Chapter 10: The Prescription in My Wife's Name

I stared at Vanessa.

She stood beside the fireplace, one hand gripping the edge of the mantel, the other pressed against her mouth.

For the first time, I wasn't looking at my wife.

I was looking at someone who might have helped destroy the two people I loved most.

"Marcus," she whispered.

I held up the prescription bottle.

"Explain why this was filled under your name.""

She shook her head.

"I didn't know.""

"That's becoming your favorite answer.""

"I'm telling you the truth.""

"Then tell me why your name is on a prescription for medication Lily never took.""

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Maya was still there, clutching her rabbit.

I lowered my voice.

"Go upstairs, sweetheart. Lock your bedroom door. Don't open it for anyone except me or the police.""

Maya nodded.

"Are you angry with Vanessa?""

I swallowed.

"I'm angry about what happened. None of this is your fault.""

She slowly disappeared upstairs.

When I heard her bedroom door close, I turned back.

"Start talking.""

Vanessa sank onto the sofa.

"Your father came to me three days before Lily died. He said he needed help delivering some medication.""

"Why you?""

"Because he didn't want Lily to know it came from him.""

"That makes no sense.""

"He told me Lily was refusing treatment. He said the medication would help her sleep and control her pain.""

I stared at her.

"Did you read the label?""

"No.""

"Did you ask a pharmacist?""

"No.""

"Did you call Lily's doctor?""

She shook her head.

I laughed bitterly.

"So you delivered an unidentified bottle of pills to a seriously ill woman because my father asked you to?""

"I trusted him!""

"Why?""

"Because he was your father!""

The words echoed through the room.

Vanessa began crying.

"I thought I was helping. I swear, Marcus. I didn't know what was inside.""

I stepped away from her.

"Who else knew?""

She hesitated.

"Edward.""

My jaw tightened.

"How?""

"He arranged the prescription.""

I stared at her.

"Why would Edward arrange medication for Lily?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because Lily had discovered something.""

"What?""

"She found financial records showing that Edward had been stealing from your father. She was going to give them to the authorities.""

I thought about the USB drive.

The missing video.

The hidden ledger.

Everything was connected.

"Did the pills stop her from reporting him?""

Vanessa looked down.

"She became confused. She slept most of the day. Sometimes she couldn't remember conversations.""

I felt sick.

"Did she tell you?""

"Yes.""

"What did you do?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"I told her she was exhausted.""

I stared at her.

"You dismissed her concerns?""

"I thought she was getting worse because of her illness.""

"She was telling you something was wrong.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I know.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, a police officer was speaking to Thomas.

I needed answers.

Not another emotional explanation.

Rebecca arrived forty minutes later with a medical investigator.

She took the prescription bottle without opening it and placed it inside a sealed evidence container.

"Nobody touches this again," she said.

The investigator examined the label.

"Do you have the original pharmacy information?""

Vanessa nodded.

"There's a receipt in my email.""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Can you obtain it?""

I handed her my phone.

"Use whatever you need.""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she gave Rebecca the pharmacy name.

The investigator made a call.

A few minutes later, he returned with a serious expression.

"The prescription was issued by a doctor who has been under investigation for fraudulent prescriptions.""

"Who?"" I asked.

He showed me a photograph.

Dr. Martin Cole.

I recognized him immediately.

He had treated my father during his final months.

And he had also signed Lily's discharge papers.

Rebecca looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know this doctor?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Edward introduced us.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How many times?""

"Twice.""

"Did you meet him alone?""

She didn't answer.

Rebecca closed her notebook.

"That's enough for now.""

The investigator took the bottle and left.

Then Rebecca turned toward me.

"Marcus, we need to establish whether Lily and your father received the same substance. If they did, that could be significant. But we cannot assume poisoning until the laboratory results come back.""

I nodded.

"How long?""

"Possibly several days.""

Several days.

I looked at the staircase.

Maya had already lost her mother.

I wasn't going to let anyone take away her sense of safety again.

At nine that evening, Vanessa asked to speak with me privately.

I stood in the kitchen while she remained near the doorway.

"Marcus, I know you don't believe me.""

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

She nodded.

"I deserve that.""

"Why did you marry me?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I loved you.""

"Did you?""

"Yes.""

"Or did you want access to Lily's trust?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not why.""

"Then when did things change?""

She looked toward the living room.

"When Edward started contacting me again.""

"Again?""

"He had been helping your father for years. After Lily died, he told me there were documents that needed to be secured.""

"Which documents?""

"The company records. The trust paperwork. The original estate documents.""

"And you agreed?""

"I thought it would protect Tyler and Sophie.""

I stared at her.

"Why would protecting your children require taking money from mine?""

She began crying.

"Edward told me the money would eventually belong to the whole family.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I wanted to.""

I turned away.

Then Vanessa said something that made me stop.

"Marcus, there's something else about Lily's final night.""

I looked back.

"What?""

"She called me.""

"When?""

"About two hours before she was taken to the hospital.""

My chest tightened.

"What did she say?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"She told me she had found the original ledger.""

I stepped closer.

"Where?""

"She said it was hidden inside the blue room.""

I remembered Maya's words.

The blue door behind the old bookshelf.

"What happened after that?""

"She asked me to come over. She said Edward had discovered where it was.""

"Did you go?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"And?""

"I arrived after the ambulance.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because Edward was already there.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"What did he say?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"He told me Lily had taken too much medication. Then he gave me the bottle and told me to throw it away.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Did you?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at her in disbelief.

"Then why do you still have this bottle?""

"Because Lily gave it to me earlier. Edward gave me another one that night.""

I stepped backward.

"Where is the second bottle?""

Vanessa began shaking.

"I don't know.""

"Think.""

"I put it in the kitchen trash.""

"Which kitchen?""

She closed her eyes.

"At Lily's parents' house.""

I grabbed my keys.

Then Vanessa caught my sleeve.

"Marcus, there's one more thing.""

I turned.

She whispered:

"Edward wasn't alone when he came that night.""

"Who was with him?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Your father.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. My father died weeks later.""

She nodded.

"That's why Lily was terrified.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Thomas appeared.

*We recovered the original pharmacy records. The doctor issued prescriptions for both Robert Carter and Lily Carter under the same authorization number.*

A second message followed.

*There's a third prescription. It was issued to someone who is still alive.*

I called him immediately.

"Who?""

Thomas paused.

Then answered.

"Vanessa Carter.""

I looked at my wife.

She was already crying.

May you like

And for the first time, she whispered something I hadn't expected.

"Marcus, I think Edward has been poisoning me too.""
