gave it to Serena.”

“Yes.”

“Knowing she would give it to Mom.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t want harm.”

“I thought it would make her rest.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You wanted her impaired enough to become easier to control.”

He cried.

“I was desperate.”

There it was.

His development deals were collapsing.

He had personally guaranteed $24 million.

If the sale did not close, lenders could seize most of his equity.

He thought Mom was being stubborn.

He thought I was self-righteous.

He thought one transaction would fix everything.

Then:

“I was going to buy the assets back into the family later.”

Temporary.

Always.

The story people tell themselves right before crossing a line.
